* Update @ 2009-12-15 19:12 - The rolling restart is complete.
* Update @ 2009-12-15 17:16 - The remaining sims are about to be rolled.
* Update @ 2009-12-15 12:32 - The remaining sims are on hold until after 5:00pm.
* Update @ 2009-12-15 05:33 - The rolling restart is ~50% done

Hi all,

Due to a content-threatening bug, we're going to be doing a full grid deploy tomorrow. My goal is to hit the majority before noon. Whatever remains will be continued after 5pm.

Since it's going to be a very quick deploy, there won't be any distinction between the even & odd sims. They're all going!

* 2009-12-15 @ 5:30am until 12:00pm - Start 100% sim roll
* 2009-12-15 @ 5:00pm until complete - Finish 100% sim roll

The release notes have been updated, though they're intentionally vague due to the security concern: https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Release_Notes/Second_Life_Beta_Server/1.34

Lastly, to lighten spirits during crunch time, I present this deploy's theme song! Behold:

Renamed "freeze" to "crash". That's what I get for not copy & pasting :) As for the song, give it a chance. It's awesome!

"content threatening bug"
12-14-2009 21:07
Can you please elaborate, as per the usual "rolls" there is not an explanation, or what the "bug" is.

This is a repeated pattern in your policy - rolling restart/BUG/oops we need to a new roll and a cryptic blog - and we have a right to know what the issues are, since we're paying for it.

its big enough of a "bug" to cause an implementation of a grid wide roll - this is not minor.

This is certainly not minor! There is a security bug that threatens content theft and it needs to be patched immediately. The specifics of said bug are not disclosed as a matter of policy.

And what if anything is threatened? Can you elaborate in any way - anything rezzed? created since the implementation of the last restarts? Will all content created need to be redone?

I would like to know if I need to redo things -

Thanks for the info. But it's horrible. After every rolling restart the grid suffers instability and lag is bad. Every week now we have rolling restarts. Only 2 of 7 days are workable nowadays.

Probably 5:30 am PST or SLT. The only other time that makes sense would be GMT and that would make the deploy about an hour into it.

Yep! It's starting early because we're doing all the sims in 1 day.

I'm not sure I follow what you mean when you say "will content need to be redone." I also can't elaborate any further on the nature of the security issue.

I would prefer more time between rolls, myself :-) It's a matter of balancing the needs of feature/security deployment with resident impact. It is obviously not desirable to restart regions frequently, but in the case of this security issue, there isn't much choice. Hopefully we can get the restarts to about a 6-week cycle, with anything more frequent being the exception.

Just a general question, so that we may at least know the nature of the beast, but - is this security bug a long-standing one? Or one that the last server update spawned?

Well if this is going to fix the one issue that a few friends have had in the last few days where somebody actually msged them and said watch your inventory and while they were logged in the person started deleting stuff and telling them what they have good

If it fixes something else good

Just get it done

Is it me or are teleports and region crossings completely broken today? Is this a result of the update?

Teleport statistics have looked good up to now. When the roll gets into full swing in a few minutes, it will drop.

actually the big issue this past week have been day after day of chatlag in all the large groups. Were used to a bit of lag, not that we should be, but the past week plus its been daily and across groups, but because most people expect some, i doubt if many or any have reported it as being suddenly terrible now.

...are you guys accidentally looking at teleport stats from the beta grid?

I've been having 50% failed teleports ON A GOOD DAY for ages now!

In decreasing order of effectiveness:

1. Get rid of any Mono scripts you're wearing.
2. Reduce the total number of scripts you're wearing.
3. Reduce the total number of prims you're wearing.

Also, I've found that Snowglobe is much more reliable a teleporter than anything based on the mainstream client.

Maybe it's what you're wearing. I haven't had a failed teleport in months. Check if your hair has resize scripts in ever prim. That'll usually kill TPs faster than anything else.

Out of curiosity, do you have any research to back that up? Almost every script I wear is mono, and I don't have failed TPs. Maybe it's just that I have less scripts than normal.

SVC-3895 would be the place to look. That and Babbage Linden's office hour transcripts..
