You're comparing the blog to Usenet? I take that personally!

Maybe that's my problem. I haven't really involved myself in any other forums and so don't have all that forum sophistication and savvy that others do. I'm not sure that's a bad thing, although it certainly can be, if it disrupts my rl day, thinking about it.

Yep it could be your problem. I'm not sure of your situation so I couldn't say if it is or not. There are obviously many forums around the internet. I'm sure you've noticed. I don't personally understand how people can't disconnect when they walk away but apparently some are connected all day long. Maybe thats why some people take things so personally or tend to attack others also. Maybe sometimes people just need a break from talking to people they don't really know lol. Or maybe people just sometimes need a dose of reality to put some perspective on whats really important. I don't find the shape or size of a person that important to me to start slinging mud around a forum. But I'm sure there are subjects I would be very passionate about.

Oh sure. I"m internet savvy, just not forum savvy. I don't role play so I'm the same inworld and out, it's just me. I'm sure my problem is that I get to thinking of people I don't even know, as you say, as 'friends'. I don't mud sling and rarely get into the heated debate threads. "Care less' is probably the answer, and I don't know if I am even able to do that.

OP, can you rename this thread, "When alts attack" ? That would up the irony level slightly.

I have no problem with alts only when their purpose appears to be for griefing.

Texan you have been here for one or two days and are awfully judgmental of the regulars in that short amount of time. How can you even know what the people are like, who you are judging, or what their posting habits are? Or why they post more some times than others, etc.? You make value judgments like "clucking hen" and things like that. You are missing the bigger picture, the context, that might come if you had been here a while.

You questioned why "someone" thought you were the OP who took a public jab at me but you were talking the same way they were, they said "busybody" you said "clucking hen." I'm a person not a sheet of typeface on a message board, and I have feelings.

I've spent months on here, off and on, because it used to be enjoyable, and it used to be a pleasant place to waste some time here and there. I also like to help people. But lately it's been people just getting personal (like 'clucking hen') the second I disagree with them on a topic. It's been people saying I am lying if I gave them money or helped them, when I was not. It's been people calling me "paranoid" or "have to have the last word" which are really clever attacks in that the second someone tries to defend themself it seems to "prove" the accusation. And it's been someone even beginning a thread solely to attack myself and another forum regular.

And you wonder why some of us are defensive??

And for the final time I was JOKING when I called you Hallie. Yet you are still talking about that in multiple threads. Take your own advice, stop trying to take other people's inventory and let it GO.

This will be my last post in these forums. The things listed above are the reasons. I have not always been an angel I admit but it's been under attack/duress if so and I ALWAYS apologised if I overstepped civil debate. I cannot say the same of others towards myself.

In the end, it is a forum on the internet and NOT worth the real life stress this has caused me. Which, no matter what someone says, it is not pleasant, and after a while becomes stressful, to be singled out, even in this type of venue.

So congratulations "Inbred Texan" you were just the straw that broke the camel's back, I'm sure you did not see it that way but maybe that's why people are not supposed to enter a forum and come in swinging.

Heya sweets...Let's take a deep breath... gotta let some of this slide, as you said, this person is either new to the forums or going by Eli's observation that a funny name is a good sign of an alt, hmmmm... in any case, try not to take it personal. None of us here are saints neither.

In a comunity which fights aggressively for the right to anonymity and the ability to "be who you want to be", I'm not sure why Alt is used so pejoratively.

The alts aren't the problem; it's how they're being used here that is the problem. It is an extension of the logical straw man fallacy, unique to the online world. The use of anonymous alts to bolster one's argument is despicable and tantamount to admitting that one can't win the argument at hand on its own merits. One uses alts in this manner in order to draw the focus away from oneself and quietly sneak out the back door under cover of the dust rising from the inevitable melee that results.

Oh, man! And when were you not an angel? I must have blinked.

You really have been dumped on lately. I'm sorry it's been so hard for you.

/me sends you a big hug (for what it's worth)

I hope a break will renew your spirits.

...except that the Usenet is actually useful (at least once you've learned how to drill down its convoluted heirarchy) and uncensored.... and is only as good or crappy as the NNTP client you're using! ;)

i think if we could all just debate the issues and not make personal swipes it might work a bit better. for the most part i try to do that and for the most part, i stay out of the muck.

in the couple of years i have been participating in these forums, ive noticed that the more involved someone is with the drama here, the more it truly does tend to be related to their own actions. that is a blanket statement of what ive seen over quite a long time. ive also seen people who were the biggest drama queens here at the time realize that their own responses had an effect, so they changed their responses and i barely see them in a scuffle anymore.

as ive said many times here, if we all keep it positive then it will be...even debates can be civil.

Bri, each person can choose for themselves how to feel about stuff that happens. [I have always embraced this thought as a "Truth" BTW, Pep :p ] My best advice is to eat some chocolate, smell the flowers, read a book or shop.. worst case here is we all stop posting and fighting because this "Venue" will no longer exist in the near future. It's a small forum but a very large Grid.

You're confusing Usenet with the Internet. The Internet was started as the ARPAnet around 1970, and ran over dedicated lines between research institutions, funded by the US government. Usenet was started in 1981, and ran over intermittent dialup connections, and was funded by system admins hiding the phone bills in other people's budgets. :D

After all isn't that how parliaments work? I watched Barack Obama give his health care speech earlier and I'm guessing there are a lot of opponents possibly with vested interests and possibly with an organised opposing position who he has to deal with.

I'm not sure we'd have a lot of respect for him if he just stood at the podium, screamed "ALTS" and walked off!

Why do you assume we have respect for him in the first place? He is my employee, I am the one due respect from him.
