Other countries tend to do it more quietly and introspectively: in the US it's a public sport.

Yeah. The forum wasn't always like this, though. I'm not sure what changed it.

I wonder if some of the flaming isn't clandestine Lindens. If they can make these forums look chaotic enough, it builds support for their upcoming change to a sterile, unusable blog format that severely limits the give and take that make a true forum and a community.

Divide and conquer.

I agree. I think there is some definite paranoia at times in forums, and people throwing terms around. I've seen the reference to alts being used towards me just for posting my opinion the other day. Apparently because I had an opinion opposed to someone they assumed I was the alt of someone else.

I think the main thing to take into consideration is that people come and go in a forum regularly. There will inevitably be new people who choose to post. Seems to me in a forum community when new people arrive its like some of the old members jockey for position. It seems some may be insecure perhaps? I don't know how to explain really how I view it. I guess it seems like the old members feel they need to adjust their position or make their presence or "authority" known because they've been here longer.

I don't know if that makes sense but thats what I sometimes see. From my personal perspective anyway. My whole view of the dynamics of how a new member is treated is based on my own personal experience after decided to start posting in these forums just recently. I'm sure there are a lot of nice people in these forums willing to discuss things and listen to other opinions. I happen to know there are others who will just plain jump and use the alt term, and seem to attack in a manner that seems to be a passive agressive way of starting an argument. To me its quite petty, and is pretty transparent but overall this is a forum. It happens I suppose.

I don't personally mind it. I've been in enough forums to know that once a person shows their character they generally don't ever change it. I continue to write my opinions in the same manner I always do. I like to share my opinion on topics whether they aren't shared by others or not. I believe thats what a forum is for.

Maybe that's my problem. I haven't really involved myself in any other forums and so don't have all that forum sophistication and savvy that others do. I'm not sure that's a bad thing, although it certainly can be, if it disrupts my rl day, thinking about it.

Let's think about it.. does lorena really make up words and then use them inappropriately (thus exhibiting what I'm sure you'd like to call a "senseless nihilism";) or did her finger simply slip.

My complaints are less about literary competence than the insult to readers which sloppiness/laziness of presentation implies, as exemplified in your post.
Which bit of 'sloppiness/laziness' didn't you understand?

Pep (That it is obviously a typo reinforces my complaint. :p )

/me waves @ Pocket since I havent seen her around in or out of world in ages! Sorry about all the mud and ick on the floors, Pocket- just avoid it as best you can - good to see you.

/me waves right back at ya Amaranthim... I've only managed a few minutes in-world at any one time.

Anyway, I consider myself a somewhat intelligent human being and I can't make head nor tail of the new forum/blog setup...but I'm sure it'll come to me in time..I still prefer the old one, even with all the bickering and flinging of 'smelly stuff'.. :p

When was the last time Linden Lab appeared to be concerned about building support for anything they did?

Understood ;) Everyone might want to Test Drive the new format or at least read the Flog Area Xstreet Marketplace posts to see what is coming soon to this forum.

OP, can you rename this thread, "When alts attack" ? That would up the irony level slightly.

It jerry springer here... People seem to think its ok to single others out becasue they dont fit thier closed minded ideas of normal.

Guess what?
Theres lots of ABNORMAL people in the world.

Your demands for tolerance of your Second Lifestyle would probably be taken more seriously if you showed the same courtesy to others.

Hard to think of that as a forum, ya know?

I was in the dentists with my daughter yesterday and this guy walks in wearing a tshirt... had a picture of a roll of toilet paper and says "That's how I roll." funny funny.

I realize I'm not contributing greatly to the content here, but just the other day I was in a joke shop with my sister and they were selling a fake roll of toilet paper that you can't rip a sheet off.

Maybe it could be a metaphor for certain threads? I guess that is a stretch, even for me.
