It's not in my best interest to point this out because as I make a HUD that's particularly useful on cross-sim excursions, but I suspect that a vehicle's sim-crossing difficulty is highly correlated with the number and complexity of attachments worn by passengers. I haven't done a systematic test of this, but subjectively it sure seems like my probability of success is inversely proportional to how much junk I'm carrying with me across the border. And it kind of makes sense, inasmuch as the crossed-to sim has to assume all the tasks (prims and scripts) in the vehicle and on its passengers at time of handoff. Right?

Very right. This is something Simon Linden's been working on for a while now. When you cross to a new sim, the old sim has to serialize pretty much everything and ship it over to the new sim, when then deserializes it all. This is a pretty expensive process and why sim fps drops for a few seconds when new avatars TP in. IIRC, there's some small improvements in the upcoming 1.25 sim release and some more substantial ones in something not-too-long after that.

That would be the Second Life Railroad. Four different lines built, two of 'em ready to go into service today. The only two that really have major problems on 'em still are Tuliptree-Jubata (which really is an isolated tail of the Torva-Clearwing Union line, doesn't have railroad crossings built) and the Vicinia Quay-Crumbi Union station. The VQ-CU line has only one station on it right now in VQ, the Bhaga-Clearwing Union line is going to get a new platform at Crumbi Station, yet to be built right at the track split in Crumbi...

You *so* need to be on the Second Life Railroad thread with this information:

I'd guess so. That's the train in Tussock, where the SLRR meets the unpaved Route 3 curve and appears to stop. There's a C&O car, but B&O was also part of the Chessy System.

(Hehe... had to Google to figure out that "MOW" is Maintenance-of-Way. So that offers hope that someday the Tussock spur will continue north, as God intended. ;) )

I spent some time with a Mole last night, talking about that very line. You see, I decided to follow every rail line and all the possible rail ROW last night for some reason. Someting about being cooped up at camp for a week ignites a big wanderlust f'r me.

Anyway, if the Tussock spur were continued, it would take it 'round Campion Mountain and along some very steep land for several regions. Would be beautiful, seeing that many meters of causeway, but what a feat. I suspect it would depend on resources and need, of course. There is already another rail line through the Campion area, so presumably, one might run in one direction while the other goes opposite. Hard to know.

The whole trackway from Crumbi through Tussock does not have a guide rail as it is, and would need to be either finished or retracked. As such, I'd s'pect this would be the last place we'd see rail (not counting any new lines on other continents, etc., or the rebuilding of the much damaged Dore to Luna line). Would sure be nice, though.
