Are there any roads that you can rez vehicles, motorcycles, or bicycles so that you can ride on them in SL? Are there fees involved? And are there sims that you can rez and drive on roads for free?

There are many rez areas along the main roads, and all those rez areas and roads are without fee.

Lots of them! There are Linden highways all over the mainland. Most of them have 'Rez Zones' placed conveniently near sim crossings. I was bored yesterday and rode my motorcycle for hours. For free :)

Borrowed form another thread, here's a map of two of the continents, showing the roads. These are not the only continents with maps nowadays, however:

I was on my motocycle the other day too. Just cruising along until I hit a sim that was at it's limit... the bike poofed and I went flying. I hate it when that happens.

Thanks, and I will. But I was just trying to do a grand tour around Sansara.

Any non-jerky vehicles out there?
01-02-2009 06:22
I have a few bikes and cars
problem is, they all drive very jerkily, not smooth - so you miss bends, hit walls, drown in bottomless seas etc.

I have a powerful machine and a cable broadband (10mb) so bandwidth should not be a problem, but obviously it is.

Any settings or any vehicles with better scripts that don't cost the earth (>800$L) that might help?

Basically -the experience is so crap -I don't want to waste money until effectiveness is proven .

 The Earth now costs $3US? The recession is worse than I thought!

Archie..there are some very nice vehicles out there, with scripts tuned about as good as they can be. But, it's a funny thing, the people that do that quality work seem to like to get paid for it.

Most of the jerkiness that you see comes from using the freely available vehicle scripts without tweaking them. So acceleration or turning or such isn't adjusted to match what you might expect from that vehicle.

Some of the jerkiness is from sim lag and such. Most of the lag problems come at sim crossings.

I'm not an expert on vehicle scripts by any means, but I did manage to make a hot air balloon that is pretty smooth, and a joy to fly around in. And the sailboat I got as a present for Christmas is pure heaven to use. But it did cost a little over 3 earths. :)

Ranunculus, at the northern tip of Heterocera, has a custom-built section of LDPW Route 2 running through the middle of it. The region is like a small town with side streets, a gas station and a drive-in restaurant that features carhops on roller skates. 95% of the region is rezzable area so you can try out all your vehicles. There is also Crazy Bubba's used cars where you can pick up some nice free ones.

Odds are this isn't the vehicle, it's your viewer. Turn down your draw distance, increase your bandwidth limit in your preferences, maybe see if turning off some features helps your framerate.

Your connection is only as good as the slowest link between you and the sim you're on.

The Nissan Altima is free and has very high quality scripting.
Nissan (the RL car company) own some sims in SL and give their SL products out free.
The sims also have some roads to drive on.

You can rez vehicles in Suisun (the Sansara continent) at:

Nissan really needs to come out with some vehicles only available in SL to meet the specific needs of avatars. In SL, I can't even fit into an Altima if it doesn't have a sunroof, and then I can rest my chin on the top of the windshield. Unfortunately, I can't get a RAM van or a Sprinter or something that can more easily accomodate my 8'3" frame...

More likely the vehicle uses some old freebie script that was written about 5 years ago..

It gives me a headache just thinking about all the sim crossings! :)

It's not in my best interest to point this out because as I make a HUD that's particularly useful on cross-sim excursions, but I suspect that a vehicle's sim-crossing difficulty is highly correlated with the number and complexity of attachments worn by passengers. I haven't done a systematic test of this, but subjectively it sure seems like my probability of success is inversely proportional to how much junk I'm carrying with me across the border. And it kind of makes sense, inasmuch as the crossed-to sim has to assume all the tasks (prims and scripts) in the vehicle and on its passengers at time of handoff. Right?

The other day I went back and forth on that red line throughout the Atoll, stations 1-16 and back. I had one crash.

More often than not, I don't have problems at sim crossings. If I start going off to oblivion, I stop touching the movement keys and coast. After a second or two things bounce back and I can continue. I think what gets most people in trouble at sim crossings is the tendency to flail on the movement keys during slow handoffs.

That would be the Second Life Railroad. Four different lines built, two of 'em ready to go into service today. The only two that really have major problems on 'em still are Tuliptree-Jubata (which really is an isolated tail of the Torva-Clearwing Union line, doesn't have railroad crossings built) and the Vicinia Quay-Crumbi Union station. The VQ-CU line has only one station on it right now in VQ, the Bhaga-Clearwing Union line is going to get a new platform at Crumbi Station, yet to be built right at the track split in Crumbi.

There's also new track being built across the ridgetop near there and where the Route 3 alignment makes a turn towards the end of what's been paved on Route 4; looking at invis, it doesn't appear much work has been put in towards getting that track up and running. There's a non-drivable MOW train at the end of the track (and well past the functional end of track) at the Route 3 curve. It's not clear if the track will eventually be completed and extend down route 3 or where it will eventually go.

Strangely, a B&O boxcar wound up in the MOW train somehow. This is an interesting feat since there's no obvious interchange to B&O anywhere in the SLRR system; in fact, the only interchange in their system is in Calletta, on Tuliptree Road just south of the Route 1/2 junction, a spur headed towards the Great Second Life Railroad terminal and ferry dock towards ANWR and the Colors province in Sansara.

I agree about easing off the controls when starting to drift, but nonetheless the success of a crossing can really depend on the sim being entered. For a while I was regularly running the Heterocera roads and could buzz right through most sim crossing without fail. But there was one sim that would eat my car one way or another on every single crossing, no matter which direction I approached it. And it did this for months, despite having few or no agents and clean sim stats. It got so I just developed routes around that sim, but I should try it again and see if it has improved.
