Damn you all, I just ordered the first book from Amazon. Just... can't... take it anymore.
If you think you're in agony now, wait till you've read a few paragraphs. ;)

I do see a certain drifting of SL Gor towards Steam Punk. It's all a plot by the Priest Kings to annex Caledon, I suspect.

It's in wikipedia; the first three are, in order, Tarnsman, Outlaw, Priest-Kings. I had to look it up. :)

Yes, that is where I got the books I mentioned, and the Ph.D. of Philosophy thing. Both of the first two books, though, have dates of 1967. I do not trust user-created Wiki to put the actual first book first though.

Scott- no worries...I'm sure you will either a) find a builder to help you or b) do it yourself. It was just a random thought.

PS: Oryx in my opinion, John Norton is no great shakes as a writer. The books have discrepancies between them in terms of world building and in fact even in the same book he contradicts himself. I think what makes them endure and what makes so many people enjoy role playing in that world is the tacit permission they imply to behave in certain ways.

Plus, I - personally - enjoy dressing up in scraps of silk and prim jewelry etc. And my partner enjoys ...looking, yeah. LOL

Its not that bad.

While his writing style isnt very good, neither is at least HALF of books and magazines you pick up, probably more.

Tarnsman in particular is a short book - and doesn't have the long tangents that evolve into sermons that are the biggest literary critiques thrown at the author.

I know BDSM, and I know what D&D stands for, but I have never had anything to do with D&D and do not know anything about it.

For me D&D is Dean And DeLuca, a rather nice Supermarket Chain in New York.

Yes, and I have had nothing to do with this chain.

Huh. Gor is BDSM and Dean And DeLuca mixed . . .. Confused, I am.

Ok, I broke down and put in an order for "Volume 1" which contains the first three Gor books, new, for the same price I could get the first book used (after including the price of shipping to the used book price).

Apparently the sex scenes fade to black, so I'll read it as Science Fiction. I like Science Fiction.

This is a Gor thread that has gone on for 3 pages now. Isn't it time for a member of some other RP/Fetish/Lifestyle group to tell us how Gor is evil, repulsive and responsible for the fall of civilization?

I've read the first dozen books or so, and then just had to stop for a while. Brain needed a well deserved break I tell ya. Here is the book list;

1)Tarnsman
2)Outlaw
3)Priest-kings
4)Nomads
5)Assasin
6)Raiders
7)Captive
8)Hunters
9)Marauders
10)Tribesmen
11)Slave GIrl
12)Beasts
13)Explorers
14)Fighting Slave
15)Rogue
16)Guardsman
17)Savages
18)Blood Brothers
19)Kajira
20)Players
21)Mercenaries
22)Dancer
23)Renegades
24)Vagabonds
25)Magicians
26)Witness

Toss in Of Gor after every title lol. I actually have all but one, and after getting them found out they are in SL somewhere. The entire set of books on notecards...if you can believe it. Shocking since so few READ them before "playing" Gor. I love laughing at some of the redudant terms in profiles and the simple errors that would be easily avoided by picking up a book about the RP you are doing. Oy!

Oh, and yea, I read them even though I am *not* Gor. My curiosity got the better of me.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Norman

I've read reviews of his later stuff, and from what I've seen, he gets pretty long-winded about sociology, psychology, etc. I'll wait and see. If I could slog through "Atlas Shrugged" by Ayn Rand (5 stars from me, btw) I guess I can handle this guy. Hopefully.

He gets long-winded in the Gor books as well. I started losing my focus around vol 15 and then got it back , then lost it...but ...kept...rreading...unnhhh

I thought the first 12 or so were excellent though.

(kinda got pissed that he left Tarl and started writing about Jason....but then he went back to Tarl...I guess it was needed shift...meh....whatever)

Yes. You are evil for spreading the death and destruction of trees. I hope that you at least used small font and double-sided the print-out.

i suspect that gor attracts quite a few people that merely use it as a vehicle to fulfil a perversion, much how satanism or paganism is used by some. they dont particularly care about the core of the belief but are drawn toward a sexual aspect of it.

There are sex scenes? Dang, I need to re-read all of those books again! Ok honestly, I wouldnt call them sex scenes, maybe...sex hints. lol Science Fiction is the best thing to call them. They really arent all that bad, but the writing style can get to you after a while. Like I said, taking a weel needed brain break from them here. TBH, Gor in the books isnt anything close to Gor in SL. I more call it Online Gor. Very very different.

Personally drawn by the space opera aspect. Hope it actually has some of that in there . . .

1) thank-you for the list of the books :)
2) I meant that what I had read indicated that when a sex scene would have started, the book "fades to black" like in an old movie . . .

I printed them in small font on bio-degradeable toilet paper...then rolled that around my legs to be used as socks. This way I am using less laundry detergent for washing.

Ohh I know (#2) I was responding as a joke of course. They do in fact fade to black, I think it would be surprising to people that RP Gor online how *little* sex or comments about it and slaves are in the books. After seeing Gor in SL and other online venues, I know I was! Maybe there is more in the later books, but from what I read thus far its not the main topic as many make it out to be.

As of last night, at least, we were still flying our flag... grins

We've sent expeditions to parts of the mainland, but haven't had a lot of exposure in Gor areas that I'm aware of.

I wonder what they would make of NeoVictorians arriving by steam airship?

We could send a naturalist to make drawings, which I'm sure would be a best seller back home!
