... I usually am able to latch onto one character, but none in this book spoke to me...

Y.T.'s the character I liked the best. She's got endless spunk. I like Hiro Protagonist (what a fantastic name for a lead character!) too, but he's too mixed up and angsty to be my very favorite.

It was a kick to find Uncle Enzo's mafia ("You've Got A Friend In The Family";) and Mr. Lee's Greater Hong Kong here in SL. Although ACS is really much more like Mr. Lee's empire than is the SL version of Greater Hong Kong.

The best part of Snow Crash that I am enjoying is the explanation for the language diversity. Yes, I realize it is absolute fiction- but it is as good an explanation as an actual Tower of Babel. I am getting a hell of a kick from the book- and there are a lot worse fiction out there - a lot better too, but that wasn't the point.

You have all made me really hungry now, so I'm going to the little pizza shop here in the town I work in and having pizza! Thanks for helping me make up my mind about lunch.
Oh, and I never read Snowcrash, and after reading these posts I'm still undecided. I'm a Stephen King, Dean Koontz, Nora Roberts, JD Robb type of reader. But since I read voraciously, I think I'll check out a copy just to see if I like it.

That's the best course.Try it yourself. I wouldn't not read a book because I said it wasn't any good. If I could do it any better, my name would be on the cover.

I like Koontz and Nora/J.D. too. But Stephenson writes a bit more like Joe Heller ("Catch-22";). A sort of wry, black humor pervades the whole thing.

If you try him, and you DO like him, I HIGHLY recommend his multi-book novel The System Of The World. It's not often you encounter a three thousand page page-turner.

3000 pages?? That would keep me occupied for a while, anyway. I read very fast, especially if it's a really good book. That, however, would take a looooong time. I think the longest book I've read to date is one of Stephen King's. A lot of his are very long, The Stand being one of them, but i'm not sure if that's his longest. Black humor is okay, in the right context. My problem is that a book has to catch me pretty much right away in the beginning. And dialog has to be believable. I used to like Robin Cook's books until it really hit me how unrealistic his dialogue becomes. People, whether they're in the medical field or not, just don't speak the way his characters do. Once I realized that, I had a very difficult time getting into any more of his books.

If I don't eat pizza every day I get really cranky, does that count? :p
