My own ISP's support team have just informed me that the Level3.net routing problem has been resolved. (Responding to a ticket I left earlier.) Not sure if that's reflected in-world because I'm not at home right now. (Will be in 15 minutes now though. )

OK then. I couldn't trace beyond London earlier and kept getting logged out of SL. Now .. From: someone C:\Documents and Settings\Walker>tracert forums.secondlife.com Tracing route to secondlife.com [66.150.244.169] over a maximum of 30 hops: 1 1 ms <1 ms <1 ms 192.168.0.1 2 8 ms 7 ms 8 ms [censored].bethere.co.uk [censored] 3 12 ms 11 ms 11 ms 10.1.2.5 4 10 ms * 222 ms 195.50.112.237 5 12 ms 17 ms 17 ms ae-31-51.ebr1.London1.Level3.net [4.68.116.30] 6 13 ms 17 ms 18 ms ae-1-100.ebr2.London1.Level3.net [4.69.132.118] 7 80 ms 85 ms 90 ms ae-4.ebr1.NewYork1.Level3.net [4.69.132.109] 8 86 ms 90 ms 90 ms ae-91-91.csw4.NewYork1.Level3.net [4.69.134.78] 9 88 ms 90 ms 89 ms ae-94-94.ebr4.NewYork1.Level3.net [4.69.134.125] 10 160 ms 162 ms 162 ms ae-2.ebr4.SanJose1.Level3.net [4.69.135.185] 11 150 ms 162 ms 162 ms ae-94-94.csw4.SanJose1.Level3.net [4.69.134.254] 12 159 ms 162 ms 162 ms ae-92-92.ebr2.SanJose1.Level3.net [4.69.134.221] 13 151 ms 152 ms 151 ms ae-4-4.car2.SanFrancisco1.Level3.net [4.69.133.157] 14 151 ms 152 ms 151 ms INTERNAP-NE.car2.SanFrancisco1.Level3.net [4.78.242.18] 15 151 ms 152 ms 152 ms border2.ge1-1-bbnet1.sfo002.pnap.net [63.251.63.17] 16 151 ms 152 ms 151 ms loadbalancer4.lindenlab.com [66.150.244.169] Trace complete. Latency is a bit high but transatlantic routing is sure as hell fixed.

I'm a bit upset.

I haven't been able to login since I got to London. I'm going to school here, and I assumed I couldn't log in because all the respective ports were blocked, but I got treated really nastily when I asked IT to open some ports for me (I made the mistake of mentioning it was for a game, though). I paid 100 quid for the internet in my room, and I can't make use of it? I mean I can, and I've been able to login to ajaxlife.net without issue. Is there any way I could at least discover what my network looks like, to at least be sure that ports are blocked? I tried tracrting forums.secondlife.com (just like I saw a few posts back; I'm not quite that smart yet), and here's what I come up with: From: someone Tracing route to secondlife.com [66.150.244.169] over a maximum of 30 hops:
1 2 ms 2 ms 2 ms cisco-fins.[my.school'sdomain.uk] [My.IP.Goes.Here] 2 2 ms 3 ms 4 ms cisco-fw.[my.school'sdomain.uk] [138.40.253.254] 3 * cisco-fw.[my.school'sdomain.uk] [138.40.253.254] reports: Destination net unreachable.
Trace complete.
I'm on Vista Home Basic (ugh), on a laptop, connected to my school's ResNet.

Did you make this forum post from your dorm? If so, the school is clearly letting web traffic pass. The traceroute you posted shows that they are stopping traffic based on certain criteria and SL game ports are likely closed. I expect you'd have the same trouble with WoW or bittorrent. Based on the other bits of your post, it seems that IT at your school is pretty resolute; I wouldn't hold much hope of changing their policy. SL is a huge bandwidth hog; it doesn't much surprise me that a school might choose to block it and other high load services.

Sigh. Do I have any chance of finding anything free, like a proxy, that I could use to alleviate this?
Probably not, right? There's nothing free out there that could handle such a bandwidth load, I bet. I was poor in the US, but the exchange rate is killing me here in the UK!
Thanks lots, I guess I'll have to wait 'til I get home!
You know what's strange, though? Whenever I used a port scanner (like canyouseeme.org) to check if any of my ports were open, even 80 timed out.
Do you know of a reliable way to scan for open ports?
Thanks for everything.

Ask for the name of the IT manager, write them a polite letter and ask for them to explain why you as a paying customer cannot use the internet how you want to. Explain that the exchange rate makes 100 quid expensive, explain that it's not porn you're using.

If you are in a densely populated part of London, it would obviously be quite wrong of you to connect to the internet via one of the many unencrypted wi-fi routers within range without obtaining permission. I would never condone you do such a thing. Who on earth is giving you these ideas? Honestly. Kids today!

I can't access any wifi from my room; I was considering coffee shop-ing it one day, or maybe even checking out my school's library wifi, if it isn't encrypted. There's something about being able to play in my room that I miss, though. :c

My connection broke and I was unable to acces SL for nearly half an hour. Did get a box telling me to contact support, but couldn't even do that. Looks like LL is having a bad day.
P.S. Up now, and so far acting ok.
