 you cannot be serious. slu is moderated heavily, you just arent permitted to talk about it or question it!
there is a certain crowd that have carte blanche, run feral off the lead and are seemingly not subject to moderation though, so i suppose i can understand the confusion.

I don't post there much, it can be kinda scary but I felt that at the other place that closed down, the name escapes me, Mother someone ran it, that was scarier. Then when that closed plenty moved across to SLU but I've generally found them to be ok.

Sometimes you get out of a forum what you put into it.

Just took a peek at the SLU forums, where they are also discussing this subject. A few interesting posts there:

"I hate to burst your bubble, but they shut down the official forums in 2006. Resident Answers is a pale imitation of the General and Off Topic forums that existed until the fall of 2006. They're also probably annoyed that RA has become something that they didn't intend for it to evolve into."

"Oh, I know, I was there. And then RA became self-censored in a way, as people were worried they would lose what was left."

"I stopped posting regularly in the SL official forums right after they closed up General and Off Topic. Partly because I was seriously pissed off that they took a whole community of people and fucked them royally, partly because if you fuck up and piss off the wrong person on the "official" forums you and your avatar can be banned from SL itself. I think that's wrong and I think it's an intimidation tactic they've kept in force for years simply to keep the rabble from rousing too much.

I have much more fun on SLU and enjoyed Second Citizen until it's demise. I have ventured over to the Resident Answers forums on occasion and found that the atmosphere is just not the same as it used to be."

"How can anyone use the SL forums anymore? They turned off bbcode tags years ago, so it's a half-broken mess of shit."

It's funny how two forums, covering the same virtual world, see each other.

I can't say I have noticed. What drew me was the fact that they actually have a forum section for discussing other virtual worlds, something I received my one and only warning for in the RA forum.

As far as I know this is the first comment from a Linden conclusively indicating the forums are to be shut down and replaced.

From the thread:

May 29, 2009 8:27 AM Catherine Linden says in response to Ghosty Kips:

We are currently designing new forums and discussion groups using the same software we use for the blogs but we have no plans to cut off access to the current forums. When the changeover happens (no date at this time btw), we'll link to the old forums as an archive so that everyone can continue to reference.

Where have we heard that one before? Is this the same New Forum that was supposed to happen last October? I'll believe it when I see it.

Hmm. My corporate wonderland thermometer tells me that if one were to make it hard enough - for example, engage with the Lindens "helpfully" on setting up the new forums, getting them to agree that this or that modification need to be made before they go live - then yes, the switchover would simply never happen. However, I don't have time for such shenanigans nowadays.

You didn't hear it from me.

dunno what that says to you, it says to me it'll be static and unusable.

they want to migrate the forums to a different software, I have no problem with that...

but losing basic functionality along the way? that's beyond worthless.

what do we stand to lose?
Ability to page through responses,
Mark as Read, continuation, see new responses.
Ability to include illustrative pictures
and a host of other features, that aren't suited to a blog software environment.

Forums to be closed... Open one up then?

Why doesn't someone run an independant forum then, surely then people would be happy as long as it is moderated and run fairly? Links to SL can be made. They are not a huge problem to overcome. That way LL/SL would have no influence on what people say with regard to all things related to LL/SL.
Or am I being a bit slow on the uptake here.

After all this is a PPBS and these are freely available on the net.

Yes. He was quite nice in IM. Probably nicer than I deserved..

There are a number of them.. I'm always wary of crossing the RL/SL line - not really interested in having this name exist outside secondlife.com.
