From: Whimsycallie Pegler Oh someone should add the stuff about buying a custom name there.. and link to the info on it.. I am sure they will change your last name if you want that expense. Thats a good idea actually I have my RL name here as well "Iain Sullivan" so I suppose you just need to hope that they use your RL surname as well at some point

From: Argent Stonecutter I'm not talking about he old blog, I'm talking about the forums. They are not being moved, the archived posts will not appear on the blog, and the blog doesn't provide similar functionality to the forums. Old blog posts were an example of a new system being incorporated that was different from the old, that managed to retain old posts. The forum software is merely a platform, if we can't exchange views then it's not really a forum. I've seen no indication that that is going to be the case.

If you pour water into a new jug it's still the same water. People, however, don't pour so well. Pour a community of people into a new piece of software, unless it's very similar to the existing software you change the nature of the community. When it's as different as this one, it's no longer just moving the community, it's replacing it.

It will be disastrous. The blog software is too unwieldy and becomes very difficult to use when a thread gets large. It's supposed to be capable of displaying threaded as well as flat, but I can't get it to display threaded at all. If it could display paged it would be ok, but I don't like threaded forums and flat becomes too unwieldy.
I suppose everyone who doesn't already use the Xstreet forum will move there - unless they close that one too.

The blog system is slow to display a page, at least on my system. As for old blog posts being merged into the current blog system, when I come across an old blog post in Google results, the link does go to a blog post in the current system - but not the right one.

Way to kill off volunteers, LL.
/me will not move to that horrible blog software. If you don't want me helping, I'll take my time elsewhere.

This is not the first time that they have changed the forum software, and there was lots of shouting the last time.

It looks pants...you would think that M.Linden would have gotten his ex-colleagues from Organic Inc to build LL a proper styled forum.
The one i just visted is yukky....puke material!....i guess i'll be residing on XStreet forums instead.

Waahhhh!!!
This is not mock forum crying. This is real forum crying. There's killing a fairly nicely working obsolete forum and replacing it with a something new and lousy.
Ah well, maybe it'll get moved to Google Wave next.

To me, the most important use of the forums is to discover when SL is broken. We usually find out about a half hour faster here in the forums than the official grid status.

I don't know if anyone here has heard of Stratics, but they have a subforum set aside for Second Life here: Granted, it's just a single subforum, but I'm very sure if it starts getting heavy traffic, it will be turned into its own full-fledged portal, with user-generated guides, its own front page, and its own set of subforums. It's worth taking a look at it as a possible Second Home (tm) for us forumites. The forum software is robust, uses vBulletin, and works well. The site is professionally run and free of Linden Labs' influence. It is also well-moderated (yes, I am one of the mods there).

It will be a shame to see the old fella go. I reside on a lot of forums and this is by far the most unmoderated unruly forum I participate in. Some of the stuff I have posted here over the years without even a warning is shamefull.
It will be harsh if they dont transfer accross the old threads. There is a wealth of information here to help new and old players alike. It should be archived somewhere surely?

From: Rock Vacirca This is not the first time that they have changed the forum software, and there was lots of shouting the last time. Was the earlier change qualitatively like this one? (That is, a move from a fairly functional system to a less-responsive one that discourages interactivity?) (I don't intend this question to convey any snarkiness, toward anyone...I'm genuinely curious.)

A more controlled, 'sanitised' forum would go along with the more controlled, 'sanitised' SL world we're about to witness and be part of. So it makes sense. But it does make me wonder if all this is leading up to some bigger change, such as bringing kids in next summer.
In the end it is their product, our only vote is our dollar.

ive noticed a few vultures arriving from across the street the past few days here to recruit kool-aid-drinkers to join the family no doubt.

From: Ponsonby Low Was the earlier change qualitatively like this one? (That is, a move from a fairly functional system to a less-responsive one that discourages interactivity?) (I don't intend this question to convey any snarkiness, toward anyone...I'm genuinely curious.) The first forum was very functional, and was also a vbulletin board, but an earlier version (2.2. . View it here: http://web.archive.org/web/20040707093149/http://forums.secondlife.com/I guess people just don't like change, and several members complained at first, when it was changed in Aug 2004, and also required that you had to log in with your SL login details too, then upgraded to a newer (and visually very different) version of vbulletin (3.0.3) in Oct 2004, but those complaints soon passed. This forum still uses the old vbulletin, ver. 3.0.5. The latest version of vbulletin is 3.8.2. http://www.vbulletin.com/I think we need to give the new forum a good workout before we start calling it names. There is always the SLUniverse forum to fall back on, where there is no moderation whatsoever (that I can see), if that is what people here will miss. Rock

I don't mind these forums closing if the replacement ones are better. But these ones should still be archived so we can see them - at least for a while. Also there should be an overlap so we can still post replies on here to existing threads but any new threads would have to go on the new forums. But to be honest, I'm not sure I really know what I'm talking about!

The Clique over there is even worse that the one here. I'll be sandpapering my own testicles before I participate in that forum again.

you cannot be serious. slu is moderated heavily, you just arent permitted to talk about it or question it! there is a certain crowd that have carte blanche, run feral off the lead and are seemingly not subject to moderation though, so i suppose i can understand the confusion.
