You use hotmail for email.
You have that hotmail email set for your account.
You have IM to email enabled.
If you look on your hotmail, you will see an offline message sent to you before that one was sent to them.
-----
That email message if you search it, is a well known hotmail spam going around through compromised accounts. I've had customers computers here in the shop because all there contacts had received that same email. Change your passwords everywhere. And people don't worry about an exploit in SL that resulted in this, there isn't one.

Yes, this makes a lot of sense. I've had that hotmail spam thingy. A good indication that this is what has happened is if your email suddenly gets a pile of automated failed delivery replies from out-of-date contacts. Yes, change all your passwords ASAP. If it's any consolation, nothing else bad came of it, in my case at least. The worst thing was the embarrassment of having just about everybody I know saying, "hey, I got a really weird email from you".
