yes.. I have heard of several incidences of this happening. The im was in the im box with her name and date and time stamped. The messages were obviously out of character for her and sent with malicious intent. Friendships were damaged and she has no way to prove it was not her who sent them. Reports have been filed and yet they kept happening....not sure how this is possible but it is scary.

*puts her hand up* Yes, I always read forums of places at the start, gives you good background and info.

I agree and I don't mean to suggest that NO NOOBS EVER GO TO FORUMS but alot DON'T.

I also don't mean to make it sound that I am bashing ALL alts either. There ARE some that use alts for purposes other than griefing or using them as traffic bots. I for one have a few that I use to make clothes and make them all shapes and sizes for different outfits.

Did you also know that there is a TOS violation that states you can AR someone over unwanted/overt spam? Sooooo if someone is spamming others using YOUR name, you could actually receive an AR on YOU that would be false.

Got screen shot? This is very serious indeed. The name must have been "spoofed" with a zero for O then.

Also trust me... I will be checking the copies of MY name and reporting them all because at this point ANY one copying my name that closely or others for that matter are only doing so to be stupid and/or cause trouble for the original name.

I've looked for names similar to yours but didn't find any.

I don't want to say that this is the Friday thread... but it is Friday, and this *is* a thread.

There is no D0reese Dufaux avatar, nor any other similar variation.

Did you actually see it or see the actual IM log? Many people often *think* something is in an IM window, when it is really in the main chat window. If your friend logs chats and IMs, then it will be easy enough to verify the exact avatar name that the message supposedly came from.

It is also possible your password has been compromised.
If it truly came from that account, I would place money on the password being comprised before assuming a gaping security hole that allows one to send IMs from a different account.

If you think about what we actually know here, it's very little.

Doreese's friend said that it appeared in the IM window, but Doreese couldn't have seen that. So we don't know whether the message really *was* in the IM window.

Doreese apparently doesn't know how the name was spelled, so we have no reason for thinking it's an alt with a similar name.

As far as we know, it only happened once, the only statement to the contrary being first-time poster Ravyn's apocalyptic claim.

So... are we getting all bent out of shape over nothing?

Is it even possible that Doreese did an accidental cut-and-paste into the IM window?

It is also possible your password has been compromised.

This. Change your password IMMEDIATELY! Also run a complete scan of your computer for viruses, trojans, and keyloggers. And don't make your password something that can be guessed.

I've never heard of an IM being spoofed. Unless maybe they meant an IM sent to the person's email in which case maybe the email was spoofed, to appear as if it came from SL and from your av. That seems more possible.

I just want to gently suggest that you have your ratios backward. MOST people use alts for good reasons; a FEW use them for bots or griefing. A very few, even; in my opinion.

This may not have happened within SL at all. If you have ever had IM-to-email with your friend, then you have an email address sitting in your inbox that can be used to send an IM back to your friend withing the necessity of SL access. I would guess that a garden variety email malware that looks through your emails, picks out addresses and then spoofs messages from you to the addresses it finds could have picked up that email address that sends an IM to your friend.

Because I don't think someone using their REAL account would take the chance of getting AR'D or banned. Alot of griefers, rippers, thieves & spies use ALT accounts because they don't want others to know who they are.... simple.

Spies?

How do we know you are not an ALT? Prove it.

*comes in and hedges his bets on this*

You use hotmail for email.
You have that hotmail email set for your account.
You have IM to email enabled.
If you look on your hotmail, you will see an offline message sent to you before that one was sent to them.
-----
That email message if you search it, is a well known hotmail spam going around through compromised accounts. I've had customers computers here in the shop because all there contacts had received that same email. Change your passwords everywhere. And people don't worry about an exploit in SL that resulted in this, there isn't one.

Then file a case with LL so they find out about it. They keep logs, which might shed some light.

But I'm skeptical -- I don't think the protocol permits this (at least, not if the IM tab had your name on it).
