From: Conifer Dada Actually the missing person who is the subject of this thread was quite amusing. To me, his grammatical pedantry and other little foibles usually seemed a bit tongue in cheek. He's probably got an alt. that says things like 'Cor blimey, ha's ya farver mate? Ain't seen 'im for blinkin' ages, must be blinkin' munfs since I met 'im dahn da blinkin' eel pie caff! Hello John, got nu mot'ah?" Thanks for correcting 'fosset' to 'faucet' - I think I'll just stick to 'tap' though, it's easier! If the person was amusing at all, then you were probably never a target of his sarcasm and commentaries. It has certainly driven me away because there was something very personal in many of his comments. There were a few, in particular, that did take me by surprise. Upset would be too strong a word since I have no personal connection except this link of teh forum. I do go into the sl world but have never meet teh poster and experience has taught me to stay away as much as possible from places where other people congregate. I am not easily offended but the poster was setting out at every opportunity to offend and dig deep into chinks in armour. I am certain that even this comment by myself will inspire a reposte by the person in question. I am English too by birth, but I dont live there. I refer to myself as British (not Brit - it does have connotations). I think its great to meet other UK people here. My sl partner is English. We have scattered ourselves around teh globe and this helps us maintain some connection. I'll prolly come back here when I feel I have something to say or post, but now I know that every time I "open my mouth" there is a chance I'll be brought to task for grammar, clumsiness of speech, incorrect geography, immorality or any other quibble by a far more superior being than myself, I wont be here as much as I would like.

From: Pserendipity Daniels Well done, you have obviously learned something during my absence. Primarily, I learned how nice your absence was.

I'm thankful for this thread in that I learned that some British people, though not all, think of the term Brit in the negative. I have used the term to describe my British friends before, both in SL and RL, and have never used it in a negative way.

From: Love Hastings Primarily, I learned how nice your absence was. Congratulations once again. You have joined the vocal minority. Pep (I didn't miss you at all either. But then, you never have anything useful or interesting to say so why should I?)

Bizarre, I just booted up my viewer and got a message that my firewall has blocked the RC viewer. Odd because I used it earlier today and received no such message. Has anyone else seen this?

I think all these kinda comments (while I agree are hard to avoid) are really not constructive or even humorous. Its good to have a bit of wit and intelligence in teh questions and answers but its too easy to get distracted and become a "vocal minority" that, amazingly, could be read around teh entire globe. If we argue why not argue with some smart humour and some snazz rather than this outdated schoolmaster retortes? I had enough of those when I was hold up in boarding school. I dont need them here. And tehy were made then as now with the same intentions - to alleviate the teacher's dislike for a possibly younger person, to vent anger and frustration at someone who is happy and simply to appear to be "cock of the walk". In my real life I am going back to listening to BBCRadio 1 and reading "Emma" by Jane A. Mr Knightley is just about to take them all for a slog round teh gardens. And its a realy hot day Yes. Austen and Radio One are compatible.

Pep (I didn't miss you at all either. But then, you never have anything useful or interesting to say so why should I?) I think I bring out in you what you try so hard to bring out in others. I didn't say I didn't miss you, btw. I just said how nice it was while you were gone. Was that because you were away, or was it nice regardless of your presence?

From: someone To be clear, are you saying that Welsh folks aren't British? Is "Britain" just too vague a term? I see that Wales is part of "Great Britain", "United Kingdom", "British Islands", and "British Isles" from this neat diagram... What would the right terminology be? The United Kingdom (UK) is the overall nation - in full, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Equivalent to 'USA' Great Britain is the island that includes England, Wales and Scotland, but the term (or just 'Britain') is often used to mean the whole of the UK. England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland are really 'states' within the UK, not unlike how the USA has states. The British Isles is a purely geographical term that refers to the islands of Great Britain and Ireland (including the Republic of Ireland that is not part of the UK) The British Isles also includes the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands, which are not part of the UK. Equivalent to 'North America' sort of thing.

Pep (You can call me whatever you like, but it doesn't mean I am) I wasn't asking you. You've already stated your position in this matter, though you didn't actually answer the question asked. Damn, Pep. I think I am glad you're back.

Pep (In so many ways) And your attitude - so truly an "educator" - is exactly teh reason why I cried and begged - BEGGED - my mum and dad to take me away from that F**KING school. And so they did. Keys in teh ignition - restart of my life. Back to Austen.
