That's the reason he posted it, because to get what people want (the ability to be lazy and let the government do the work for them so they feel "safe"  , all essential freedoms will be either abolished, curtailed, taxed, regulated, and/or heavily monitored. "Fair use" is abolished. DRM will be everywhere, and you won't be able to access your OWN content without licensing yourself. Won't that be a fun world? Indeed, as you notice none asking for a solution are speaking up... now that they realize what they are really asking for.

The good stuff takes a lot of hard work. There's very little fun to be had. SL worked for years without that level of "good stuff". I think that, in fact, not having it might improve the experience, due to bringing back the fun you mentioned... ... but it would also drive away a lot of users who have no interest in creating, which would not be good for anyone, most obviously LL.

You are the ones here wanting to deny people privacy from unverified people, it's simple if you won't/can't verify to get into the adult continent, you have all the rest of SL to go to. If you can't verify because you live in one of those countries that has high speed internet but still uses chickens for currency or are in the witness protection scheme and fear the false ID they gave you will fail, bad luck, think of the people in counrties that barely have phones, LL is denying them from SL too. I guess we shouldn't give our ID to our employers either for risk of private data theft or are they magically impenetrable? They could sell your data to marketing companies too.

... but it would also drive away a lot of users who have no interest in creating, which would not be good for anyone, most obviously LL. and a lot of the fun in the early days came from the fact that SL was a new toy. SL itself was the good stuff. SL will never be new again. Not unless we invent a machine to wipe our memories.

Here, it's specifically about having just enough identity information to erect some barrier to endless accounts associated with the same RL person from which anonymous copyright violations can recur with impunity. And this verification only for those accounts that want to be able to transfer in-world assets. The other suggestion of a US$495 up-front charge would erect a sufficient barrier, too, I think, but would have unacceptable side-effects (almost everybody would leave).

As a writer and musician, I look at it this way:
The Owner tag in SL is like putting a copyright notice on the bottom of a page. Does that give you ownership rights? You bet. However, if someone steals your stuff and you drag them into court, you damn well better have an official copyright registration on file or you'll get no compensation. There are avenues to ensure LEGALLY DEFENSIBLE ownership and SL should be no different.
The only way I can see LL looking at the problem more seriously is if there is an organisation where SL creators can, for a fee, officially register their creations. This organization would then maintain records and prosecute offenders.
For example, in RL I have the Copyright Office to register ownership and ASCAP to make sure I get paid when people use my work. I also need to use other services, like HFA, to pursue piracy claims. Sure I can choose not to participate in any of these, but with all the hard work I put into my stuff, I want to make sure I'm the one who profits from it, both in recognition and $$.
Its all about how serious you are about your "business" and I'm sorry folks, but if you want to play with the rest of the creators of this world, you gotta pay like we do.

I know not everyone would - but there don't seem to be any other options if the goal is to lock down content theft and stop others from profiting illicitly from someone else's work. Either we learn to live with the theft and do the best we can to shut it down when we find it or we accept a draconian system where only "registered & approved" users can sell content. That's a bit hypocritical coming from you Isablan.

Lilith, I do completely feel for you. You know some of my own legal battles that I have and am continuing to struggle with inside Second Life. *hugz* Hang in there as frustrating as it may be. One of the downfalls to defending ones Intellectual Property in Second Life is that you change from the ranks of every day virtual netizen to becoming an evil villan and well on your way to the most hated list. It should not be this way. Why is it in our 3D society, that the true villan is turned into a martyr where the real victim and in this case the legitmate copyright holder/agent vilified? It is a question of morality/ethics at the end of the day. Allot of finger pointing can go around but it will not solve anything. Linden Lab is not some evil brooding monster who cares little for the community. Of course they care and continue to prove that with policies, blogs and other type of community involvement. They are simply limited as to what they can do. As we all know, it is simply impossible to control IP theft. The most that we can hope for is to wisely choose the battles that we feel are worthwhile. I think for the most part, people are honest. Honest consumers will seek out legitimate resources. Sometimes these consumers can get caught in the crossfire of pirated goods in which they become both the victim and infringer all in one go. It can be a precarious situation to choreograph in which misunderstandings and hurt feelings arise. It is a nasty end game. Blaiming Linden Lab will not resolve the issues. There is a process. If one feels that their IP is being violated, then file a DMCA if trying to negociate with the infringer does not pan out. Linden Lab acts upon the DMCA without getting directly involved or making a judgement either way. It is up to the accused party to simply accept or to counterfile. If the copyright infringement claim is counterfiled, then it is up to the infringed to take to court or not. It is really as simple as that. It is our responsibility to protect, defend our copyright/IP. That is the only way it can ever be. Linden Lab is not allowed to provide legal advice or to make judgements as to whom is right or wrong. They as an ISP, according to the badly outdated DMCA, must follow certain procedures to qualify for Safe Harbor protection. I do not think that something similar to "There" is a good solution. Personally I would be turned off on it if it were. It would hamper creativity immensely... to first have to be approved, etc and so on? No thank you. I prefer instead the free enterprise that Linden Lab fosters inside Second Life. However, an ultra premium account for merchants could help deter theft. But nothing can completely wipe it out. Even then I am not sure I would support such a move. IP theft is not an SL exclusive problem. This is a global issue online and off. I suggest that content creators protect the work that they feel is viable/valuable by wireframe, screenshots and dated documentation.. and then registering it with your local government copyright agency. This way if a need ever does arise for legal proceedings, you will be prepared. One of the things that I do love about SL is the artistic freedom. Let's keep that freedom alive.

If every single day, people came into your home and stole something from you. Doesn’t matter how hard you work ….. soon there would be nothing left.
If SL today is the ‘SEED’ of the future, what plant will grow ?
Will it be a strong healthy plant, luscious leaves reaching up to the sun and sky, full of blossoms and ready to fruit ? or will it be diseased, riddled with parasites .... duplicating, replicating, duplicating, replicating, sapped, depleted, undermined, never reaching maturity, never producing a flower, never producing a fruit.
The disease is already here. The parasites unchecked. The plant needs immediate, urgent attention ! Has the garden been abandoned ? Where are the gardeners ?
Anonymous accounts and ‘replicating tools’ are an extremely unhealthy mix and together they create a very sickly environment ...... It's like trying to grow corn and keep crows in the same field.

I am also a writer/muscian/singer and cannot possibly ever imagine not actually registering my work with the copyright agency. What allot do not realize is that even though your work is considered copyrighted from the moment of conception, if you go to court.. you are required to have registered the material.. and even then you will need to PROVE it so be prepared. Allot of people in SL complain about copybot this and copybot that when infact little crimes are commited by the infamous copybot. Some of the things that people claim are infringed upon actually are not. Take for example someone creates a virtual lamp that is a mock up of a basic RL one.. then person B comes along and does the same exact thing that person A did. If this lamp is unique enough both person A and B are guilty. The same goes with photo resourcing of clothes, skins, and so on. So many skin designers scream that this person stole that and so on, etc when both or all probably used the same exact resources at 3D.sk. Or how about textures? When I opened my business 3D Concepts one year ago, I was shocked to see that over 50% of Second Life was illegally textured with pirated textures from the graphic artists and companies that I represent. Yet merchants became rather hostile and defensive, defending their self proclaimed right to use that which did not belong to them in the first place.. including filing false DMCA's against others who dared to violate a copyright that they did not own. I do not think that something similar to "There" is a good solution. Personally I would be turned off on it if it were. It would hamper creativity immensely... to first have to be approved, etc and so on? No thank you. I prefer instead the free enterprise that Linden Lab fosters inside Second Life. However, an ultra premium account for merchants could help deter theft where RL info is used such as in age verification. But nothing can completely wipe it out. Even then I am not sure I would support such a move. It is would be too complicated to enforce and sorta take part of the fun out of SL. LL would become more of a police state. IP theft is not an SL exclusive problem. This is a global issue online and off. I suggest that content creators protect the work that they feel is viable/valuable by wireframe, screenshots and dated documentation.. and then registering it with your local government copyright agency. This way if a need ever does arise for legal proceedings, you will be prepared. One of the things that I do love about SL is the artistic freedom. Let's keep that freedom alive.

If SL today is the ‘SEED’ of the future, what plant will grow ?
Will it be a strong healthy plant, luscious leaves reaching up to the sun and sky, full of blossoms and ready to fruit ? or will it be diseased, riddled with parasites .... duplicating, replicating, duplicating, replicating, sapped, depleted, undermined, never reaching maturity, never producing a flower, never producing a fruit.
The disease is already here. The parasites unchecked. The plant needs immediate, urgent attention ! Has the garden been abandoned ? Where are the gardeners ?
Anonymous accounts and ‘replicating tools’ are an extremely unhealthy mix and together they create a very sickly environment ...... It's like trying to grow corn and keep crows in the same field.

The Owner tag in SL is like putting a copyright notice on the bottom of a page. Does that give you ownership rights? You bet. However, if someone steals your stuff and you drag them into court, you damn well better have an official copyright registration on file or you'll get no compensation. There are avenues to ensure LEGALLY DEFENSIBLE ownership and SL should be no different.
The only way I can see LL looking at the problem more seriously is if there is an organisation where SL creators can, for a fee, officially register their creations. This organization would then maintain records and prosecute offenders.
For example, in RL I have the Copyright Office to register ownership and ASCAP to make sure I get paid when people use my work. I also need to use other services, like HFA, to pursue piracy claims. Sure I can choose not to participate in any of these, but with all the hard work I put into my stuff, I want to make sure I'm the one who profits from it, both in recognition and $$.
Its all about how serious you are about your "business" and I'm sorry folks, but if you want to play with the rest of the creators of this world, you gotta pay like we do. He is absolutely correct. I am also a writer/muscian/singer and cannot possibly ever imagine not actually registering my work with the copyright agency. What allot do not realize is that even though your work is considered copyrighted from the moment of conception, if you go to court.. you are required to have registered the material.. and even then you will need to PROVE it so be prepared. Allot of people in SL complain about copybot this and copybot that when infact little crimes are commited by the infamous copybot. Some of the things that people claim are infringed upon actually are not. Take for example someone creates a virtual lamp that is a mock up of a basic RL one.. then person B comes along and does the same exact thing that person A did. If this lamp is unique enough both person A and B are guilty. The same goes with photo resourcing of clothes, skins, and so on. So many skin designers scream that this person stole that and so on, etc when both or all probably used the same exact resources at 3D.sk. When I opened my business "3D Concepts" (which provides professional licensed textures to SL residents) one year ago, I was shocked to see that over 50% of Second Life was illegally textured with pirated textures from the graphic artists and companies that I represent. Yet merchants became rather hostile, defending their self appointed proclaimed right to use that which did not belong to them in the first place.. including filing false DMCA's against others who dared to violate a copyright that they did not own. Hypocricy. This still goes on. But is it the fault of Linden Lab? No. One of the downfalls to defending ones Intellectual Property in Second Life is that you change from the ranks of every day virtual netizen to becoming an evil villan and well on your way to the most hated list. It should not be this way. Why is it in our 3D society, that the true villan is turned into a martyr where the real victim and in this case the legitmate copyright holder/agent vilified? As we all know, it is simply impossible to control IP theft. The most that we can hope for is to wisely choose the battles that we feel are worthwhile. I think for the most part, people are honest. In 3D it's common practice to set the texture size according to how visible it is.
SL is different in that we can (and often do) zoom right in on a object. So the 'small texture for a small item' rule doesn't really apply here.
A ring on a avatar's finger can attract as much attention as a 10 meter high statue. So a small item shouldn't necessarly mean less detail.
It's probably best to leave it to LL to size the textures according to how close somebody zooms into the item. Who knows, they may do this already..

Now it happens to be that I am using Vryls textures for my plants (as soon as the business gets back online, that is), and they are not all the same size. Some 512 some 1024 if I remember well.
After creating my 1/4 sim parcel with about 500 different plants, I had people visiting, who were amazed how fast the store loaded for them. Even while I was kind of worried about the big textures as well, it happened to make no difference at all. But no scripts were running (except a few teleporters), so only the textures had to load.
Don't forget some plants can be pretty big. The trees I sell need their 1024 texture to keep the detail when coming very close. The small plants can do with a 512, but the bigger ones really can use their 1024.
Back to the OT (Original Thread). MortVent says that no one of the people asking for the solution, are speaking up. Well, they possibly do not all have the need to repeat themselves endlessly. People gave their opinion about the possible solutions, and go on with their second lives. Somehow you feel the need to hammer your point into our heads again and again. Don't be surprised if no one speaks up and just lets you talk. As for me, I will give you the credits for the last post in this thread, as I am done as well.

I guess I'm done, too, except for one reminder: Those who sell textures, or who are in original texture-intensive businesses, would do well to consider voting for http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/SVC-3448. That's not the specific plight of the OP in this thread, but across the board, the widespread "leakage" of copyrighted textures is much aggravated by the current need of texture sellers to distribute their products with full permissions. It just doesn't have to be that way.

SL will never be new again. Not unless we invent a machine to wipe our memories. Hundreds of users still join every day who have no memories of SL. The point at which a person could, by creating things, define the world is past - that's fine. However, we've now reached the point where creating things camparable with the world standard is so much work that it isn't really worth it unless you're going to sell them. The in-world rewards of having them simply as your own don't pay off the work involved in creating them from scratch and the actual monetary cost of buying the necessary tools. That's actually a sign of a developed economy, of course - if it WAS worth it to create your own, compared to buying one of 100 total sold copies of a sold item, then the price would be 100x too high. I guess what I'm saying is that we have to look at who's doing the content theft. If it's genuine professional thieves who are doing it to make money then efforts to stop them won't help too much - even if you put in registration, they'll register data gotten with identity theft or addresses in Malaysia, etc. where your lawsuits won't reach. Either that, or they will "salami slice" from smaller creators who don't make enough to sue - a creator who makes US$5/week isn't likely to sue, but if you steal from 100 of them, that's US$500/week (and AFAIK you can't file a joint suit for copyright unless it was a jointly copyrighted work). But if it's just regular users who's disenfranchised from the economy then that's a problem to address directly, not by putting in technical measures. SL used to be much less secure than it is now and there wasn't the current level of content theft. I mean, I actually saw a site advertising "the copybots you need to succeed in SL business" - that anyone should think that is really a sad, sad sign.
