Ok aside your looks can change with the slide of a mouse. Even in RL one ca change looks with plastic surgery. OK and in RL there are not vampires running around wanting to bite everyone haha. People have friends, enemies, there are beutiful and ugly people, trashy neighbors, prostitutes, chruches, clothes that may or may not fit, a currency system, crooks and honest people, lovers, haters...
All joking aside, the more I get into this SL, the more I notice there ain't much difference between this and real life.
So for the bad experiences - I read somewhere that SL is suppose to be a fun place away from the world, not a real world away from the real world.
How the hell does it happen that SL has so many problems that RL does? The only thing exclusive to SL is the eternal lagging and rezzing problem. Even RL lags at times, like at the DMV.
So what gives?

the first difference that popped into my head is you can turn off your computer, but not RL.
second thing is that i can't physically touch anyone in SL.
third, without facial expression, i (personally) can't truly know anyone in SL like RL.

hmmm....lets see....what are the common denominators between SL and RL..... oh yeah,....... PEOPLE. that's why there's no difference..... we still have to deal with the quirks of being human. If you're a loner, like me....who just explores and goofs off taking pics....it's not a bad gig...... SL that is......RL I sometimes HAVE to deal with other people.

While the physical limitations of SL are apparent, I really don't consider one different from the other. I am who I am no matter what. I can't fake or pretend to be someone else i.e. role-play like most other people can. I am simply me. In two weeks, I'll be marrying the woman I met in SL but in RL. So, to me, there isn't much of a difference other than one can accomplish things in SL much easier than in RL. Not everybody has the tens of thousands of dollars to start a RL business, but in SL, they can!
What I don't get is the people who believe they can come to SL and find their own utopia. That simply is not possible when one is dealing with real human beings. They will use you, screw you over, mess around just like they will in RL. People make up RL and SL, so it's not much different apart from lack of physical connection and there are no long lines at the DMV in SL or no DMV at all (at least not that I know of).

Fun part... I'm the absolute opposite. (^_^) Beyond my job... I have little to no contact with other people or anything outside my room. Heck, even at work, I'm not expected to answer a phone or do much more than design stuff and respond to Emails. (^_^) But, in SL I'm talking, chatting, and interacting with tons of people and constantly getting involved in group/community events. (^_^)y

Why not? Your SL is made of the people you surround yourself with, IF you surround yourself with people at all. I know of a few people who spend most of their time isolated on their land doing living their own version of Utopia. Your assertion that people cannot find their own Utopia here is just flat out false. When you can make it Your World, Your Imagination...Then you can make it Your Utopia. You may not have thousands of people living the life you want but then again, look at all the RP sims...Lots of people living in their Utopia in many of those places.

While you are correct, I would not say that my assertion is flat out false. That is like saying that every person who comes to SL looking for a utopia automatically finds it. All I am saying is that unless one isolates themselves, which is pointless (and this is coming from me who is very anti-social but I don't consider my behavior healthy), they are going to have to deal with people. And, people are people, just like the Depeche Mode song.

Some people create things exclusively for their own enjoyment and do not socialise at all. Some people only socialise with their RL partners on private sims. I am not advocating these options but they are valid choices. I think the difference between SL and RL is that in SL you have a greater chance of doing something that you could never do in RL or be something you can never be in RL. For a lot of people, that alone is worth the time being here.

Okay, I can't keep from quipping, but pose balls. SL has them, RL doesn't!
