And a defense against it.
a) Create a custom viewer that doesn't make your "look at" match your camera focus point
b) Ctrl-Alt-Shift cam around which doesn't update your "look at"
c) Don't change anything and simply claim you're using a) and/or b) when you get caught :p

oh I dunno, let's see... girl and guy standing together, they are a couple, she uses this program to see where he is looking by looking through his eyes and lo and behold he is looking at another girl... *fight ensues*

or.. you are in a store... looking at the ad for someone's item and get called AFK all of a sudden and are still cammed on their item... owner gets suspicious because of all the theft going on, looks through your eyes sees you glued to their item pic and you do not respond (because you are AFK) they kick and ban you from the store then start the untrue and unfounded rumor you are a thief, all based on something they should not have been able to see in the first place...

looking through someone else's eyes without their consent is an invasion of privacy in my book. It is like reading their mail, without asking them, or seeing their im's etc...

Not to mention how easy it would be for the peeper to just pick one of the two parties involved in an intimate encounter and watch the encounter through their eyes. Presumably, when you are being intimate with someone that's what you have you camera focused on. This tool is more of a help to the peeper than it is to the people who don't want to be looked at.

I'd be sort of flattered if someone was focusing their camera on me.

Your avatar isn't you. It is more like a comic book that you are creating in real time and publishing o the web. People will look at it. If you don't want them to look at it, stop putting it out there for everyone to see.

Nobody can see the real you, and what you are really doing.

I actually traded for it with some really big guy. He gave me the hat and I gave him a handful of Ginko Bonds. He kept calling me Jack, though.

Given the RL Age of some residents, you should be flattered that someone bothers to look ;)

Show us your real age & self and they'll go elsewhere :D

Hi, I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on how to stop a peeping tom (or jane) from looking at you in your private home. The problem I'm having is that they appear outside of the parcel I am in. What measures can I take to prevent peeping?

Have to tell you...all these people who are saying that people can cam in to see you? They're right - but I know MANY people who have been in SL for over a year and still can't figure out how to disable camera restraints and how to cam once they do.

Two friends, both over a year old, are still doing the "go into the store and fly up to get a close look at the picture" thing, while I stand in the doorway and cam all walls. :)

It's no big deal being watched. It means they find you interesting enough to do so. Take it as a compliment, sort of. And there's nothing you can really do about it as you don't really know if you're being watched or not.

When they don't look at you anymore, that's when you should find it disturbing.

I've pretty much come to the conclusion that if you are so bored in SL that you want to see my cartoon...

Oh, can I? Can I? Can I come watch?

But only if I can bring my binoculars.

the only thing i am enhancing, is the ability to detect who is camming in on you.

As someone who has a few cam-happy neighbors, I'll be the first one in line for this when it's is done :)

Privacy is important because there are some things or activities that we feel belong to us, and it is our decision whether or not to share them with others.

The fact that some people don't really care if other people are spying on them doesn't make privacy any less important. The issue is not necessarly whether one is being watched- the issue is whether someone wants to be watched or not. It's about having choice and control over one's immediate surroundings.

Typically, women are much more concerned about being spied upon than men, because they tend to have more experience and concern with being the victims of stalking and sexual assault. They guy peeping through a woman's window is probably could be a step away from attempting to rape her. Even though there is no physical rape per se in a virtual world, it's very easy to make that mental connection between a virtual behavior and a real-life behavior. Generally, protecting one's body is a much more salient day-to-day concern for women. That's probably why it's harder for some men to understand a woman's fear of peeping.

Peeping in SL probably occurs for one of three main reasons. One is just that a person is bored or curious, and is checking out what the neighbors are doing. Another possible reason is that peeping is preparation or a prelude to other harassment. Finally, if the peeper is someone that the victim knows, it could be a jealousy-related stalking situation.

Point of the matter is, you should have absolute, one-hundred percent authority over who has access to your body (avatar), land, and possessions. Whether or not you share what is yours with others should be your decision alone, and for any or no reason. That's what it means to have freedom.

It's a shame that Linden Labs does not take more interest in developing ways to protect residents' privacy in Second Life. Such action would make Second Life such a better virtual world.

As it turns out, despite the fact that Second Life makes spying on residents easy, very few residents actually have an interest in violating others' privacy. So if you just do things to make spying more difficult, you have a good chance of spending most of your Second Life time without being the victim of spying.

On the other hand, if someone does latch on you to stalk you, your options are severely limited.
