From: Elanthius Flagstaff I have a firm founding in your basic medieval/Tolkienesque stuff but I could probably pull off Gothic. I struggle a little when it comes to anything set on Earth within a couple of hundred years of now. It's like, Ok, everything is exactly the same as it is in my real life except my clothes are a little different and my car runs on steam/nuclear instead of gas. As the Medieval/Tolkien-esque rp's in SL are out of my experience area, I cannot suggest a good rp to join. You might want to check out the Elf Clan as I understand they roleplay. You should be able to get someone to chime in for a good one. Failing that, I would hit up search and go try a few that come up. On the Gothic front, a good one is Eerie Isle and is very well run. I tend mostly towards the post-apocolyptic myself and in fact have recently re-joined City of Lost Angels where I will be helping wreck havok on unsuspecting mortals We always need fresh mortals there btw, hint, hint. Part of the figuring out where you will have most fun is figuring out what you would like to pretend you are.

From: Brenda Connolly CARP can be fun if done with a good group. We had a Forum Cartel CARP outing a while back. We went to the CARP sim, but it was crowded and lagged to Hell, people kept crashing. So instead a bunch of us went over to the sim where Oryx had her shop at the time and played there. It was a lot of fun. Even more fun with clueless people like me that knew nothing about it and showed up wearing damn near nothing to start with.

From: Elanthius Flagstaff I set up an awesome medieval village once but it really just sat empty for 6 months before I gave up on it. I thought you didn't want CARP? (Which I had totally assumed was Creative Anachronism roleplay.) Is it Catch and Release Play?

Is it Catch and Release Play? Yes. You get caught, you remove an article of clothing and are released.

Except the only time I played CARP, I was captured, then told I needed to supply an RL photo of myself to the idiot who captured me. When I refused, he gave me a torrent of personal abuse and threats, then tp'd away leaving me to get the admins to unlock my capture. Needless to say I was not impressed at all. Seems from some of my friends testimony, this is not that uncommon either.

From: Brenda Connolly That's why you do it with people you know. I actually was there with friends. You simply cannot tell the others to leave when you and your friends want to play and so if they capture you, you run the same risk.

I'm with Elanthius on this issue. I'd really love to role play, but it just doesn't work for me. I don't have time to reread the entire Pern series to understand Gianfar. I don't have the patience to attend a class to learn how to behave on a Federation bridge (based on a show I was watching before many of you were born I might add) I tried a little RP in an urban RP area, but found I could do little more than share a virtual hot cocoa with one of the fellow folks trying to get out the city. It seemed rather pointless. Far nicer to me was the low impact sort of role play my alt found at Caledon. There didn't necssarily have to be a story, but most people there fit into the Victorian mold and behave and speak as such. THAT'S what I'm talkin' about. You're never OOC. I really wish there were galactic civilizations and Tolkenesque fantasy counterparts to Caledon. But many of those places are just empty. Des - are there any more of you around?

This is because by far the most popular places are Dark/Gothic and Gorean roleplays. The casual freeform rp can be had at any of the Dark Urban roleplays, CoLA, Toxia etc. City of Lost Angels (CoLA) is almost constantly busy even though they are now up to at least half a dozen sims connected together. They all have stories you can take part of but you can just keep to yourself and rp interactions with others on an ad-hoc basis too.
