I'm specifically not interested in anything heavily into sex, CARP, or Gor or whatever else you freaks do ;-)

Hey, don't knock it until you've tried it! :-)

The groups there seem mostly dead, but this -might be useful- :

http://www.slprofiles.com/secondlifegroups.asp?a=list&id=144
"Players of D&D, White Wolf, GURPS, and other roleplaying games."
- if that's the sort of roleplay you're seeking. There might be other groups at that site as well that can help narrow the focus.

I've been getting a hankering for roleplaying but a fairly half hearted search has only turned up creepy sex places and near empty sims where anyone who is there ignores you anyway.

What sort of place can I drop into, make up a persona and start RPing back and forth on a fairly regular basis? I only have, like, an hour or so to kill and fairly infrequently so I don't have time to gradually build up relationships with people over weeks and weeks.

I'm specifically not interested in anything heavily into sex, CARP, or Gor or whatever else you freaks do ;-)

I think YOU and ME need to make a break from SecondLife.

While you don't have the time to hang out with people while pole or role playing, me don't have the time to answer the many forum posts of you trying to understand what you really want.

It has been well established that we are deviants, not freaks - not even perverts, but deviants.

Midsummer is a nice medievil role play, based loosely on the Monteque and Capulet fued. It does have some magic added in (witches and fairy folk). Last I was there they had a fairly active group and regular events. (it has been about 6 months). the have fencing, dances, and nice pub to hang out in.

We're missing a lot here, though - there's Star Drek RP in SL
I looked into a Star Trek sim but you had to actually attend classes on things like Vulcan philosophy and bridge protocol to stay in the group. If you didn't fill out the class handouts and turn them in they ejected you. That's just too hard core for this ferret.

I'm going to go ahead and plug the rp I GM at.
The sim is named Sadie, and it's an urban setting. The people here are nice, and currently we are redoing most of the sim, and it's looking MUCH better.

I've tried some old west sims, and medieval sims, but they were often pretty dead.

There are some Firefly sims that are fun, and a nice mixture of "shoot-em-up" and hanging around talking. Not a lot of roleplay, but still fun.

Gor has a ton of sims and a lot of roleplay, and enough variety to have hack and slash, or major roleplay, if you want. The subject matter turns some off, but there are so many sims and so many levels, you can find places that aren't highly edgy.

Is Tombstone still around? I looked into it at one time, but didn't have the time to devote back then. Wild West theme, combat (and sex) available, it seemed, but not the point of the exercise. Appeared to be pretty populated back then, but this was over a year ago.

Tombstone is still active. I have a friend there.

I have heard there is a sim called Dune Apocalypse.

A sim called Gianfar is being developed. based on Pern. (see gianfarpeaks.com)

Oh that reminds me there is an Arabian Nights one. Now the advertisement mentioned sex, but there were no orgies or anything going on the several times I visited it. It is a really interestingly done sim too. Interesting enough to just visit to sight see.

When CARP first opened, I couldn't resist it.. I ran around the maze in a Pac-Man avatar. :)

Darn.. I could have used my Ghost avatar and chased you!! ^^

CARP still exists. You can still do it. Of course, there will have to some method of switching, having Pac Man chase Ghost.

Elanthius, what kind of roleplay theme are you interested in? Here are a few to get you thinking:

Pseudo-Historical (Based loosely on history),
Low Tech Fantasy (non-history based),
Post-Apocolyptic (Often incorporates Gothic races),
Victorian (Steampunk, H.G Wells style),
Gothic (Vampires, Demons, Angels, etc.),
Tolkien-esque Fantasy (Elves, Dragons etc.),
High Tech/Space Fantasy (Star Wars/Trek etc.)

Yea, but they're a bit meaner about banning people now. :)

hahahaha, interestingly I found out recently there is a CCS-wide ban on Bloodlines. This is fantastic news for those who don't want anything to do with the game, they can continue to roleplay in the many CCS areas without being hassled. :) VV

I have a firm founding in your basic medieval/Tolkienesque stuff but I could probably pull off Gothic. I struggle a little when it comes to anything set on Earth within a couple of hundred years of now. It's like, Ok, everything is exactly the same as it is in my real life except my clothes are a little different and my car runs on steam/nuclear instead of gas.

I don't mind the nudity and the sex of Gor. I could even handle the combat. But the female disempowerment fantasy is a serious ick for me...

100 years ago:

No internets.
No television.
Radio was about as popular as the Internet in 1978.
Big music copyright issues: sheet music, piano rolls.
Waste from horses was still a big problem in cities.

100 years from now, the internet will have been replaced by something as far beyond it as the Internet is beyond AM radio. We might not even HAVE personal automobiles any more. I don't know if we'll be up against the Singularity or not but either RL will look more like SL, or it'll look more like 1908 than 2008.

Also it can get a little intense. Sometimes you begin to worry that some of them aren't pretending.

Some of them don't think that they are.

CARP can be fun if done with a good group. We had a Forum Cartel CARP outing a while back. We went to the CARP sim, but it was crowded and lagged to Hell, people kept crashing. So instead a bunch of us went over to the sim where Oryx had her shop at the time and played there. It was a lot of fun.
