From: Sunni Jewell I've been having that problem, too. And constant freezing while panning my camera around. Wall boxes in stores take forever to turn from gray, and my feet are sinking into the floors quite a lot.
It's been very bad, lately. Even in my skybox where I rarely experience lag. Today my puppy pushed me THROUGH a wall.

From: Scarlett Melnik Am I the only one experiencing major lag everywhere I go today?
Even places that are usually low lag seem to be causing me trouble. If anyone sees me about can you sling me a rope and try and pull me out of this syrup I seem to be wading through? cheers.
Lol but really, is it just me or are others having a slow day aswell? TON of lag, even when I type for chat the typing is slow and laggy

Also there have been over 60,000 people logged on the last few weeks, up from the usual 50,000 or so. Seems like the population is growing and bogging things down as well as the testing issues.

Is there anything that those of us lagged and crashed have in common? NE United States? nVidia Quadro graphics card? Laptop computers? Cablevsion IO ISP? Windows XP Pro?

Anybody use the Lag Meter under the Help menu?
Also, posting which viewer you're using (standard, first look, windlight, dazzle) might be interesting, as well as which country you're in and, if in the US, if Comcast is your ISP.
When posting system specs, more detail is ok, in moderation, but the stuff that Help -> "About Second Life" displays at the top shows sorta the base info that you should post.
As mentioned elsewhere in these forums, getting a new version of SL can reset all your preferences. I noticed that my high-texture home was taking a long time to rez after I got the new Dazzle viewer - too much gray for longer than normal. Turned out that the new install had just cut my network bandwidth preference all the way down and my cache to 500mb. Got a lot better once I turned those back up.

Problems ever since the 3 day rolling restart earlier. Had not crashed whole computer in ages, just client. Now whole computer freezes up and has to be rebooted, usually several times in a session. Last night - HORRIBLE. Crashed every ten minutes... had to give up. My friend crashed some too, not as much as me. This in places and activities have have not produced crashes before.
2 gigs ram NVIDIA Geforce 7600 Windows xp pro
was running smooth as silk with high draw rate and graphics sliders up and no crashes till that 3 day rolling restart..... sigh

I'd suggest a GeForce of some kind. LOL Yes it is a nVidia Quadro FX 2500 M with 512RAM. My apologies for trunkating. I believe it has 3D capabilities. However, I can't believe that the only people able to move freely around SL without crashing have the top-of-the-line graphics cards. Mine wasn't cheap--eh--but I'm also limited to what I can FIT in my mobile workstation (Dell Precision M90 (desktop replacement system)).

How do I find out what viewer I'm using? I don't think I even really know what a viewer is [/noob]
I've not had a problem with lag until this past week. Saying that, I was on just now and everything seemed just dandy. Maybe SL was just a bit poorly when I logged in recently.

From: Scarlett Melnik How do I find out what viewer I'm using? I don't think I even really know what a viewer is [/noob There are many viewers (releases). You probably have the regular one, you can check the bottom right corner of the log-in page to know which one. I currently use the regular 1.18.5(3), but occasionally use First Look (Windlight) which is still being tested before wide release, and Onrez just for fun. What number is at the bottom of your page?

I've had problems with total computer crashes when SL freezes in last day or two - that's never happened before in my 17 months here. I've has SL crashes and comp crashes but not multiple total crashes when using SL.

What number is at the bottom of your page? I think I must have the regular one then - it says 1.18.3. (5). So you can download other versions that may run better?

I get the same - walking into the floor etc. and, until I just read this thread, I'd put it down to my ISP, because of when it happens. It started for me a week last Saturday, and it's always in the evening (UK time). Each day it begins at around 5 or 6 p.m. (9 - 10 a.m. SLT) and lasts for 5 hours or so. Some days are worse than others. The first 2 days (Sat and Sun) were horrendous, to the extent that it was near impossible to do any creating, but it hasn't been as bad as that since then, although I stop any creating that I'm doing while it lasts.
I can't say that it's not my ISP, but what's been described in this thread is the same as what I experience for those particular few hours each day. Every day I continue as normal, and then I notice it start to happen. I look at the clock and, sure enough, it's around 5 or 6 p.m. UK time. It's always back to normal by 10 or 11 p.m. UK time.

I'd suggest a GeForce of some kind. The Quadro is a workstation card optimized for Open GL. It's fabulous with SL.

Check these threads and SL blogs for a few examples. The last one is simply a way to change your User Interface. There are more, but the one your using, Nicolaz, and Windlight(First look) are probably the 3 most used. http://blog.secondlife.com/2008/02/15/new-small-update-windlight-viewer-80042//327/95/241214/1.htmlhttp://viewer.onrez.com/http://blog.secondlife.com/2008/01/29/mono-beta-launch/http://blog.secondlife.com/2008/02/22/new-release-candidate-viewer-1190-rc3-available/http://blog.secondlife.com/2008/02/19/dazzle/

Thanks for this, I always hear talk about viewers and I've never had the slightest clue what everyone was going on about!

A few suggestions (do in this order)
Clear SL cache wipe all files in c:\windows\temp wipe all files in c:\Documents and Settings\(username)\Local Settings\Temp run 'msconfig' from start -> run, go to startup tab and unclick all startup apps that are not critial (adobe products, cd burning apps, real player, etc) reboot run defrag from system tools
hope that helps!

hope that helps! Won't help, I'm afraid. I had done a total REMOVE of all SL apps and folders and started from scratch. Clear cache frequently both in SL and browser. This is not a problem on the user end. This is a problem with SL. The fact that most people here are citing the same problems within the same recent time frame is proof enough.

I have to admit....

Um, that I finally became so frustrated that I called my ISP and had them come out. The cable guy changed all my connections, gave me a new modem (apparently mine was left over from when dinosaurs roamed the earth) and checked the cable boxes outside (mine and the neighborhood) where apparently there were some rusted (!?) wires. My problem is all but solved now. I have 0% packet loss and lag except in places where we've come to expect it: texture shops, heavily populated sims, etc. Soooooooo...I'm a little embarassed to say that at least in my case, it was mostly on my side. For the most part.
