Nicolaz viewer?

Hi everyone,

What is the Nicolaz viewer? Does it make a difference in performance for those who use it? Should I try it?

Also, yesterday for the first time I had so much lag it was obscene. Everytime I took a walk, or flew or anything I would float off into no man's land. I crashed a total of 6 times (!) in less than 2 hours. I finally logged in frustration.

Has anyone else been having probs like this lately? Oh and I forgot to mention the signifcant delay when making a purchase or trying to edit...etc.

most of that sounds like server lag, which nicholaz client isn't going to do much for, however there are som perks to Nicholaz viewer.

the big one is stability, it has fixes for several memory leaks, which over time will cause the viewer to crash. I've run it in world for 24hrs + at a time. I never managed more than a few hrs with the LL version.

old style interface, where the friends list is seperated from the IM window, allowing the IM window to be much smaller.

fixes for the 'head up your arse', and 'attachments up your arse' bugs starting in BE-v

no stupid stoplight 'lag meter', but rather the old reliable packet loss and bandwidth meters.

redmap warning, when the server silently stops talking to your client, it pops a warning.

I doubt you'll notice a lag or framerate difference between the two, but Nick's client is definitely more stable

Ok, thank you for your answer. How do I get it? Is it downloadable from SL or another source? Was it created by a resident or by LL?

Hi Solange,

I'd strongly recommmend it. Nicholaz is one of the open source contributors. He explains it all in his blog. See the link above in Ann's post. There's also a windlight version btw.
Explanations of how to install the various version are always included in the dowload directory.

Enjoy :D

Does this client already support WindLight? I must admit I have fallen in love with WindLight....

Hi Morwen,

If you go to : http://nicholaz-beresford.blogspot.com/2007/12/aaaaarrrggggh.html

you'll find his patched Windlight client and instructions how to install.

I've become addicted to Windlight as of yesterday, so gonna pop Nic's version on top of the official one later. It's a bit more complicated because you have to override the version number, but he explains it in his instructions.

yes. SL itself just seems laggier lately. But all you said is why I use Nic's viewer. It just seems a bit more stable than the Official Viewer.

Thanks for the replies, and the link Ann.

I'm definately going to try it. I haven't tried windlight yet, can you believe it? Guess it's time for that too.

Have they fixed it so that Avi's don't look bad or is that still a prob?

I downloaded it and installed but when I try to run it I get a message saying that xul.dll was not found. I uninstalled and reinstalled and I still get the same message.

Diana, tke a close look at Nicholaz's installation instructions with respect particularly to two things:

-- You have to install a corresponding version of LL's viewer FIRST, to pick up all the little .dlls etc. that are part of the product.

-- You have to manually copy over 3 or so of Nick's dll's and xml files in addition to the main executable (.exe) file.

They look better, but still pretty bad. I'm not switching until they force us to.

Nicholaz' latest posting is discouraging,
although I am sure what a head ache of work and don't fault anyone for remembering their real lives,
I've been eagerly waiting for his next new release, his versions are great.
I hop on WL from time to time and can run it fine,
and get a quick reminder why my computer and I appreciate the Nicholaz viewer!

Nicolaz's Windlight Patch
02-17-2008 11:46
Windlight. um....WOW.

Decided to try it and it is friggin amazing! Even though my Avi kind of looks like she has a liver disorder now...whatev. I may never go back to the standard viewer.

I did have problems with trying to patch Nic's viewer - I get crash on startup now. I edited the version text notes as he instructed but still crashin.

Anyone have any insight into that?

if you open up preferances in windlight and go to the graphics tab i'm pretty sure if you open up the personalise part you can change the slider to make av's look better.

sorry for my crappy explination but i don't have SL on this computer so can't give you the exact names of the tabs ect. but it is in there, stops your av's looking like lego at long distances

this is what i did maybe it will help you?
First make sure you have the http://s3.amazonaws.com/download-secondlife-com/Second_Life_1-18-5-3_Setup.exe installed.

Then

http://www.blueflash.cc/users/nicholaz/BleedingEdge/ (see below)

Click the Nicholas-BE-V.zip

Index of /users/nicholaz/BleedingEdge

Parent Directory
!!Installation.txt
!AboutCrashes.txt
!Changes.txt
favicon.ico
nicholaz-BE-v.zip
~previous-versions/
~source/

Unzip it into the NEWLY downloaded version of SL folder.

-- You have to manually copy over 3 Nick's .dll's and .xml files in addition to the .exe file.<<~~ the blue hand.

Keep those extra files in your Second Life folder

Then

Right-Click your desktop, select New, Shortcut and pick the nicholaz.exe file from the second life program folder via the browse button (My Computer, Drive C, Program Files, SecondLife(ReleaseCandidate), nicholaz.exe) and finish the shortcut.

Hi Jack, thanks for the response.

It looks like you're giving me the info to use the Nic viewer with the regular SL client? I have done that and use it everyday; it's awesome. = )

What I was having trouble with was patching the Windlight client rather than the regular one. :)
