I been contemplating lately what the draw of posting in forums is
Can't get into SL?

And I got my eye on you...

put it into graph form and then we'll have a real laugh. :p

I'm afraid the Truth Table for this statement would be terribly boring. But here is a nice video concerning shyness and asses.

Why?

Because I like the pics of ferrets and cats, of course! :D

And BTW does anybody ever read the old threads? Will these forums even BE archived?

I ope so: I read archives often, especially while hunting up information on some long-lost area of the grid.

1: I like to help people, where I can. In most communities that I am active in, I freely share what I have learned with others. For me, this is a way of giving back to the community for what I learned there earlier, or for the beneifits I percieve myself to receive from my association with that community. I was new once, and others freely helped me. I repay them by helping the next generation.

2: There is often something to be learned from the posts of others. No one, no matter how skilled, knows everything. Even a raw newbie may bring new insights, either from their prior knowledge and experience, or just from asking the right question, in the right way, and inspiring a discovery as others seek to answer it. Even those you may often disagree with may occasionally have a brilliant insight that you had not considered.

3: I like this community, in spite of all its faults. In spite of all the drama and flames and negative aspects, it still has much to recommend it. I want the SL virtual world to work as well as it can, for all of us. We all win if it does. So I tend to be vocal when I see problems that LL should be able to fix, or that people should at least be warned about so they don't get hurt by them.

4: Not being entirely altruistic, I realize that being seen often as an honest, helpful and knowledgable individual is beneficial to my business efforts as well. Posting here helps me to establish a positive reputation. And name recognition, in a positive light, is usually very good advertising.

I can't believe this hasn't come up yet. Many of us only come to the forums as part of our never ending quest for pie. :D

ETA: Okay, Ceera's reasons are a lot better than mine, but I still want my pie.

The reason seems pretty simple to me. Why does anyone congregate with like-minded individuals who share their interests? Why do people attend church if not to share their beliefs with others and socialize. Why do people go to clubs? The forums are the same sort of phenomenon. People have that need to be social, and it's easiest to be social with people who understand you. You can't exactly go talk to your non-SL playing friend about SL.

I read and post in the forums, for a couple reasons I guess.

Its a good way to find out about things going on in the worlds (SL and RL), and for that it's valuable.

I also like having sometimes intelligent discussions with people, and having my viewpoints challenged (and challenging theirs). It's a valuable tool for analysis and decision making, and gauging the views and attitudes of people from different social backgrounds and ideologies.

And I suppose I always like a good debate. :)

You can, at the risk of sounding totally crazy. I do sometimes like to tell the tale of the time I had a jerk for a neighbor who built an ugly black box club in my beautiful sim, which I mooned regularly and ultimately built a giant penis club in front of (which got better traffic anyway although many of my other neighbors wanted to kill me). Now that I think of it, that doesn't sound crazy at all!

Anyway, why do you do it???

I think maybe because I'm an idiot.

Good question, and one I think I'll consider. I enjoy chatting with interesting people, learning new things and maybe helping someone every now and then. On the flip side, the jerk quotient of the forums seems to have increased lately, and they aren't as much fun as they were.

OP, don't feel guilty, really.
In my experience, all the community forums tend to degenerate like this one did.
They begin like a useful resource at the service of the community, a space where to share relevant information, but as time passes they turn in a closed circle of forum-addicts, groups of friends who just show to talk in front of some spectators, enemies who use the forum like a battlefield, photo-copy-pasters, Guinness Records searchers...
Better to learn to live with it.
This forum is not so bad compared to other "old" forums I know. Some unnecessary posts but I usually find "topic related" stuff between all the novel and the off-topic material use to be funny and imaginative.

I been contemplating lately what the draw of posting in forums is-- for myself and everyone else that seems to be addicted to it. Are we just that bored? Looking for a LOL? Attention whores? Showing off our cleverness or logicz or otherwise wagging our magnificent tail feathers if not actually posting pictures of them? Winning the threadz? Seeking SL fame and fortune? Creating drama? Venting? Helping people? Making friends? Making enemies? Defining ourselves and others? Relaxing? Avoiding something else we are supposed to be doing? Whiling away the time until we can get home to a puter that's got SL capabilities? Something else I haven't thought of? What does it all mean???

And do you subscribe to Freud's "will to pleasure," Frankl's "will to meaning" or Smif's "will to LOLz"...? Maybe the "will to LOLz" is actually the end-all/be-all and the obvious climax of pleasurez and meaningz???

And BTW does anybody ever read the old threads? Will these forums even BE archived? Will they be lost in some "accidental" blip of the servers? Could the data somehow survive into the distant future, where our descendants (or perhaps an alien culture) will read these words and wonder WTH we were on about???

Anyway, why do you do it???

And stay on topic, you buggers!! Cuz I said so!! No derailing the thread for LOLz and definitely no ferret pictures or LOLcats!!!

I was gonna make this more of an epic rant, but then I decided that would be pointless.

Oh, and happy Hump Day :)

I wonder on this too... so at times I quit them for a while.

The threads I like most are ones like this about what the fu(k are we doing here.

Exactly. You can tell that to us on the forums and we just nod and understand how that sort of thing happens.

Well so far the reasons I had not thought of for posting/reading forums seem to be:

Religion, obscure myth debunking, supposed shyness, education, company, being a LOLcat stuck in a basement, reassurance of one's existence, to annoy people, to have someone listen, to say Ewwwwwwww, not being able to log in to SL due to technical difficulties, for the pics of ferrets and LOLcats, nostalgia, information, feeling of community, advertising by way of goodwill, pie, early Fridays, shared understanding of "only in SL" moments, current events, challenging people and being challenged, yams, self-doubt, guilt, thread-killing and introspection.

Did we miss anything???
