Well darn- it won't help since I do seem to have a rather healthy post count- or lack of RL.. but that's another story ;)

And Brenda- hmm- not a bad idea- think about it- if building awareness is the key issue- just having people post ur store name has to be good for something... How much do you want to be a forum bill board? ;) Just kidding- honest...

Yeah, I've been curious about people's thoughts on "signa-tisements" myself.

It seems silly for people on the forums here not to at least know what the heck it is I do. Maybe I'd feel differently if I could figure out an (affordable) way to get off page 2384967234 of in-world search results :D

Just follow Phil's lead and run 39 bots 24/7. Oh, but wait I forgot. You have ethical standards. NVM then.

they don't seem change

here is an older post of mine

/327/2a/280854/1.html#post2140252/327/2a/280854/1.html#post2140252

There is no sig on it that I can see.
But here's an old one of mine:
/327/85/252954/5.html#post1950914
It has the quote I just put in my si yesterday.

As for the advertisement in my sig it's about the only promotion I do for my business, conceived in the vague hope that someone who might like to buy the kind of clothes I sell will see the picture and decide to come to my shop.

I don't mind a brief plug for your own business in a signature it (holds "RENT A SHOP FROM ME!" sign with a cheezy grin) lets you know who another business owners are and what they do, SLURLS and links are ok, but I don't want to see like in other forums a 1/2 page 1024x1024 billboard at the bottom of peoples posts, or worse bowing to corporate sponsorship (IT'S THE CHOICE OF A NEW GENERATION!) text is fine for me as a limit.

I don't know what you're really talking about because even when I was advertising or trying to run a business here it's seemed like a waste of L, too stress producing. etc.
People buy stuff from me often are friends, sometimes someone will stumble upon my stuff.
I post images here because I enjoy sharing my artwork with others, often what I am showing is not "for sale" and no one has ever offered to buy any of my Artwork except for few friends.
As far as ethics, unethical sig would be in my opinion i.e don't shop at X or Join the KKK and kill the non-whites or I sell freebies or something against TOS.
The rest truthfully I don't care about or judge, everyone else here seems to advertise something about themselves here.
It isn't unethical for wanting to share or have others know what you're doing, thinking or creating if it isn't hurting others or yourself in my opinion.

Thank GAWD you cleared this up or it would have been perpetuated! I had ref'd you as a "she" on our SL2RL blog...

...and was about to go change it...thereby perpetuating the myth that you have boy parts in RL :p

If I really wanted to advertise my shop/sim in an unethical way, I would have put the name in my sig. Tzzzz... the nerve.

Personally I appreciate when posters include information about what they do in sl in their signature, it helps me to understand the point of view and sl experience of the writer which can help to put what they wrote into perspective. In my opinion there is a big difference between someone making a post for the sole purpose of marketing (something I find very distasteful) and someone simply including a link to their store or other enterprise in their signature. That being said, I suppose I should consider adding a signature of my own.

It's 24 hours since I removed my sig and, as expected, there is no ranking change.

The system does a crawl every 12 hours, so there have been 2 crawls since then.

I would hope that any ranking change related to sigs is simply that the sig causes interest in your product, which makes people act, and those actions affect the rankings. Of course, I have a lot of unrealized hopes. But maybe in this case it's true.

Regardless, it's a good idea to put your biz in your sig, if you'd like people to know about it. I don't, but it's not an ethical decision.

That's the only way that sigs would affect rankings.

I don't like forum signatures that advertise businesses personally. I don't use them and due to the number that were prevalent in a big obvious way a while back I choose to turn signatures off.

Is it unethical? I don't think so but it might be against the forum guidelines as there is an antiadvertising clause in there. That in itself should be enough to stop it but there does not seem to be any enforcement so it goes on.
