Yeah right.

I've watched Danielle's business go down the tubes. All down to the asset server issues every day this week. No doubt everyone else running a business in sl is experiencing exactly the same issue.

Daily issues are here. We have had issues every day for the past 8 days.

I've had stores in sl for the past 2 years, my income has steadily gotten better with each month. Being told not to buy anything for 90 minutes is not the same as 2006 when the whole world would be offline for 8 hours at a stretch. So, yes right, things are better than before. Not perfect, but better.

Once again-do NOT touch that big red button, okay? If you weren't the genius running the slnames site, I'd slap you! ;)

Um, not entirely true ..... plenty of non-premium folks rent or own land on private islands....and contribute greatly to those tiers....so you really have to look at the big picture. Paying a membership to LL doesn't necessarily mean you are putting in the most $$$.....the amount of commerce generated in world is phenominal and if you took away (even briefly) the non-paying gamers the cyber economy could potentially be hit very very hard.
And I'm a premium account holder...so this isn't some kind of defense..... this is just economic observation.... from a business stand point....you don't opt to piss off ANY of your clients/customers....regardless of what they contribute. cause word of mouth can be as damaging as wild fire. IMHO lol

To quote you... not entirely true. The non-premium folks renting don't contribute directly to tier; that tier would have to be paid by the land/island owners regardless of if it is rented or not. The renters contribute to the cash flow of the land owners, but not directly to LL.

I dont know what the actual answer is.. I just know LLs response was at best...flaccid.

That's a very good way to put it, and now I know why we still haven't seen the promised blog entry...

...the Lindens are still waiting for their shipment of Lie-agra to come in to firm up their flaccid reasoning.

How it should be done: if critical point is reached, premiums get to log in, but non-premiums don't.
We don't need to log off the non-paying users just to log premiums in! That doesn't really make any sense, and will only generate spite. If the limit were really that hard a number, (ie literally 60,000 and then the whole system crashes) you could adjust the critical login number to compensate by lowering it by the number of additional premiums expected to login based on monthly updated statistics.

Here's an idea:

When the number of people online reaches a certain critical point, only residents with paid accounts would be able to log on, and that for every resident who logs on with a paid account, there will be one non-paying resident that is automatically logged off....

It doesn't make sense that there are non-paying residents in-world right now, but I'm unable to log on....

Wow - didnt't mean to cause a shitstorm.

Let me clarify - I *don't* think I'm better than anyone who has a free account. That's something I never said nor implied.

I also realize that there are lots of people with non-premium accounts that stimulate the economy in various ways, indirectly contributing towards land tier, etc... god bless 'em!

I guess it just chaps my ass to think of the *thousands* of traffic bots online while I'm being refused a log in.....

If LL would do something about the massive number of bots that are eating resources without contributing anything back, we probably would not even have these various issues that are all pretty much capacity related. Rather than restricting logins during bad times to premium only accounts, they just need to identify and disallow the bots.

Google doesn't try to update your search results 45 times per second.

True. My point is that Linden Labs should be capable of running a scalable system. In exceptional cases that might involve preventing log ins past a certain number, rather than allowing the system to get so overloaded it falls over in a heap.

Maybe charging a one-off fee for alts, like they used to, might help. People are less likely to register 1000 camping bots if they had to pay 10 real dollars a shot for them.

Hi Nyles, just want to tell you and to the other premium members that your idea has no sense, I'm not a premium and I buy 30 USD of L$ per month, 30 USD that goes directly to LL as all premium fees and 30 USD that helps to increase in-world economy. LL is for everyone, a premium today might turn into a non-premium tomorrow or vice versa :)
