ooo lelia, I may just check that road out. I'm sure that they are everywhere but i have never come across one. I may just explore SL using your place as a starting point lol. Wow...I'm getting excited over a road o_O... lol
Graph that would be fun. I have never seen a car, thinking about it, I have never seen any vehicle at all! I certainly have never rezzed any of the freebie ones that I have. Wow, I must miss loads of stuff! Either that or i am seriously ignorant!

You can also come to my Vehicle Rez Area. I have Rolls Coupe set out. It doesn't drive too good (lol), but it's a freebie (right-click and take copy). When driving it, for best results, go slow and easy. The others are ones I paid for and just have sitting there. Also, there's a little car dealer ship to the south a little bit. I haven't bought one from there so I can't comment on their quality.

Most don't look like roads, Claire, just vacant spaces not developed into a road yet. If you look at the map while on the mainland you'll frequently see clusters of yellow spaces for sale with an open area in between that runs the length of the sim. That's the easiest way to spot one.

From: Ianthe Kline Well not a HUGE support for the idea so far - but hey I just realise that I posted the suggestion at a time when all the europeans are in bed and mostly the Americans online... not casting nasturtiums but maybe converting roads into parks is a kinda European idea and a bit un-American? I guess you've never met a Californian before?

roads don't really much 'mean anything' in tp-able sl... however as a sort of 3d-ish 'classical crossover', i like that they and other public works/areas exist. i do like to occassionally boat thru what open areas i can; i imagine land racers like to do the same.

From: Ianthe Kline Anyway they are EMPTY for goodness sake! If you want to get anywhere you TP or fly. When I explore I don't fly or TP. It kind of ruins the experience. So I walk or use my bicycle, jetski or hangglider. The reason why roads and rivers are empty is the fact that using a vehicle is such a mess! Sim borders crash you, full parcels orbit you, banlines make you stuck... Too bad SL is not more vehicle friendly.

Anyway they are EMPTY for goodness sake! If you want to get anywhere you TP or fly. Even TP to the next room and fly to the next floor. In time all SL avatars will evolve away from having legs. We already evolved away from wheels. They are gone, finshed, dead.
Lets line the roads with trees, that solves the ad problem in another thread. Lovely for the walkers. Reserve a few special ones for the vroom-vroom crowd - everybody's happy, no?
Let's hear it from Europe! (And Korea, of course. Seoul is the greatest). Errr I'm from New Zealand and I said no, so it's not just the Americans who want their roads. I enjoy taking my dog for a walk, or going for a sightseeing trip in my pony drawn buggy. (nice and slow scenic ride). It's just a pity the road running past my place is still a dirt track

If you are wearing your "vehicle" you won't have any problems with sim crossings. That means a bicycle, horse or skates. I know of no other finer way to travel.
There is a nice cobblestone road behind my house in Griffin that I frequently use. Actually now that I think of it roads are also nice as a helicopter path as you can fly along them and not get stuck in the ban lines that so many people seem to enjoy having.

I love roads. They keep everything from becoming a mish-mash of buildings all clomped together, half of them with ban-lines.
I have a road in front of my shop in Rosieri, and yes, people do go down it. A friend of mine likes to rez a vehicle - a school bus, a metro bus, etc. - and take a few of us on little trips down that road. The only thing that happens is every time we cross a border, we drive into and under the ground for a bit before popping up.
In Asure Islands, I have streets on two sides of my house, and frequently walk down them, or see others walking down them. Last night there was a guy on a horse going along them!
It's more like a neighborhood to have the streets there.

Still I wonder what would have happened if I had originally suggested turning the SL parks into roads instead....
Anyway it now seems to me that it is absolutely essential to have a network of continous rights of way in SL that cannot be built on or banned. It helps the feeling of physical space and 'place' - I don't know why I didnt see that.
(BUT, mutters, no reason for them to look like tarmac and white and yellow lines. Could be prettier... and all that nonsence about cars, oughta go to fairground and sit in dodgems, mutter mutter, I'm going out for a walk, mutter, trails off into the distance down the road.......
(...met a man walks into an SL pub and sits down. Large square of tarmac covered with dotted lines and cats eyes comes in and sits next to him... HI There! Hi! Hey barman says the man - I'll have a double scotch. And one for the road...)

From: Claire Silverspar I have never even seen a SL road, never mind walked or driven down one - though i am sure i have a vehicle or two somewhere in my inventory... I tend to just TP. Maybe I should start walking more. The roads I've seen (and enjoy) are generally in planned communities - Galveston Island and areas of the Caledon sims come to mind. Or really anyplace that simulates a city - London, Greenwich Village, NYC, Nerdagara Falls, areas around Metronome Jazz dance ballroom in San Fran, etc. One of the first sims I visited when I was new to SL was Galveston Island and loved the trolley system where one rides to each location rather than a tp platform. Keep the roads

From: Tegg Bode If they made them parks then they would just sell them as landplots eventually, Roads are good, because they bring order to the chaos, you can tell where the front of a shop / house is. One day vehicles will work again and they will become popular once more. Meanwhile.........Blantant plug follows..................... if you like driving (depite the state f the roads), I have a 113 prim public vehicle rezzing platform on my land next to a Y intersection in Andraca, this will cost you only $1L to use for 3 hours access + BOT (Benevolant Overlord Tax) of $4L. I don't think 2 cents US is unreasonable for temporary usage of my land There is a 1 minute return time to prevent ckutter. http://slurl.com/secondlife/Andraca/113/226/38Andraca links to all the roads on the first old continent and I only know of one other place on this continent you can rezz a vehicle. Tegg, how do I do this? I split off a parcel, and activated Buy Pass for it...but then it wouldn't let me in, even though I was the owner. I want a parcel that will let me and my group members enter, but require a pass from outsiders.

Roads can be fun for flying, too. I like taking my Huey a few feet above the road and following it along at high speed.

I think it takes a bit to update, because I had that problem initially, now my group members can walk in ok. You can always buy a pass, the money comes back to you anyway

From: Monalisa Robbiani I like them but to make them into usable roads they should allow scripts and rezzing for 1 minute. Roads without vehicles are nice but they are not roads. The same applies to rivers. Damn straight...I love riding my motorcycle all around SL, but you can hardly rez anywhere. *shrug* The thing that really bugs ME about roads right now is how prim roads are acting in BETA, which I'm hoping gets fixed soon... ...slows the vehicle down by about 75% or something. Avs could run past you, lol ...of course given the fact that with cross-Sim-lag, we can barely stay above ground, this is always a pretty funny topic to even mention. We can barely even call these things roads anymore

From: Susie Boffin If you are wearing your "vehicle" you won't have any problems with sim crossings. That means a bicycle, horse or skates. "Vehicle" always means a scripted object that has to be rezzed and sat upon. Otherwise it's an attachment with an AO (and just cosmetics). My bicycle for example is a real vehicle.

My bicycle for example is a real vehicle. I guess I object to the "just cosmetics" label for attachments. Granted, they're severely handicapped, not having the very special connection to Havok that's granted to vehicles, but still one can do a lot of fun physics in an attachment. It's just a lot more scripting, and only practical for things that just don't fit the vehicle model.

I live on a bend on a mainland "finished" road, and even though I don't myself drive, I love it! I like: 1) the sense of real geography the roads and waterways bring 2) going for a run across several sims 3) (this might sound a bit cruel ...) The road crosses a sim border right next to my property and it is one of my favourite spectator sports to sit under my tree watching vehicles roar along then disappear underground in a hail of expletives. I am thinking of putting up a few little roadside shrines to commemorate the most unfortunate victims. Oh yes and I am from a very built up area of the UK ... thinking about it, if the sl roads were as busy, smelly and noisy as the rl roads near me I would hate them. For those wanting somewhere to rez a vehicle and drive away, I can recommend NCI Kuula, where they have a ramp from their sandbox onto a very extensive finished road network: http://slurl.com/secondlife/Kuula/54/175/29/

From: Soen Eber In Larry Niven's "Tales of Known Space", once teleportation booths and jump disks become universal freeways are turned into linear parks. Seems like a nice idea, really.
Back to reality, people are hoping that the Havoc upgrade will make the roads more usable. when is the havoc upgrade happenning?
