Are all the SL roads going to be turned into parks?

And if not, why not? They are completely empty and useless and rather ugly. Why not full of trees and lakes and bands? I nominate this as the best idea for 2008. Who's in favour?

Not me, I want my road, but yes the state of the roads is terrible.

Someone should fire the roading authority, they are obvious spending all the money on parties instead of getting out and fixing the failing roads.

I'm not in favor of that. There is nothing wrong with an empty road and they are far from useless as I like to ride my bicycle on them with without having to dodge ban lines and other such nonsense.

In Larry Niven's "Tales of Known Space", once teleportation booths and jump disks become universal freeways are turned into linear parks. Seems like a nice idea, really.

Back to reality, people are hoping that the Havoc upgrade will make the roads more usable.

I like them but to make them into usable roads they should allow scripts and rezzing for 1 minute. Roads without vehicles are nice but they are not roads. The same applies to rivers.

They could be made of green asphalt.

Small scripted animals could be added scampering about.

For those on foot the grassy looking asphalt and scripted animals could be viewed as a nature scene.

For those in cars the green asphalt would just be some weird asphalt and the scampering animals could be targets.

I doubt the planners for SL thought that the roads would turn into ad farms and wasted space. But what good are they, since every time we cross a sim border, all hell breaks loose?

But what good are they

What good are they? For the lovely few as one takes their morning stroll, of course. Reading the ad farms as one passes during the sunrise is far more enjoyable than the daily paper.

I'm for keeping the roads, but actually making them roads.

I doubt they will ever be parks, considering LL hasnt even finished with the roads! Besides, there are more resident owned parks than resident owned roads, and roads can actually be pretty durned useful.

Well, they do need to finish the roads IMHO. Too many unfinished roads have a rough texture that would result in a bumpy ride.

And Havok 4 will fix all that other stuff :))

If they made them parks then they would just sell them as landplots eventually,
Roads are good, because they bring order to the chaos, you can tell where the front of a shop / house is. One day vehicles will work again and they will become popular once more.
Meanwhile.........Blantant plug follows..................... if you like driving (depite the state f the roads), I have a 113 prim public vehicle rezzing platform on my land next to a Y intersection in Andraca, this will cost you only $1L to use for 3 hours access + BOT (Benevolant Overlord Tax) of $4L. I don't think 2 cents US is unreasonable for temporary usage of my land :)There is a 1 minute return time to prevent ckutter.

Andraca links to all the roads on the first old continent and I only know of one other place on this continent you can rezz a vehicle.

Well not a HUGE support for the idea so far - but hey I just realise that I posted the suggestion at a time when all the europeans are in bed and mostly the Americans online... not casting nasturtiums but maybe converting roads into parks is a kinda European idea and a bit un-American?

Anyway they are EMPTY for goodness sake! If you want to get anywhere you TP or fly. Even TP to the next room and fly to the next floor. In time all SL avatars will evolve away from having legs. We already evolved away from wheels. They are gone, finshed, dead.

Lets line the roads with trees, that solves the ad problem in another thread. Lovely for the walkers. Reserve a few special ones for the vroom-vroom crowd - everybody's happy, no?

Let's hear it from Europe! (And Korea, of course. Seoul is the greatest).

Roads are not always empty - I regularly see traffic passing by my place in Bodega. However, at the moment roads are more fun for me for skating and bicycling. In the future - when vehicles work better - roads will be more important.

SL isn't RL and the roads in SL aren't meant for easy transportation from place to place.
They're there for entertainment & immersion purposes.
Together with the waterways and the spare railroads, they form the spare elements in SL which transcend sim borders. Effectively allowing those inclined to do so, to experience SL as one contiguous space, a world, instead of a jumbled up mass of disjointed locations.

The main reason they're hardly used that way, is because atm, the technical implementation of SL (the havok 1 physics engine limitations, the sim-sim crossing issues, the fact you constantly need to reload content when travelling, the amount of lagginsg sims on your journey) makes traveling in vehicles down the roads more of a challenge of keeping your vehicle on the road, than a relaxing and enjoyable experience.

Does this mean we should give up on them, and just scratch the whole concept of one contiguous world to travel through, enjoy and experience? I'd rather keep them, and hope LL in the long run fixes the technical problems (which aren't limited to driving, driving just makes you experience the brunt of them at the same time).

I realize things haven't improved much in the last 4 years in that respect. But LL is 'working on it'. For now I'll keep hoping.

I quite like roaming the unmade sections of Linden Highway - My home adjoins such a piece of protected land. But I would be quite happy to see a road built on it. I know that vehicles are of limited use at present because of sim border crashes etc. but that won't neccessarily be the case for ever.

I think it's a pity there weren't more protected routes on mainland, even if some of them were only narrow footpaths.

I was aimlessly walking down a road last week, and a car shot past me, I jumped out of my skin and it was exhilarating. Then at the same time I saw a helicopter crash, smoke blowing out of the tail all the effects. When I got to it the four people in it hadn't been aware the copter could crashed, they were laughing and a bit dazed at the same time, then a snowplough came down the road and bulldozed the helicopter of the road, by then I had TP'd some friends to see the action.

For all that, even though it was a one time event, it makes the roads very important imo.

I drive on the roads all the time. And if you get the right type of vehicle, you don't have a sim crossing problem.

You bounce a lot when you cross, but . . .

I normally find land, any land, that allows building. Then I get myself to the road however I can. If there are ban lines and the like, I "fly" over to it. I actually wandered some connected islands the other day in my car (not the wheel thing in the other picture) by editing it through one sim and into another. One sim allowed build, the other did not. Closed the edit window, and roared off in a no build island. :) Oh, and I moved by edit because the land was at two different levels not conducive to driving. And couldn't figure out how to fly in that specific car.

Here I am randomly driving on a no build island:

They could be made of green asphalt.
A pretty good compromise, IMHO. A big problem with a lot of the unpaved roadways is that the sim-builders seem to have terraformed the roadway to maximum roughness, so instead of being multi-use, they're pretty much no-use. (Well, you can fly along them with or without a vehicle, but a walk is one stumble after another--as parks, they make fairly hostile environments.)

I have never even seen a SL road, never mind walked or driven down one - though i am sure i have a vehicle or two somewhere in my inventory...
I tend to just TP. Maybe I should start walking more.

I love the roads! I have my SL house that is on a parcel next to a road, and often go driving or play on bumper cars - sometimes even just fly. Its fun to be out working in my SL yard, and see a car whiz by ... the road in front of my house is definitely used.

For any who have never seen a road before, Look up my name, Lelia Wakawaka, in the search area, and teleport to my "Home Sweet Home" ... Unfortunately, you can't rez a vehicle on my property - griefers have kept me from allowing that (and the lack of prims, hehe). However, there is a store next to me - I don't know if he has rezzing available or not - AND ... there is a very cool car dealership across the road from me also for those of you who need a great vehicle!
