No wonder they're messed up: the 286 could only address 16MB of RAM.

The other 8MB was paged EMS.

Surely you must know that everything Linden Labs puts their name on is broken. Pretty soon people will start calling the Global Economic Collapse a 'Lindenism'.

if you want to get technical it was broken, then they turned features off to prevent access to broken parts, much the same as never turning right in a car because it's wheel will fall off if you do equals turning right is broken. it may not be the source of the problem but it's still the cause of the nerfed functionality. fixing it allows the return of that functionality.

but like I said before, even LL says it's broken.

who or what exactly are you defend here? the semantics are pointless; especially given the focus of the OPs post was that LL promised and didn't deliver, regardless of the language used by either
If you *really* want to get technical, it wasn't broken. Options were turned off to close an exploit, as I understand it, which means it wasn't broken. And if you really don't want to argue semantics, why are you doing it?

But wouldn't the exploit suggest that something deep down in the code was broken, and that disabling vB code was the workaround for this broken code?

Just a practical suggestion: I've tried to steer 'newbies' toward the SL forums and always hear "it's too complicated; I just want to dive in. I don't want to read a lot."

Okay so maybe that's the question AND the answer and there isn't much cure for that aside from will. But, *maybe* if the forums were easier to navigate to/find from the main secondlife.com page? Let's say 'community' was in red or something.

(Or, for those who aren't going to get that that 'community' means forums - perhaps English isn't their first language for instance - perhaps even put "forums" or even "Questions and Answers forum" or "Newbies read here" Lol, easy to spot on the main page? Big bright lettering? It's a pop tart society, kwim?)

And if the outdated stickies were weeded a bit quicker? I still see some from December.

Ahh, I see. Allowing an exploit isn't a bug, it's a *feature* ! :)
I'd lose my job in a heartbeat if I took that position.

OK, we're agreed. Code that allows an exploit has a bug, i.e., it's broken.

Glad we got that cleared up! :D

Perhaps the term you're looking for is "Broken As Designed"?

Design flaws are worse than bugs. You can usually fix bugs without breaking anything else. Fixing design flaws involves fixing everything that uses the broken design.

<satire> Brilliant rhetoric, Phil. Very convincing. </satire>

The forum software has an exploit when used as intended, thus it's broken. Important features have been disabled due to this flaw. Yes, important features. Far better to have the forum with these features turned off, than to lose it altogether, so good for LL for disabling the features *temporarily while fixing the flaw*. Two years doesn't seem very temporary in this context.

I'm a big defender of LL when people come on these forums and act like SL is trivial and any idiot's little brother could do better with some duct tape and bailing wire, so LL must be totally incompetent. I'm not calling them incompetent. I'm just annoyed that they've let this problem go on for so long, interfering with our ability to communicate in our posts on this forum.

It's the last part of that sentence that I disagree with. Something can be done with it that wasn't intended to be done, but that doesn't mean that it's broken. It just means that there was an oversight, but it still works exactly as intended. If something is broken, it, or part of it, can't be used as intended. In this case everything can be used as it was designed to be used. Unfortunately, it can be used for a little bit more than that.

Internet Explorer is broken as designed. That doesn't mean it can't be used as intended.

Back to the original topic, and referencing Qie's "babby" thread:

LL, please do NOT fix the forums. Hands off. Leave it alone. Don't mess with it. No user serviceable parts inside. Warranty void if opened.

Bad as it is, crippled as you've made it, ignored and unregulated...these forums as they stand this moment are (I predict with complete confidence) eight times better than anything you could possibly do to "improve" them.

Go fix SL. Shoo!

Now they are going to fix it [IE] and then the web will be broken. (Or so I read somewhere)

They're not going to do a damn thing about the worst design flaws, the security model that assumes it's safe to run untrusted code on your local machine. They're just fixing some of the minor ones in the display code.
