From: Conan Godwin Was it an obvious scam that anyone with eyes could see was a scam from the start?
If so then I concede defeat, having enjoyed my moment in the sun. Obviously I saw it as a scam, hence using the term...... What do they say about Mad Dogs and Englishmen out in the sun.....was it that Sun Tzu guy?

I personally can't stand it when people use the nouns "impact" and "obsession" and turn them into verbs: "The foreclosure impacted our bottom line negatively." or "She's obsessing over that guy." ARGH.

From: Conan Godwin Okay, I've found a few examples of people using Ginko'd or ginkoed as a verb before me. However, they all seem to be a more general context of "having something unpleasant happen". I need a solid example of someone using it specifically to mean being scammed by an OBVIOUS scam. It's very important that this be part of the definition of the verb - that the scam in question was obvious to everyone else who didn't take part right from the start. Hence the original meaning of the word: "Ginko (verb): to give money to someone else, hoping that they are lying when they say they cannot guarantee your principle or interest; to let one's common sense be clouded by desire for reward." It's hard to call something a "scam" and at the same time call it "obvious." Ginko was either a scam because to many people it seemed like a legitimate effort at banking--AND STILL DOES ("if only he'd had time to realize the profits on his long-term investments" --or it was no scandal at all, because people knew all along what was going on. As popular as it is to nod and say "ponzi," I would like to point out that there is still no proof of this, nor is there likely to be (even if it truly was a ponzi scheme). People are accepting the proof substitutes now that Ginko was a ponzi scheme, just as people accepted proof substitutes before that it was a good place in which to invest money. One can't decry Ginko for being "unregulated," "opaque," "nondisclosed," "unaccountable," etc. then turn right around and claim something that requires knowledge of the books.

From: Alyx Sands You might also be a Celt! Manx is a fascinating topic too..... ...and I'm very much into language history, and if I don't stop NOW, I'll never go to bed today. It's almost five in the morning here.... I speak none of the language, but do own some Laxey tartan that I am going to have made into a kilt. The Celts, as you should know, didn't exist in the context of being a single race and/or culture. Although it may be acceptable to define a number of different cultures as being "celtic". I believe the word derives from the Greek "keltoi" - which, as far as I remember, was their name for a specific tribe from South-West Germany. Correct me if this is wrong. However, other names appear to be related. Could the Welsh name for themselves (the Cymri), the area of North Eastern England known as Cumbria, and the troublesome Cimbri who caused Julius Caesar such problems be related somehow? I suspect so. Also, a Celt, or Kelt, is a type of neolithic stone axe. Lord Avebury, in his seminal work "Prehistoric Times" preferred the 'C' spelling. The Manx are mixed Norse and Irish blood mostly, hence the preponderence for names like "Thorfinn" traditionally all over the island - and one of Odin's ravens appearing on the Manx coat of arms. My own real life surname is the Manx rendering of the Irish name MacCauly.

Actually One can. One just cant PROVE it. and some other one may not LIKE it. But One can do a lot of claiming - becuase unlike in court - one doesnt need absolute PROOF to voice one's opinion. As for this particular One. I call it like I see it - PONZI If Nick dont like it - he give the people information about what he did with their money and shut me up.

LOL... the image of you standing there hanging on to the railing while air was being sucked past you made me think of whichever Star Wars that was where DV cut off Luke's hand and they were out on that totally pointless spire thing in the middle of that totally pointless tunnel through the ship thingy and DV told Luke that he was Luke's father.

From: Oryx Tempel Yup. Bad hack job, too. I'm going to submit a JIRA that on this Forum, next to the "View Firs Unread Post" button, we have a "View First Relevant Post" button. I think it's the responsible thing to do.

From: Conan Godwin Turning nouns into verbs is what we British do best.
Now excuse me while I go off computering elsewhere. Trouble with that, though, is that verbing nouns weirds language.

It's just something I remembered...a have a lot of weird linguist facts stowing away in my head to reappear at moments like these I guess... @Conan: Oh, I do know about "the" Celts. I lived in Wales and learnt some Welsh there. Cumbria IS related to Cymru...and hey, the Saxons were also called after their fave weapon, a knife called a seax, or sax, but then they were Germanic to begin with. Where I come from, we had the tribe of the Mattiaci, and they were kind of mixed Celtic-Germanic (AND brown-nosing the Romans!)
