A few more newbie questions

I have a few more small newbie questions:

1: How do you get to the main help island? A mentor told me I couldn't go to the newbie one again once I left but that I could go to the main one. Also. how do I see a basic map of the world if there is such a thing, or is everything divided into sections that you go to via event, etc search?

2: How do you use the search to find cheap items if that's possible. I tried using it, but it just gave random garage sales, etc. Nothing said the price of the items for sale however. I do see some free stuff you can get, which brings me to my next question-

3: Is there a limit to the freebies you can own? Like every day can you only get so many?

4: Where can you walk around with a pet behind you without lagging the game? I hear pets cause lag so they are frowned upon in many areas and might get you banned? :( I saw this free dragon in the store link the mentor gave me and I really wanted it, but was afraid to get it. :/

5: Finally, I realize this is a international game, however I am not bilingual in any languages, so I want to hang out with people that mainly speak English. (All the people that were in the shop I was in were speaking something else. :/) Where are the main English communities (PG-PG13 if that's a rating :/) and games (violence and blood is okay) please?

Sorry that there are so many questions, but I just got into the main world and I feel like i'm lost lol. n.n;

I dont think you can get back to Help Island. Best not to anyway. It is full of newbies and you are now one of us. Welcome to sl (and dont listen to what anyone tell you about me unless it is a compliment)!

In Search, type "help island public", and you will get a link to the mainland version of Help Island.

2: How do you use the search to find cheap items if that's possible. I tried using it, but it just gave random garage sales, etc. Nothing said the price of the items for sale however. I do see some free stuff you can get, which brings me to my next question-

Yadni's Junkyard is a good starting place. Also go to The Shelter and to New Citizen's Institute, and they can help you find starter stuff.

3: Is there a limit to the freebies you can own? Like every day can you only get so many?

No limit.

4: Where can you walk around with a pet behind you without lagging the game? I hear pets cause lag so they are frowned upon in many areas and might get you banned? :( I saw this free dragon in the store link the mentor gave me and I really wanted it, but was afraid to get it. :/

Depends on the Pet. Any scripted gadget, from a watch to a poodle dog to a hummingbord that follows you around will caue some lag. Heck, prim hair causes lag... Get the Pet, and if they complain, say "Oh? OK." and take it back into inventory. Most places won't ban you before asking politely for the lag inducing thing to be put away.

Animania, Skynx (67, 85, 23) has birds and other things that follow you, and that are fairly low prim because they use sculpties. They have a hummingbird that is really cute.

Just about anywhere you go, you'll run into some non-English speakers. Don't let it bug you. There are translator HUD's that you can get that will act sort of like Babelfish, for your typed chat. They are not perfect, but they are better than shaking your head sadluy and walking away because you can't comprehend what they are saying.

What language people are speaking varies with time of day, as well, since different parts of the world are awake and having free time at diffeent times of day.

I doubt I can answer all of your questions, but though I'd try to help with what I could.

First, I don't know about the main help island. You can check your landmarks in your inventory and see if you can teleport to the help island landmark you should have been given from orientation island. Your mentor should know the answers to these questions as well, I would think.
Second, as for using the search.....you can use it to find things your interested in and then go take a look at their stores. Just teleport, the link is in there. If your looking for freebies, just search for freebies and read through the adds. Visit places to get your items. I don't believe there is a limit, but I also didn't load up on freebies either when I first entered.
I don't know anything about pets and lag, but I don't doubt it. I do however, doubt that a private sim owner is going to ban you for having a pet, they may ask you to either put the pet away or leave. Who knows, some might. I wouldn't worry too much about it though. Just make sure your read sim rules and follow them to be respectful of the owners and other people that visit.
On to your last question, I don't know that there is any land that is restricted by any race or language people only. There are sim owners that might have a majority of their visitors that speak the same language, but certainly not restricted to, at least not in my experience. My suggestion is just explore and you will start finding places that you enjoy more than others.
If I can help out in any way, feel free to IM me in world. I'm not a mentor, but if I can help, I will do so anytime! :D

1. Open your inventory. Open the "Library" folder. Open "Landmarks" under the library and double click the landmark there.
Also, click the map button on the bottom of your screen just right of center to open the map (such that it is).

2. You can not search for the price of things. Search in SL is just to find things of interest. However, there are at least two web-sites that are used by many SL stores with capabilities you are wanting. On-res and SLExchange (google for a link).

3. No limit

4. As a rule of thumb, the buier an area is the more you need to watch out and avoid adding any more lag. Most residential areas only have 3 to 5 people there aty a time. Fell free to play with your pet or show him off to your friends.

5. SL is mostly english speaking. Almost any place will do. Time of day is more of a factor than place, usually.

Alright, thanks a lot everyone. Your info helped me out immensely!
I also keep getting this on the site and need to refresh multiple times to get the forums:

503 Service Unavailable

The service is not available. Please try again later.

So it takes me a long time to post or reply. Any idea why this keeps happening to me or is it something with the site? Thanks again.

LL is having a rash of problems with a lot of the web services, among other things. We are all getting the 503 error from time to time.

Search 'Elf Circle' in Places, teleport there and wander around all the surrounding sims. It is a pg area, and not only newbie, but also a pet friendly place, lol.

(1-5 already got answered so not going to do that again :))

Addition on 4: If it's the kind of pet you have to rez and you want to use it in public areas (not your own land), then you might end up dissapointed since lots of places will have build turned off (you can't rez it), object entry turned on (the pet can't follow you onto the parcel) or scripts turned off (it will stop working unless you're/it's above 50m).

It also won't follow you across tp's (you'd have to take it, then rerez when you arrive), which includes logging off somewhere and logging back on elsewhere.

None of the above limitations should keep you from buying it if you really want it, it's just meant to set realistic expectations.

If it's the kind of pet that you wear as an attachment, none of the above limitations apply but then it's not really a "follow" pet.

Okay *whew* glad it's not just me. That sounds like a cool place. I'll try there. I hope there's still some dragons available, the hummingbird sounds nice too though.

I'm going for a little while now, but i'm coming back later to go in-world. :)

Try the "Shelter'

I think Travis basically designed the place for something for new people to do (and its not sexually themed at all)

And its been running well over 2 years - so Id say its worth a try.

When you visit NCI, hunt down the big blue maps on the wall, which show the outline and highlights of the Mainland continents. Although private islands make up 80% of the SL landmass now, exploring the Mainland gives a kind of glimpse at the scale of this thing you've gotten yourself into.

And, *welcome*. (Ah, to be a newbie again...) Have fun! :)

Hi Shandree! Welcome to SL!

Regarding maps, like Qie said, NCI has a lot of maps, courtesy of Carl Metropolitan, who has painstakingly researched this Stuff. I'll send you one as a texture inworld.

Regarding your Inventory: As far as I know there is no limit to the number of items you can have, regardless of their status as Freebies or not. You'll collect a gajillion Freebies at first, then weed out, or give away, the stuff that you don't want anymore.

Regarding Life In General: Spend more time having fun and enjoying and making friends than worrying about buying land, making money, etc. These may or may not come later, depending on your inclination. Lots of people use SL as a business, lots use it as a plaything, and lots use it as a combination. Don't ever feel like you need to fit into any certain role. It's your life and your imagination. :)

Hi Shandree

As a recent shedder of my noob status, my best advice would be to find somebody to help guide you around the world. Probably from this Forum.

I had several MEGA helpful people from this Forum meet up with me in free stuff shops who got me kitted out with a skin and hair and stuff (oh yeah and clothes!) and then they took me to places where there was other people and music and so on and so on.

I was very overwhelmed by how much there was to do at first that I found myself doing nothing until I was pointed in the right direction.

I went to Enkythings when I was new and got scared because everybody seemed to speak in a foreign tongue - lots of good cheap stuff there though. And Free Dove too.

Somebody from this forum actually gave me some Linden Dollars too to help me get started, I wont embarrass them by naming them (I say 'gave' but maybe it was a Loan! I dont remember discussing repayment terms though lol).

All the people who have posted will be happy to help and numerous more who havent posted too. Just send us a message in-world and somebody will come to your aid!!

And check out the Live Music - its aces

Sandy

Yeah, we´re actually quite helpful around here :D

I´d have to say that getting a little guidance around the world in the beginning can make a HUGE difference. And I´m sure a lot of people from the foum will be quite willing to provide some assistance in that respect.

That´s my line!!!!! :p

If you fancy checking out live music in SL, which I recommend as both great fun in itself and a great way to socialise, shoot me an IM. I've got a couple of notecards with some info and tips.

Most importantly, take it easy, don't rush into anything and have fun!

I third the Live music recommendations. Brilliant fun and the people who go generally are a laugh a minute.
I'm wounded that I haven't managed to get to one in a while.
