Surely this privacy camming in thingy, has been done to death in numerous other threads. I personally don't give a monkeys who sees me, or who I see 'naked'. If anyone does care then SL really isn't the place for them to get frisky, because with no privacy you might as well advertise the event.

Assume everything you do in SL is watched by somebody. Even off-grid totally private sims be accessed by a Linden. Anything that has to be transmitted over the tubes is not private, including voice and video.

My pixels
12-29-2009 12:51
My pixels represent my personal choices and the actions that I want to take with someone. They can be used to depict an intimate moment with someone; an intention if you like or an expression.

That we are separated by our jobs does not mean that we love each other any less or that what we do is any less meaningful.
Are the thoughts expressed any less valid or the emotions inspired any less real because of the method of expressing them?

Go on, lie to yourselves all you like or enclose yourself in an envelope of, "This is just a game," if you want.

It was a joke, Johan. One would think that bringing Stan Freberg into the premise would make that obvious, but perhaps only the old folks in the crowd would get the reference.

ETA: Just to clarify, the part about being able to cam away from the "Show look at" crosshairs was not a joke. If there is anyone within 3-4 sims of you, it is simply not possible to be sure you are not being watched.

Oh, have no clue who Stan Feber is, and btw, I am one of the old folks, both in RL (45) and SL (3+ which is considered older, if anything, when it comes to SL ages).

That goes for text chat only. No idea how it is in the normal viewer, but in Emerald you can choose to hear voice chat based on camera position. And yes, that does work.

That's a standard feature.

You're not having much fun.....are you?

Still here after 3 plus years... so I must be. A far cry from the vast majority of people who have tried SL and left it after a few hours or days. I work alot in SL, and I play too. I explore, meet new people, socialize, teach, build, script, and more. Since getting involved with SL I've become very proficient at Photoshop, and now, in recent weeks, Blender as well as I'm begining to get proficient at making sculpted prims. SL has taught me object oriented programming which I've since leaned Flash because of it. I run a small biz, and earn enough money in world so that I don't have to pull RL money out of my pocket to participate.

pardon me....but some of us do treat a mental connection as real.

But we can also distinguish the Internet from a living room in a private home in RL. And also distinguish a pixel body from real flesh. You might want to consider where the "lying" kicks in.

I was talking about a different kind of fun. :) It sounded as if you were opposed to that. Particularly in your choice of words.

Example:
I might not care for the above type of fun that you are having. So I might suggest that you might be a pathetic, selfish, greedy, scum-sucking, capitalist pig. Sort of like that. Just because you have a different kind of fun. How is that workin' for ya in SL?

That isn't you. You are the person at the keyboard. Anyone camming your avatar is only seeing pixels, not you.

Could you try to remember where you read that? If some jackass with a blog said it, it's one thing. If LL officially said so, it's quite another.

In either case, if camming were taken out of the viewer, *building* would be more difficult.

Not everything in SL is about sex.

Gee, it's been like 3 years since I read that. I was official LL though. I honestly can't remember exactly where I read it, but it was basically saying that the ability to cam around like that was left that way (clipping could be done for cameras if so deisred, there's no technical issue.

Besides...

If one truly want's privacy in SL it's more than completely possible. Ways to do it:

1. Put your build up 3000-4000 meters up, alot of people aren't going to bother flying up that high to peep. I generally have my platform up in that region because it's generally low lag, and virtually no one ever comes around. Even if they're caming in from afar, I'm usually building or just sitting there because I'm on a web page, or in Photoshop or Blender, so it would be pretty boring.

2. Buy your own sim. Buying your own sim gives you the ability to prevent entry from anyone other than those you have on an access list, and, you can set it up when you buy it (or at any time for that matter), so that it's not visible from any other sim, even one right next to it. From the other sim, all they'd see is water. In that case you're 100 percent in the clear from anyone possibly having the ability to cam in or spy on you (sans a Linden, but trust me, Lindens are far too busy doing their job to bother risking their employment to watch a couple of cartoons do the bump & grind).

3. Download openSim. Want 100 percent plus privacy? Download openSim and setup your own grid. It's entirely possible to setup a grid on your own PC, and have a region or two completely to yourself. That wold give you 100 percent complete security, not even a Linden could spy on you.

I never ever claimed it was just a game or that the emotions were not real or that the people at the keyboards were not real. Everything I ever type in Chat or IM is always the truth. But that does not mean that it bothers me too awful much if someone is peeping at my avatar. If someone was listening in on my chat/IMs then I would be upset (yes, I know the Lindens can). Just my view of the SL world -- biggest reason being I choose not to sweat the little things that I cannot change. To each their own.

From my chair, being a peeping Tom in SL has to be about the most pathetic thing in the world. I mean, c'mon, I'd have more respect for someone being a peeping Tom in RL than I would for one in SL. LOL.

I suppose everyone's curious about the sex end of SL at one point or another, but I got pretty bored with it within a week or so. If that all there was to SL I would have left a long time ago. Building, scripting, running a biz, etc is what I've found to be more interesting than watching two cartoons go at it.

This topic always makes me think of this quote. I think the people who seriously are "into" peeping other naked avatars on the sly, must be like this:

You're right that many people identify closely with their avatars, and privacy is an understandable desire. You're wrong to assume that everyone is like this and that those who say they're not are lying.

Just to clarify: it's technically feasible to make privacy boxes, but it would require adding a feature to SL servers. Without adding this new feature to the SL servers, it's not possible to enforce privacy.

When I am not sleep deprived, there are words that are used with a meaning, such as "or."

Some people are just curious about what others are up to and might cam as discretely as possible. Others might like being watched on occasion by invitation only.
