How to tell if you are being "cammed"

I am not sure what the phase is, but ill call it "cammed" lol

You know we can all look out long distances with our cams/view? is there a way to see if someone is looking at you from far away?

Well, I think this gets used a fair bit by dancers and strippers trying to zero on spectators in the crowd. And I suspect it is used in clubs by casual visitors for similar, yet slightly different reasons . . .

A more serious use of it is to detect stalkers. Such do exist in SL, and I know of at least two cases of women who were stalked by former lovers who cammed on them from out of sight.

If this is a serious concern, then you might want to consider using the Emerald Viewer. The standard viewer shows cross hairs, but doesn't give the associated names of the avatars watching you, while the Emerald does. I think there is a way of blocking your name from appearing, but I haven't checked that option out, and I suspect that anyone who is not a serious griefer wouldn't bother in any case.

Just FYI, the "Show look at" feature shows where a camera's original focus was. I tested it out once with my own av, and I was able use various combinations of cmd/alt/shift and the arrow keys to look very intently at a pretty plant while clearly seeing my "Show look at" crosshairs halfway across the sim.

So if you DON'T see the "Show look at" crosshairs on you, that is a clear indication that I am somewhere in the vicinity, watching you do it.

Sadly, chat is still based on proximity to the viewer's avatar, so I am unable to hear your sexy talk. For the most part I just make do with listening to Stan Freberg's "John and Marsha".

I remember reading that the ability to cam was left in purposely because LL felt it would help keep SL 'self policing' to keep pedos and such in check. If that's still the general thinking at LL then I wouldn't expect that policy to change. With draw distance maxed out and camera constraints disabled, one can cam over 2 sims easily.

If it's one's desire to hump cartoons, then so be it. What's the big deal if someone's caming in to watch? From my chair, being a peeping Tom in SL has to be about the most pathetic thing in the world. I mean, c'mon, I'd have more respect for someone being a peeping Tom in RL than I would for one in SL. LOL.

I suppose everyone's curious about the sex end of SL at one point or another, but I got pretty bored with it within a week or so. If that all there was to SL I would have left a long time ago. Building, scripting, running a biz, etc is what I've found to be more interesting than watching two cartoons go at it. I guess it's because cybersex has never really been appealing to me.

Nothin' beats real sex.

Edit: After posting, I read the post above mine... SO, Ava, you're admittedly a peeping Tom? Ok, I was wrong, SL peepers aren't the most pathetic thing in SL. SL Peeping Tom's who openly admit they do it are....

There are tools to keep your Show LookAt cross hairs on your head and no matter where you cam to, they stay there.

It was a joke, Johan. One would think that bringing Stan Freberg into the premise would make that obvious, but perhaps only the old folks in the crowd would get the reference.

ETA: Just to clarify, the part about being able to cam away from the "Show look at" crosshairs was not a joke. If there is anyone within 3-4 sims of you, it is simply not possible to be sure you are not being watched.

That isn't you. You are the person at the keyboard. Anyone camming your avatar is only seeing pixels, not you.

Why not? I mean, who really cares if someone happens to see to pixel characters going at it. We all know that the important stuff happens via Text or Voice, so who cares what kind of humping the avs are doing?

If your so worried about being looked at or cammed then easiest way is to no log in then no one will see you.

That goes for text chat only. No idea how it is in the normal viewer, but in Emerald you can choose to hear voice chat based on camera position. And yes, that does work.

Could you try to remember where you read that? If some jackass with a blog said it, it's one thing. If LL officially said so, it's quite another.

In either case, if camming were taken out of the viewer, *building* would be more difficult.

Not everything in SL is about sex.

In 2002 and 2003 there were no such concerns. Sex was super secret. Everyone on the grid knew who was dating everyone else. There were no secrets except in skyboxes, which cost extra money to keep rezzed at altitude.
