I measured him last night at the hangout. His height changed a lot when he was walking around. He seemed much shorter when he was farther away and much taller when he was up close.

I just can't figure it out.

How tall was he in your lap?

I am bumping you to an 8.5 on the Official Trout Measuring Instrument of Sluttiness. You are an enigma - on the one hand a sweet, gentle, intelligent woman who we would like to wrap up in our arms and protect, and on the other, a temptress to whom we would like to do all sorts of unmentionable things.

Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut.

It doesn't really matter if the SL "meter" isn't quite the same as the RL meter...but internal consistency is critical.
Hi Lindal, some good propositions in your post. Is there a Jira to this effect?

Your last quoted extract confused me a little though. If we have a standardisation within SL of avatar measurement to building measurement then what significance is RL please?

what is the average height for the ladies and for the men? Whats your height? Im 6'9".

Are men from the US of A still about 5'6" on average and the women about 5'3"?

I've always been freakishly tall, and I refuse to say.

Weird. I'm having a hard time measuring. I held a ruler up to the screen and he was about 3.5 inches tall, but when I zoomed in to get a better look, he got taller. He's close to 8 inches now. You people with 6 1/2 foot Avatars must have GIGANTIC monitors! What do you use? Some sort of space age projection screen technology?

Are you measuring Trout or Trout Jr.?

Ceera is set up to be 5'7" tall, as measured with an avatar ruler. When I first found out that the avatar rulers measure eye height, and not to the top of your head, I considered scaling down... But I decided everything in SL seems to be designed for the height increase caused by that silly ruler mixup. So I left her at 5' 7". Which is actually a tad under 6 foot tall, if measured against prims. And I am still shorter than average height.

My shortest two avatars measure in at a diminutive 4' 6" or so.

My tallest is 7 feet tall. (That tall one was actually 7'6" for a while, but that was too tall even to share a hug properly with most people.)

None of the above count any 'unusual' forms, that they wear only occasionally, like Tiny foxes or Large dragons...

I think those numbers are a liitle low. I seem to recall 5'9" and 5'6".

Very good. Wasn't sure. Last time I checked was in the '80s.

I was about to reply to Conifer, and ask her how we knew the SL meter wasn't the same as the RL meter, 'cause I've heard this before...
Either we are different sized than we would be in RL or the measurements are! I like to think it's the measurements that are out - like a US gallon is smaller than a UK gallon.

Hello folks.

I've reviewed WindLight on my blog:
http://www.freeporntimes.com/second-life-blog/passing-windlight

Bear in mind it's NSFW - swearing, nudity, etc... a bit like SL.

"Standard" Heights

I also hadn't a clue what would be a good height! This is not helped by the fact that editing appearance changes your height by a factor...it would be useful if it told you what that means in terms of actual height! People would then realise before they settled on a setting that they were going into SL as a 7'6" giant!!
What recently surprised me was the interaction with pose balls and dance animations though.
Checking with Bits and Bobs - who sell all those - I found out that they design their dances using the following height standards: Male - 53, Female - 40.
A LOT smaller than most avatars I meet!!

Not sure how much tall I am, but yep, I'm tall...

Why? When I make myself shorter there's always some woman looking giant at my side and... pfffff :P

And yep, I'm shorter in RL :P (also have another prob, cause in my country we don't use "feet" to count height, so... lost in here).

Oh you mean in SL. Don't know, I just have the standard issue AV.

I just recently built a gadget to try and get a reliable height measurement: One solid prim to stand on, a phantom prim to line up with the top of your head, click and it gives height in metric & imperial.

As a female with height 47, normally proportioned limbs and fairly low heels, I measure 201cm, or 6'7". No, I didn't believe it either, so I dropped a 2m prim on the the stand and measured that. 200cm, on the dot. Without shoes or hair to confuse the picture, 6'4"/194cm. I noticed that I seem to float above the base a teeny bit, but that can't account for more than an inch or so. My height also varied a bit depending on the stance I was in, so I measured it at the tallest.

Out of interest, I checked height 0, 50 and 100 for comparison, male and female.

Female: 5'7", 6'5", 7'4"
Male: 5'10", 6'9", 7'6"

My conclusions:
If you want to be around average RL height in SL, set height to zero. You'll look like a midget compared to almost everyone else.

People in SL aren't necessarily trying to be extra tall... even if you set height to low average, you could be a basketball player iRL.

It's all a scam by LL to make us buy more land.

My av looks exceptionally freaky as a bald, barefoot guy.

EDIT: Additional research show you can get down to just over 4'2" (129cm) by setting everything height related down to zero.

I'm 6'4" without my shoes. I wish I were shorter, but fortunately, most of the men I talk to are taller than me.

Kelli, excellent research, I did this myself a long time ago after I created a replica of a real life chair I own in SL, and found it looked like a kiddies chair.

I had also wondered for a while why every house I created looked like a rabbit hutch unless I set the ceiling at about 5-6 meters up, I completely agree with you that it must be a Linden plan to sell more land, when you change your AV to be ACTUAL RL height(not the height the standard SL ruler says), a 512 of land looks a whole lot bigger.

I think if SL wants to promote itself as a place for people and companies to try out RL items like a simulator(which they seem to), they should provide a more accurate way for people to know how tall they are in "appearance";(as mentioned in a previous post here), I also think the default AV should be average human height at the 50 point on the slider, right now 50 is very tall.

Of course SL is a fantasy world and people should be allowed to be any size or shape they want, thats the way it should be, but I think people should know.

And the amount of "wow ur short" or "R U a dwarf" I get kinda makes me think they dont.
