Hi Claire,
There are height-measuring things out there that you can click to find out your height. First one that comes to mind is in the Free Dove. It's a prim with hovertext close to the llanding point there.

You can get a more accurate measurement by putting a plain prim next to yourself and sizing it to make it level with the top of your head.

As Joseph pointed out, the click-to-find-out things measure at eye level, the simple resized prim would give you your total height.

If you're interested and need a hand, give me a shout inworld sometime, I'll be happy to help :)

Thanks Sally :) thats kind of you. Can't wait to go and check now lol. See what my imagination has set my avvie at. Am about 5'6'' in RL.

I am 5'7 so I am a shorter than most of the girls I come across! One of my really good friends on here calls me Tiny! LOL But I tried to be taller and it just did not look right on my avi! So I am happy being Tiny! :o

i am quite tall in RL, so my av is as well, of course. i don't know how tall my av is, i just know she's taller than the gals i run with in SL. it wouldn't feel natural to be equal, or shorter. :D

5' 9" in SL

In Rl I am a giant octopus, from outer-space......which might explain my many typo's.

6'4" and still shorter than a lot of my friends. :)

I'm all for being whatever height feels right to you; what I don't like is when the RL-height cadre starts treating the rest of us like we're mildly retarded for choosing an unrealistic height in this unreal world.

I am bumping you to an 8.5 on the Official Trout Measuring Instrument of Sluttiness. You are an enigma - on the one hand a sweet, gentle, intelligent woman who we would like to wrap up in our arms and protect, and on the other, a temptress to whom we would like to do all sorts of unmentionable things.

Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut.

Give the default av length 90 legs and you'll have the average female height, since thats the process generally involved. So around 6 feet.

Men tend to go for 100 height and may or may not choose 100 length legs. This gives a height of around 6'8" to 7"0.

Depending on the measurement thingie, I'm 5'4'' or 5'5''. On purpose just like in RL. I'm a shortie!

Other settings do affect the total. Longer legs will make you well..... longer. :)
Longer to get to bed .. that's why we hobbits are short. When we set our minds on getting some shut-eye we don't want to waste time in losing altitude!

The first thing to remember is that the SL inch, foot, metre and centimetre are only about 85% of their RL equivalents. My height, in RL terms, is 5ft 6in, but in SL measurements that works out about 6ft!

All the same, I do find there are a lot of tall people in SL.

I imagine that a lot of people a. don't realise how tall they are because everything in SL, like furniture etc., seems to cater for tallness and b. when they reduce their height feel very small compared to others.

This is an issue that dates back, from all I've been able to find out, to the Primitar. It was about 7' in scale height, so buildings and other alpha creations were made to scale, so the first "modern" avvies were made to scale, so items for them were too, and so on.

I was about to reply to Conifer, and ask her how we knew the SL meter wasn't the same as the RL meter, 'cause I've heard this before...

But when I read Marianne's post, I realized that it doesn't matter.

The human body is the basis for all dimensional measurements. Yes, I know, today we base them on things like wavelengths of light of a certain color, etc. But the original measurements came from people.

Avatar sizes being derived from the first avs makes excellent sense!

However...some people use SL to do things like architectural modeling, and walkthroughs. For these and other purposes, dimensions ought to be known, and translatable to the real world.

I'd like to see LL do four things:
1. Update the Height appearance slider to be calibrated in actual measurements...preferably centimeters. The measurement should be to the top of the head, not eye level.
2. Because the height slider isn't the only one that affects the end result, add a readout to the Appearance menu showing the av's actual height. (they could add other readouts, for things like waist size, hips, inseam, and cup size, but height is the really important one.)
3. Make sure the avatar measurement is calibrated accurately with the build tool readouts. A 2 meter box should be the same height as an avatar who is 200 cm tall by the appearance readout.
4. Issue a set of calibrated measuring prims in the Library. There should be a meter stick, a 20 cm ruler with mm markings, and a 10m x 10m flat prim scaled in meters, at the minimum.

It doesn't really matter if the SL "meter" isn't quite the same as the RL meter...but internal consistency is critical.

In SL, I'm 5'9" according to the AV ruler I have lying around. (I'm 5'4" in RL.) I'm almost always about a foot off the ground when I go dancing, though my partners never seem to mind :)

My other half was quite surprised the other night to discover that he is 7' tall...

Ah dancing with your feet floating several inches off the ground, I know the feeling well :)

I think I started off at around 5'4'' but due to the height inflation in SL I've nudged the sliders a couple of times in the past year. Last time I checked I was about 5'7" but I got so tired of always being the shortest one in the room that I recently bumped myself up again slightly.

One nice thing about being short: my muzzle hits a very "interesting" place when giving all the amazon ladies a hug ;)

I believe the last time I checked against the 'SL scale', it read 6'7".

In SL I'm 6'6" barefoot and average around 6'9" with boots on. Quite a difference from my RL height of 5'7". If my avatar is built to my RL height I feel like a small child walking around in a world of giants.

RL Im 5ft13 (sounds better than 6ft 1) I keep my avi at a height that makes me feel comfortable with what I see in SL. Im used to not having to look up to see ppls faces in RL and so I dont like having to do it in SL either.

That's the attitude I think most people should take. Originally I had my SL height closer to my RL height but he didn't show that way because things are made bigger and people are taller in SL. Rather than get bent out of shape that people around you are ridiculously tall, just accept the fact that SL uses different standards and adjust accordingly based on those around you. It's not going to change so why give yourself an ulcer over it?

Weird. I'm having a hard time measuring. I held a ruler up to the screen and he was about 3.5 inches tall, but when I zoomed in to get a better look, he got taller. He's close to 8 inches now. You people with 6 1/2 foot Avatars must have GIGANTIC monitors! What do you use? Some sort of space age projection screen technology?

I measured him last night at the hangout. His height changed a lot when he was walking around. He seemed much shorter when he was farther away and much taller when he was up close.

I just can't figure it out.
