I remember reading some time ago the that the average height for females in SL is around 6'7", and the average height for males in SL is 7'1". Of course, that could be completely offbase. But I recall reading that somewhere on these forums many moons ago.

Personally, my avatar is 6'5".

I don't think there's any reliable numbers. It would be wonderful if we could have people run around with a prim ruler and measure people's heights. I'm sure it would surprise a few people to hear how tall they are. Last time I checked I was about 6'2".

Note: measuring can be very inaccurate...........
I think I'm 5.7 or 5.6-ish according to the "click to check your height" thingies.
But I used a prim to check a while back and that showed me to be a little taller.
Now I'm not entirely sure, because I adjusted a little at that point and haven't checked since.
Either way I'm usually quite a bit shorter than most others :D

Height detectors measure the camera height...that is...your avatar's eye level. Prims would go to the actual top of the head.....hence the discrepancy.

I'm 6'5" with my shoes on. In real life I'm no where near that tall. I use to be shorter but I felt I looked ridiculous when others were around and got tired of all the shorty comments from all the idiots who were over 7' tall.

Awww I like guys that aren't 7 foot giants! :D
Actually I think you're onto something there.
I imagine that a lot of people a. don't realise how tall they are because everything in SL, like furniture etc., seems to cater for tallness and b. when they reduce their height feel very small compared to others.

I'm talking "standard" humans here of course.

Just my 2c, IMHO, YMMV etc....

Hi Claire,
There are height-measuring things out there that you can click to find out your height. First one that comes to mind is in the Free Dove. It's a prim with hovertext close to the llanding point there.

You can get a more accurate measurement by putting a plain prim next to yourself and sizing it to make it level with the top of your head.

As Joseph pointed out, the click-to-find-out things measure at eye level, the simple resized prim would give you your total height.

If you're interested and need a hand, give me a shout inworld sometime, I'll be happy to help :)

I am a shorty. I first started out being as tall as I could be until someone told me I needed to gain weight... Be as tall or as short as you wanna... it is SL after all... those things can change with a quick trip to "edit appearance"... much love to all :)

7'2" to 7'5" Depends on footware in SL, 5'11 and 3/4s" IRL!
"You're tall!" gotta love when both worlds imitate ea other.
A couple of my fav ppls are, gotta be half my height, one picks me up and hugs me!
Then my other friends are prob 3/4s my height, the norm in SL and some of my friends are RPers, characters and the same height or even taller.
I tried to be shorter, just felt wrg.
Before anyone thinks that is too tall, check out my posts in da sexy avie,
I think I carry it very well, love being a tall woman in both worlds ;)

A lot of people over-compensating with height in SL :)
My av has the full height slider as I said in another thread, but this is because its a full-prim av who is non-human (and supposed to be taller than human height), and if I shorten any looks incredibly flat opposed to just nice and curvy.

I dunno if there are any real metrics on average avatar height. I suppose if someone could script a reliable height detector and put them out at a reasonable number of places then we could get a better idea.

When I last adjusted height (dunno if it's changed), it doesn't actually tell you how tall you're making yourself. And of course it doesn't prevent you from embellishing areas even though you're 7 feet tall. Most 7 foot people are extremely skinny; not in SL (well, mine is because other it won't fit inside the prims very well =)

5'0" in RL and in SL. I didn't do it on purpose either. I created myself, and then found one of those measuring things and was surprised to find I'd made myself so similar.

I never realized that the devices for measuring height measured from eye height. Its quite a difference, too. I tested with a prim, and it seems to be about 15-16 cm difference. Looks like one of my shapes should be shorter than 0 on the height slider to get the height I want using a prim measure.

Do other settings (legs, torso, etc) affect the total height, or do they just control the proportions? Seems odd that the height slider doesn't allow anything shorter than 1.60 m.

I think I'm around 7ft - same as my RL height:) - but that's largely because I bought a new shape only to find that it is non-mod. And I hate the shape of my nose!

Pointed out to the creator that it was quite odd to have non-mod shapes (so I thought) and he sent me their entire range of 60 shapes .... all non-mod!

Other settings do affect the total. Longer legs will make you well..... longer. :)

Looks like getting short enough, however, would require pretty disproportionate legs.
