Much of my building (Im a man) involves typing numbers in the position, size and rotation boxes.
Most of my girlfriends building involves building by eye.

I wonder if that difference in approach to building is just who we are or if it follows a male/female pattern.

i don't know where you build but most of the guys at herorn are pretty bad at math from what i have seen. i love them dearly but numbrs do't appear to be there stong point.

and are we sure it's pie and not PI?

ps when io was a child in school i had a pie holder for my lunch pail that had PI on it, i loved it wish i had not lost it.

It might also be a function of what's being built. It's easy enough to figure out what numbers to type in to align the corners of boxes in a structure. But if building clothes out of a bunch of twisted tori and tapered cylinders... I dunno: nothing short of the RL space program would get me to solve those equations of intersection.

What's a Pie holder? I loved PI at school. I thought it was such a cool number, it had its own little equation and everything. (I shouldn't have said that...I am such a geek :S)

From the sounds of it, your friend needs to stay in more.

We've tried! And everyone knows the best hair stylists are men. ;)

numbers...eye

I've always used both. I'm also real fond of the grid functions for aligning things.

it was a little triangle shaped plasitc box just big enough for a single piece of pie for my lunch.

Wow!! you guys get to take pie to school! That would've been so cool!
All I got on the odd occasion I took my packed lunch to school was a cheese spread sandwich which had been squished slightly by my leaky drinks bottle, so it was a bit pink from the blackcurrant juice. eugh.
Its no wonder I asked for school lunches... I'll shut up now and leave everyone to get back on topic lol sorry.

I taught myself :)

Ditto this. I also use numbers, and build buildings and gadgets more than clothing or accessories. I think the stats between male and female builders are actually closer to even... I also think both genders tend to just make items as needed (quick chairs, landscaping bits, random parts needed for a household) without really thinking of it as "building." Sometimes, you just make a thing 'cause you need one. I don't consider that building, I consider it... making a thing, 'cause I need one. ^^

I figure that probably skews the stats on who's building and who isn't.

As a RL female, I tend to build things while wearing my male AV (or a funny little alien-type AV I made) to avoid wandering teenaged boys looking for sex. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of women do this.

I usually build "by eye" to start and when something starts looking good I'll go back and clean up the "numbers".

You must be one heck of a builder Pie, you even have your own Poll choice.

Me I'm not much of a builder but the few things I have put together (clubs/sky box/a house for someone) have been fairly well received.

I just had a dear set of SL friends tell me they've been assuming I'm male in RL. I think its because I script - I did one for them. Actually, this revelation has sort of wrecked the pleasure I took in their company.QUOTE]

You code?

That has definelty increased your slut rating in my book... :D

Pity they only use their skills to make hair.

Not the ones I know... they build furniture, sims and buildings.

I'm a woman who doesn't build or script. I shop, though. Does that count?

I do quite a lot of building. In sandboxes I see quite a lot of female avatars but more are male or indeterminate (like robots or in space-suits.

I usually wear my work clothes while building, with a baseball hat and hair in a bun, so I look a bit tomboyish anyway.

Trying to Deduce whether a SL player is a RL male or not because of their ability to create using a computer program like Second Life, or Photoshop or Poser is pretty damn sexist.

I agree, but it's still a good discussion topic because at the end the conclusion will be inconclusive!

Yes, I would never call myself a builder. But I do build this and that as I feel like it. Want a lantern or circular mountain viewpoint?

Interesting question, but after reading the various responses I have to offer that there might just be a fine line difference between "Building" and "Creating/Crafting".

"Building" by and of itself I would consider to be something as basic as a structure (house, store, bridge, etc.). "Crafting" might be more in the line of hair, lamps, clothing, fountains, or animals - things that require a bit more minute detail beyond simple angles and shapes. Kind of hard to explain, actually.

I have "built" a couple of houses, pools, barbeques, fireplaces, and an outhouse <grin>. I have "crafted" some chairs, tables, planters, and an old-time hand water pump.

I am male in RL and SL, and I have begun to both "Build" and "Craft" items and I am 95% self-taught. Being really terrible with numbers , I simply rely on "eye" to do this until I get to the point of blending textures to match adjacent shapes when linking is not quite possible in the early stages of a project.

It is kind of interesting learning from my mistakes, and - to break the "male" mold - I am not afraid to ask for directions or assistance, either.

Its only sexist cuz the Broads say so!!! :p

But, given the industry numbers, I'd say a large % are male.
The gaming industry itself is largely male.

We need more women!!! *

*Preferably Hot, Single Women 20-30 yrs old. ;)

Definately requires skill lol. I'm rubbish at shopping... I always come back with junk and a pile of uneeded stuff which doesn't look quite right outside of the store lol. :D
