From: Okiphia Rayna I think of it as clothes and such too.. Wholeheartedly agree. Last time I checked my skirts were made with the same tools used to build the castle we live in. Building is a bit of a confusing term in that respect IMHO, because I think most people will associate that first and foremost with buildings and such, noth clothing, accessories and hair. Oh and as to the original question : I have no idea, so I'll have the pie please

From: Jessica Elytis It's easier to work in a sandbox if you have on a male avatar form. If you go there as a female, you get all the advances and such and it gets irritating after about the first 3 seconds of conversation ofter the "No thanks. I'm just building." shhh don't tell them we do this or it won't work anymore! "It's ok honey, mama will still use you!" *gives her male alt a hug*

From: Conan Godwin It's more likely that just as many men want to build, but it's only the women who ask to be taught, while the men just muddle through on their own. Asking for help is a sign of weakness, didn't you know? I taught myself

From: Jessica Elytis Not sure, but I'll toss out a little fact I've found.

~Jessy Wouldn't it be ironic if some of these people that switch from their usual female avs to male avs to avoid harassment are actually dudes in the first place?! Just thought I'd blow your minds really quick. Judging by how most of the stuff in SL that isn't sex related is clothing and shoes and whatnot and how most of the guy's clothing looks pretty fruity I'd say there's a large population of female builders. But again...there's no way to be sure after reading that old story about the guy that was a manager at a grocery store and quit to design women's clothing for a living in SL.

From: Conan Godwin It's a well known fact that 104% of female avatars are actually men in real life, but that only -16% of male avatars are women in real life.
These are amongst the 17.5% of statistics that are not just made up. How so very true=D It's quite funny when this applies heavily to escorts most of whom are perverted men...

I'm gonna go with the women... think for a moment of all the designers, especially the big names... not just the ones that do clothes but all the accessories... yeah
now gadget and big builds, I see more men doing that.... but I see more women talking discussing and helping... YMMV

From: Okiphia Rayna lol scripting is evil in my opinion.. maybe I'll learn it eventually And then you, like all scripters, would know the manifold *ways* in which it is evil. But I think this skews things a bit. As a male, I still enjoy carving up prims now and then, but I'd venture to guess that, of the males drawn to content creation, a larger percentage of us have fallen down the scripting rabbit hole than the percentage of females suffering the same fate. (There's a quite substantial number of female scripters; I'm just positing totally subjective ratios here.) So, I think a lot of men sorta don't build anymore, for the inability to find the Editor window under all the damned scripts on the screen. From: Mjolnir Uriza making prim skirts, making jewelry, making shoes, this is all apart of building Oh, yeah, these totally count as building. And it's been only recently that I've "built" prim clothing--and then only out of desperate frustration with finding anything for sale that I'd consider wearing. The point being that most men just aren't gonna think of turning that first plywood cube into a shoe. A car, maybe; a building, most likely. Maybe even an avatar. But not clothes, not most men, not if we can possibly avoid it.

I think its because I script - I did one for them. Actually, this revelation has sort of wrecked the pleasure I took in their company. sigh. I know there are few female SW engineers in Germany (their country), but none the less it was disheartening.

It seems that the women build more of the finely detailed things while the men build weapons and the more scripted type things.

build what? Buildings? Terrain? Furniture? Jewelry?
Almost everyone I know who builds *anything* is a woman. Most of them are even women in RL. At least, I think they are ...

I started out with costumes and whatnot, having made historical outfits in RL. But I started making vehicles because I wanted a Victorian bicycle (for those interested in fashion history, the bicycle was a HUGE influence on women's clothing as well as the women's rights movement of the late nineteenth century). I had never scripted before, and in fact have always been a bit computer phobic. But there's one thing I hate worse than technology, and it's feeling stupid. So I forced myself to sit through scripting classes, swallowed embarrassment and asked friends questions, and a year later, I almost feel as if I know how to code sometimes. I know the term "empowerment" gets a tad overused in some circles, but really, learning to build and script gave me a jolt of confidence in an area of knowledge that I had long ago given up on. I admit RL gadgeteering still frightens me--I got a friend to assemble my computer, and I'll call AAA before I consider dealing with a tire myself. But in this virtual world, I've got my sleeves rolled up and wrench spinning happily in my hand

mmm...pie
I have just started building. I was going to say men but when I read that you were including clothes jewellry etc I chose pie because I think it is relatively equal.
Anyway, whats with the pie? Why are people on the forums obsessed with it? not a bad thing, mind, but interesting.

Much of my building (Im a man) involves typing numbers in the position, size and rotation boxes. Most of my girlfriends building involves building by eye.
I wonder if that difference in approach to building is just who we are or if it follows a male/female pattern.

thats a good thought actually,
females are supposed to have a good eye for detail but men are supposed to be able to solve mathematical puzzles easier - including visual logic puzzles.
I suppose it depends on what you are building and where and how much time you have. I tend to build by eye simply because I haven't got the hang of the numbers bit just yet.

I wonder if that difference in approach to building is just who we are or if it follows a male/female pattern. No, I do the ol' number-entry thing too - and yes, I'm a girl. It just makes life easier when positioning things... trying to do it by eye would drive me insane. I've been checking out the Star Wars sims/shops recently, and have been interested to note that a lot of the content (weapons, ships etc) and well as the builds themselves* have been made by female AVs. That shouldn't surprise me really, seeing as my sister and I were both Star Wars-nuts from an early age - and yes, it was the technological side of it we loved most, not just the sight of Han Solo being shmexy to the max (that came later ) * Taris, by Furia Freeloader is a particularly good one.
