Wicked, that's awesome.

Does anyone know how many sims make up the mainland.

Some comments on the comments...

First of all, I didn't use slurl.com for making the map; I
used the map API, which is still in Beta:

http://secondlife.com/developers/mapapi/

There may be differences between the API, slurl.com and the
Inworld Map. Not sure.

It's possible that in the process of capturing the 990x590px sections
and assembling them, there may be some inaccuracy; this
first run was just to get a basic idea of scale and not pin-point
accuracy, I'm sure it's close.

As for mis-labeling the "mainland". I put the label
for the north and south continents for some point of reference.
Afaik, the southern continent is the area of the first land mass,
with the sim Da Boom being among the oldest sims.

Here's a full resolution version of this map for anyone interested:

As well...here's an older thread which has links to road
maps of Heterocera (the north mainland) and Sansara (the
south mainland) I made months ago:

SLURL uses the MapAPI images, which were (at least up until now!) more than a year out of date - and not synced to the in-world map. I'm ecstatic to see that they've finally started updating the MapAPI images, though, as I wrote an application about a year ago to download and stitch together full-scale (256x256) images for the entire grid - 'cept it got too big after a while for ImageMagick to handle, so I had to just make chunks. I abandoned it when it turned out the MapAPI images weren't being updated. I may have to take another whack at it now!

Oh - and THANK YOU for your work! These maps look fantastic!

The area east of Serena is not entirely empty. It has secret islands in it. I saw a six island cluster to the southeast of Serena back in October. I tried to teleport there. One of the islands was called Port Said. I could not go there since they did not let strangers teleport in. A short while later the islands disappeared. I believe they were masked so as not to appear on the map.

There are islands in the far northwest like that as well. If you go to Isis Industries or Isis (I forget the exact name) and look around, you'll see a single isolated by seemingly empty ocean. There has to be something there.

What goes on in those secret places has to be evil as far as I'm concerned. Why would they need secrecy if what they did there was ordinary?

This is fabulous--even though it means I'm going to have to bestir myself ( ) to study the Map API now.

A couple of Wiki pages may be of interest.

LDPW's maps of existing and planned roads on four of the continents:

Very cool maps, thanks for putting this together. I was able to find my islands! :)

One thing I noticed on these maps, and those at the land store, that islands which have recently been deleted for one reason or another, still appear on the grid. I recently deleted two OS regions and consolidated four more, and the land store and these maps still show those regions as existing. It seems that when regions are unplugged this way, they are 'gone' inworld but continue to exist in the background. Or at least, they continue to exist until the server space is repurposed later on.

Might need an update. The Moles have made more progress building out the roads, and the major routes are missing their highway numbers on the map (1, the Inner Heterocera Road; 2, the Outer Heterocera Road; 2A, Bridge Road; 50, the Shermerville-Nova Albion Highway and it's perpendicular business spurs in Shermerville; and 66, the Bay City-Ahern Highway, and the other half of 66, the Hidden Lakes Highay (the road that passes Waterhead).

Highway numbers in Bay City, Heterocera and Nova Albion based on highway signs along the routes and a map found at Nova Albion Infohub. All other route numbers based on signage along the route.

This is very cool. Would like to blow it up for better detail and names, thought.

Don't forget that Carl Metropolitan has been working for quite some time on maps, and on getting accurate info from Linden to update them. He has two maps available at most NCI locations. If you take a copy, and rezz it somewhere, it becomes a kiosk, and any new updates he makes to the map will automatically be pushed to your map kiosk as well. It doesn't show all the private islands, but it has all of the mainland continents, and even lists the various names used for some continents, when a single name has not been decided on yet by Linden.

I was disappointed that Carl wasn't interested in updating the maps for highways when I approached him during summer semester.

I am interested in doing so--I just lack the time.

The Moles have the proposed highways and their maps on the wiki.

Wrong account. I case it wasn't obvious, NCI Golem is me. NCI Golem is the accounting alt for NCI, and I had been logged in as him to check NCI transactions.

Sort of. Even the Moles maps aren't accurate on the wiki (Route 2A appears on the grid in reality, but is listed on the map as Route 4), nor are the maps comprehensive (think like AAA highway map).
