Map of the Roads in Sansara for Drivers

I recently started revisiting the roads of the Sansara
Mainland after someone gave me a new car to try out.

When I first tried the roads over a year ago it was a
very iffy experience. I gave up after a short while
because it wasn't much fun. Too easy to fly off
the road.

The car handled the road better than I thought it
would, but I wanted something more stable so I re-engineered
Arcadia's freebie truck; adjusted the steering so it
wasn't so sensitive and upped the throttle threshold.

With this machine I have traveled nearly all the roads
in the Sansara Mainland continent over the last couple
of weeks. That represents many hours of traveling
(at probably the equivalent of 10km per hour).

Sim crossings are still a problem; but overall, driving
on the roads is doable.

A tip for drivers: if you get stuck, just right click
on the car, then click Edit and use the arrow keys
to move the vehicle up and forward of the sim crossing
or other obstacle. It's part of the skills required! =)

So here's a map of the major roadways in Sansara, which
probably has the largest connected roadway in Second Life.

Oh! Dat's wonderful! I wish I'd had it when I travelled across the continent in my SpaceBus (found in Privateer Space) the other day. I went from around the upper right hand corner road, down into the snowlands, and up to the left hand side near the sim with the SL "Hand" in the water.

Great work! I'd love to render someting like dis as a real-sorta road map, ya know? Dis will go with me on my next trip.

Oh, an f'r the record? I made dat trip in one take. No crashes at all.

And when you find road missing or a sim your vehicle can't enter file a support ticket, because otherwise nothing will ever get fixed

That's awesome, thanks! I think you and Carl Metropolitan should work together on your map projects (/327/3e/245749/1.html).

BTW, would it be possible to host the full size image somewhere else? Image Shack reduced it to 789x600. I'd love to get ahold of the big image.

Amen!

...which reminds me, I need to put something in about continuing that road in Sansara, past Hawkshead. And the great wall in Heterocera, too. As if the LDPW isn't busy enough in Bay City.

I'd recommend Flickr.

I tink it might look better is the roads "popped" a bit more, but I'm not sure off the top of my head how to describe it. Might not really be an issue anyway, cuz it would read differently "at size." Still, I'm not gonna be picky at all, cuz whatcha made it great!

Do you mind if I slap it on a prim and hang it up for people to see?

That is a great map! I wish I had thought to trace the roads on my Sansara and Heterocera maps. Absolutely lovely work. Do you mind if I display that map in-world at NCI's map collection at Nova Civis Caledon?

Depending on what software he created the road overlay in, it might be possible to "pop" the roads a bit using either a contrasing color outline (probably white everywhere except the snowlands), or creating a semi-transparent halo around the roads.

Good work - I love your map - It will prove invaluable to me next time I want to take my lil VW Bettle out for a spin :)
Many Thanks

Hey Carl -- Feel free to use the map as needed. Your map work is very inspirational!

I did the map in Photoshop, so the road traces are on a layer; if you need/want it, just let me know.

Today I traveled and traced out most of the roads in the north mainland. You might notice that I'm
now following your lead in fonts... =) It's not 100% complete, but is good enough for release. The purpose of these maps is to inspire people to explore the roadways.
[Ironic that I live on a Linden waterway, far away from any roads.]

Great work!

On the Heterocera Atoll map: watch for more rail going in to the West, in that peninsula dominated on your map by a big black box. A big rail rally is setting up there.

A good reason. I kinda like the roads, rails (fix the SLRR someone, please? an the Luna/Dore Trolly!) and waterways of the mainland. It's a great way to "see the world."

Thank you very much, Infrared. My map overlays are in Illustrator, but I can take your Photoshop layer file and vectorize it in Illustrator. I have some ideas for how to make the roads "pop" out nicely. I'd like to use your road layers and you will have a credit line on my maps.

I will contact you in world this weekend.

Sansara Road Trip
06-09-2008 07:31
Hi - I too love the roads in SL. Back in Feb this year I started a grand old road trip across the road that starts in Noyo and you can see my progress here: http://headburroantfarm.wordpress.com/category/bb-road-trip/

I have to say, upgrading from my slow lappy to a powerful PC has helped the driving experience immensely :)

My group has a parcel beside the bridge and road on the Western edge of Amida sim.
It's set for build so anyone can rezz vehicles there.
The Governor's bridge actually encroaches on the parcel, but we forgive her :)

The location is nice and central for anyone wanting to drive around the West of the continent.

Also note people the response time on tickets I had filed for sims I couldn't enter in my vehicle or bad sim crossings have taken over 2 months to get responses, one of them about the road comletely missing in a Hantu for over 12 months was fixed by partially blocking it with road closed signs and maintenance cones which I personally found funny at first but 2 months later they are still there.

Wow! Excellent work - thanks!

Ok, so I scoured both maps trying to find my house. :)

Anyone: Is there some place I can go to look up my sim name to find out which continent it is on? TIA
