Mapping Second Life is fun but time consuming. Here's a map of the entire SL universe, as per the data supplied by the current map API. It's fairly up to date, my house and recent changes I've made to it appear in the images. The API allows for six levels of zoom. This map image was captured using the lowest resolution, Level 6. At Level 6 zoom, the total image size is about 5900 pixels wide. The point of this image is to give an idea of scale. The mainland is quite huge, I live in the north continent and have been exploring for two years and haven't seen a fifth of it. Now compare the mainland with the constellation of islands and you'll have an idea...of the scope of this crazy world we love and scorn and are part of. =) Link to 1000px http://img187.imageshack.us/img187/8192/level6mapv21000pxdv4.jpg- Infrared

Infared, some thing about that map doesn't look right. I think there are islands north and east of Gatea. I've done a fair amount of exploring, but once you leave the roads, you get tangled in ban lines and obstructive builds. It can break your heart sometimes and leave you frustrated and angry at others.

Wow, this is utterly perfect! I have to make a presentation to the college big brass (including the VP!) about Second Life and it's possibilities as a teaching/learning environment - TOMORROW! I am SO stealing your map for my PowerPoint! Hey, would you have a closer view of the mainland, too? B.

How did you get the images? I've managed to pull the LLUUIDs out of SL using openmv but I could never find a way to get them out of SL and in some format I could manipulate them and put them on the web.
*edit: Oh wow, the web map has been updated. I hadn't looked in some months but last time I did it was over a year out of date.

I noticed the map updating right after I got my land this past summer. It didn't take long at all for my cookie jar to show up. (^_^) In fact... Our winter update is showing up quite nicely at the moment. (^_^)y http://slurl.com/secondlife/ferguson/62/238/96/?title=Darkly%20Cute

This is very cool. Would like to blow it up for better detail and names, thought.
Don't forget that Carl Metropolitan has been working for quite some time on maps, and on getting accurate info from Linden to update them. He has two maps available at most NCI locations. If you take a copy, and rezz it somewhere, it becomes a kiosk, and any new updates he makes to the map will automatically be pushed to your map kiosk as well. It doesn't show all the private islands, but it has all of the mainland continents, and even lists the various names used for some continents, when a single name has not been decided on yet by Linden.

That continent always updated fine I think. It was just the ones far east of that which were always blank. Sadly some sims still aren't in the map, for example my sim Palm is coming up blank.

For over 18 months, the map ended along the longitudinal line roughly by the northwest bay on Satori. You couldn't see anything east of it. But now I can see my sims. Yay!

It looks like a huge game of LIFE.
Maybe somewhere in the 10,000th generation of a hybrid mating of the Bunnies and the R Pentomino.

Thanks, Infrared. Looks like it took a lot of hard work and time, but it is much appreciated...it was hard for me to get any scope of the size of SL. Have a great holiday Ashe

It's not quite accurate. What you have circled as the "North and South Mainland" are Heterocera Atoll and Sansara, respectively. It also leaves out the six other mainland continents as unlabelled.

From: Infrared Wind Here's a map of the entire SL universe, as per the data supplied by the current map API. Comparing this with SLURL, you seem to have offset the new continent that should be above the Nautilus/Corsica family. You're showing it as being north of Heterocera Atoll.

That is amazing, Infrared!
I noticed that the new continent that was forming directly north of Gaeta seems to have moved to the west so it is now over the old mainland. I wonder what's up with that.

Sadly I've been too busy with NCI to update those for about six months. I hope to do another update over Christmas. I've got new views of the mainland continents to work from, too.

Those lonely islands in the northeast are private estates in a portion of the grid where no one else is allowed to build. Specifically, the KGBR and Serena estates have their own private portions of the grid where they never have to worry about being crowded out.
(Just go to the Land Store and look up 'MLBR Mosaico 3' or 'Serena Blue Lagoon' for examples.)
How do I get that sort of treatment?

Strange, the map in the OP's JPG does not appear to sync up with the in-world map. Specifically, it seems like a swath of sims in the top half of the image is shifted to the west. Compare that JPG with this screenshot I just took from the in-game world map. The finger-like mini continent where the yellow-and-white You circle is on my screenshot is directly over the newer mainland continents. But in the JPG from the original post, the mini continent is scooted over to the left. The Sirena estate, which I mentioned in my previous post, is that grid of islands in the northwest corner of the image below- in the original post's image, these islands are west of the mainland, but in this image they are east of the mainland.
