Damaged Linden Content... what to do?

A close call yesterday on another bit of old Linden-sponsored content. The Big Easy and Biloxi sims are being used for the SL Day of Remembrance, with the former maintaining its original French Quarter New Orleans build (I believe this area was built back in 2005 as part of post-Hurricane Katrina fundraising).

Well, I witnessed my first roll back yesterday, after a glitch and a couple missteps led to the accidental near-wiping of the Big Easy sim. For a bit, the sim looked a bit like that saloon in Oak Grove. It was bad. Thankfully, the roll back restored the place to its glory.

Makes me wonder if this is what happened in Oak Grove and the vehicle sims at some point, though. Particularly the latter, given the sims former use as the home of the SL birthday and Burning Life events.

Also, I heard back on my ticket for the Morris archery range -- denied. They're keeping scripts off there "for the time being." Not sure if I should keep pushing on that, or what.

Okay... I've added a couple more issues to the JIRA. A couple are small and nit-picky, and at least one is huge. Please consider a vote for them:

https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/MISC-1139
https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/MISC-1140
https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/MISC-1141
https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/MISC-1142
https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/MISC-1143

These are added with the still outstanding:

https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/MISC-1073
https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/MISC-1074
https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/MISC-1075
https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/MISC-1081
https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/MISC-1097

I recently heard the LDPW changed the combat sandboxes. Anyone been there to take a look? I obviously don't think I should, as I'll get blasted to smithereens in short order!

I also submitted support tickets on the new issues, and was pleased to see that all the old issues have no gone to "work in progress." We'll see what comes of 'em

In preparing the materials for the ticket, I did find a couple nice piccies of the Moth Temple lamps:

http://www.sluniverse.com/pics/pic.aspx?id=2533

http://www.sluniverse.com/pics/pic.aspx?id=2525

I wonder if it was Ben or Xenon who was behind those -- and, for that matter, if they still exist at all. They look quite pretty.

ALthough I seem to be mostly talking to myself here, maybe someone knows the answer to these...

Eric Linden (who did soem of the early bridges and stuff) is a 'civilian' now, as is Ben Linden (HMS malmute, vehicle sims, Busy Bens, etc.).

Xenon Linden did the Temple in Iris, aka Moth Temple. I would assume that the moth lamps were his creation -- but is he even still in our world as a civilian? If not, then content he made is likely gone gone gone. I think he may have been involved with many of the Linden builds on the Heterocera Atoll (the unfinished great wall, for example). Anyone know if he is still around as a civilian and, if so, if he has any interest in seeing some of his creations intact?

Also, it appears that Nigel Linden was heavily involved with the SLRR, and is the owner of the Luna/Dore trolley Is he now a "heritage" Linden? Did anyone else take on this project, or is his leaving why it is so far gone?

Aside: in looking at some of these items, especially the moth temple, Xenon was a heck of a builder.

Yet another note: There is a new volcanic island in the channel of the Korean Continent. Unfortunately, it works much the same as Mount G'al right now. I should add, however, that the area appeared to still be "in the works"

Not entirely. ;)

Hadn't thought about that before. When something was built and owned by a Linden, then that Linden leaves, we're stuck with removing it or leaving it as-is. I wonder if LL has some kind of godmode fix around that. Older scripted items with physics movements or particles have needed a lot of care over the last year.

I would imagine they have several options, but many of them might be limited.

Things like the bridge in Mimas and the Wengen chairlift require relitive small repairs: I believe there is a god tool for force-copying, which would allow them to take parts from oen side of these builds, and use them for the other, missing parts. There are other examples of this content in-world, such as Montara/Hooper for the bridge, and Voss for the chairlft.

In cases like Mount G'al or the trains, there is no missing content per se -- largely it is a case of maintenance as well as the workd changing and outmoding the content. It would need a "new" fix, not old materials. This is sort of the same as the archery range, which could work today -- if build/script was enabled.

Finally, in situations like the Saloon in Wild West Town, or the missing elements of the vehicle sims, one could do a restore... assuming there is any restore to go back to that is old enough to fix the issue *and* doesn't otherwise harm any new content (this would only be an issue in Oak Grove, which is also home of Busy Ben's as well as the new (relatively sleaking) educator's stage). Otherwise, it comes down to doing much like the bridges and lifts: recreating the content, force copying the parts that can be used, or getting ahold of the original creator (the former Ben Linden in the case of the vehicle sims; long-absent members for the saloon -- not very likely to locate).

The lamps near the Moth temple would fall into a similar category, though I wonder if they had been deliberately removed at some point: the rest of the build is so very intact, only the lamps are gone.

The new volcano is in Ichelus, and I've let Michael Linden know of the issue.

Here's a thought, because I am in no way experienced with how people take damage in dis world of ours. Could a prim be scripted in some say to cause a whole lot of damage on collision - say, enough to "kill" an avatar an send them home?

I've been debating talkin to Misses Malaprop about it, who would seem to have both the skills an the sense of whimsey f'r such a thing. Anyone have any thoughts?

I agree. I would support some qualified and honest people going around and fixing all the stuff we marveled at as noobs. I know the linden suspension bridge in Mimas has been missing a few key pieces for quite a while now.

Maybe if it fell and Avatars got killed they might do something :)

Mari, I am not sure if this fits with what you are looking to do. OI is evidently really messed up (Hud not working). For a new person it is beyond frustrating:

EDIT: NVM Mari, I see you commented on that blog. :)

Yup! I also talked a bit with Tateru about it. Definitely an issue, no question.

All the support tickets that correspond to these issues have now been listed as "Work In Progress" instead of "New" except for two:

- The non-working archery range in Morris is listed as "Solution Provided" -- the solution being that it is going to remain inoperable. Likely too many issues with habing a build/script area so close to the Ahern Infohub. Still a shame. For now, I'll practice my archery on the targets on Livingtree.

- Matthew close the vehicle sim problem last night, citing the "excellent research" into the issue (Really, the thanks is for Winter Ventura, who did a amazing job of detailing the sims' troubles). Unfortunately, I did not see any fix on an initial buzz through the vehicle sims this morning -- if anything, it looked as if additional content (roads) was missing. This could have simply been on my viewer's end. That an I did it early this mornin' an very briefly before havin' to go to th' borin' place.

So, so far... kinda a disheartening reaction.

EDIT: Also, on the blog, the LDPW has a poll for seleting some new road construction on the Hetereocera Atoll. Route #6 seems to be a continuation of the Great Wall.

More updatey goodness

- All of the JIRA items earlier in this thread now have DEV #s except for the troubles with trains. As these were assigned by "Lindenbot," I'm not sure whaat exactly that means overall.

- Word from the coordinator of the Rail Rally later this month is dat Michael Linden has trains on his list for 4th quarter of 2008. Dat might be a while.

- It does indeed appear that no work has been done in the vehicle sims, in spite of the closed support ticket. The cart track and folly are still borked, signage is still missing in several areas, there is still no gate 1, etc.

Aside: visiting the vehicle sandbox gave me a chance to "road test" the soap box racer I made in Kid Scouts the other day. I found it quite fun to buzz around those sims at breakneck speeds. After talking with another friend who made her first visit there, I really find myself wondering if many people even know of the existence of the vehicle sandbox.

- Lava (which had appeared to be a direct copy of Mount G'al's lava) has been removed from the new volcano in the Korean Channel. According to Michael Linden, this is because the moles are developing "better lava." One may hope that the improved lava will also show up in Mount G'al. Perhaps sacrifices will resume as well.

You know, we had some time of really rough days on the grid. now that some work is being on on the lava, things are smoothing out. Perhaps G'al is pleased with this work?

After checking out Bay City, I'm a bit more hopeful on some of this, most notably the following

https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/MISC-1097
There is a tour balloon in Bay City, which is reminescent to the Ambleside one. This could make the balloon tour easier to fix

https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/MISC-1075
There is both a trolley and a water trolley in Bay City. This could easily be adapted to some of the disrupted rail services, most notably (given the location) the Dore to Luna trolley.

I also note dat the support ticket I put in for Mount G'al has been closed (not "solution provided," but "closed";). I hope dat's a good ting. Then again, we had asset server issues today, too. Beware the wrath of G'al!

well... a lot of this seems to still be in progress. The Luna/Dore trolley is still pretty badly borked. Better after a Havok 4 update or two: it makes it out of Luna, but doesn't seem to be able to make the big turn in Nova Albion.

Checked the snowlands locations. The issues at the Chalet are not yet resolved, but the Wengen Chairlift appears to be getting some work. I suspect (hope) it is still "in progress," but the lift is running.

Overall, this can make a good place for winter fun nowadays. I wonder if the Winter Festival will be there again this year?

Necroposting, an replying to myself. Bad, bad!

It does look like Winter festival will be there again, or at least that's what I'm hearing. Still no change in the issues in Wengen since th' last update, though. Hope they can get this stuff done before the crowds descend!

The archery range is still down in Morris, and not likely to come back (probably too difficult next to an infohub). There has been some issues going on there of note, though, as the old archery sign was removed (it is still in the Aditi grid). This is sorta bad, as the archery range in DeHaro is also shy a sign, and this could mean the only copy of this sign is on Aditi -- soon to be refreshed. This could mean losing it to the sands of time. Michael Linden does seem to have a temporary sign in Morris on Agni, but the nice Alberto Linden original thing... well, who knows. It might cease to exist, which would make me sad.

While there, I also looked at some of the content in Rizal. I think I know why no one uses Jetball -- it doesn't work. Nor does the other thing by Sabine Linden there. This could use some serious overhaul. Heck, the archery could even go there, too!

Oh, I think there's work going on with the Luna to Dore trolley, or at least I hope so. There's chunks of trackway that are now missing! I haven't support ticketed it yet, though, cuz I wanna check in with LDPW people an find out if it is indeed "in progress" stuff. Which they'd road coned it, though!

I note also that Luna Oaks Galleria and Busy Ben's are emptied out in advance of the next lottery. The New Port Yacht Club is also going to be used in a similar fashion.

FInally, one bit of news: The Linden Village balloon tour is back! They're using a different system for the tour, an I miss it telling me what I'm seeing on the ground, but it is in operation again! Very glad to see this back in operation, even if I do hope it will still be improved in the upcoming months:

A couple of the JIRA entries were closed (the ones on Wengen, which led me to review the sites). I will have to reopen.

Ya, I always see people standing up there on the platform, including last night. Very glad to see it bak in operation, even if I wish for a bit more. :-)

Edited to add: Some of the other items I have on the JIRA are still open issues, including the lack of lethality at Mount G'al, the damaged content in Oak Grove, Dore, Iris, Wengen, and the vehicle sims, and others.

I also added one more to the JIRA:
