Damaged Linden Content... what to do?

So a week or two ago, I talked about the condition of the saloon in Oak Grove:

/327/19/250763/1.html

I also opened a support ticket on it, and even happened to catch Char Linden online (the Saloon remains are owned by Char and Ryan Linden) to alert her.

Recently, though, I've noticed a few examples of Linden content that is otherwise broken.

- The archery range in Morris is no nobuild and noscript, effectly closing it down
- All the trains (esp SLRR and Dore/Luna) are borked, some for months
- The Balloon ride in Ambleside is defunct
- The "Great Wall" in Hetereocera is unfinished, and several sections have suffered at the hand of the "phantom prims at sim borders" bug.

For what it's worth, I've put in support tickets and JIRAed each of these. Feel free to vote on 'em if ya wish:

http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/MISC-1073
http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/MISC-1074
http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/MISC-1075
http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/MISC-1097
http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/MISC-1081

Obviously, there *are* bigger issues out there, but I figure that some of these places and things are important. They are things that should show the new folks some possibilities. In their current state, they're useless.

My question is this: Is there any other Linden-specific content that is missing or broken that I've missed? It's a big grid. so I'm sure there's someting out there I did't hear about yet.

Also, is there some other way to get this stuff fixed? Anyone you'd suggest I pester or anyting you might suggest I do?

Finally - does it matter? Does anyone care about dat stuff?

Sounds like a great job for that "moles" thing that has gone curiously quiet, of residents helping work on Linden land to build bridges, roads, etc etc etc.

It looks like they're tied up in Bay City, but I agree.

it's starting to remind me of New York back in the 70's when I was a kid. The City was broke, the subways were in shambles, firehouses were being closed, the big blackout and riots and the famous Daily News Headline when the city asked Gerry Ford for assistance.
"Ford to City: Drop Dead".

Marianne on your visit to the Moth Temple you may have noticed there were walkways going to nowhere, some original atoll bridges just there for no apparent reason too.

I may have missed dat. I wonder what was there, or if they've always gone nowhere. Hmn...

It was near the lighthouse (?) part, where the original atoll buildings are situated. I went to moth temple because of the other thread and was delighted to find a old site I stumbled across as a newbie, never remembering where it had been. It's the bit where the buildings are under water 'aqua-something?', it's shame that the idea doesn't ever appeared to have taken off.

It would make a great meeting area for merfolk.

Ya. Havok4 borked a lot of stuff. I wish I'd done more advance testing.

Hmn... I looked over there, and i did not an atoll building foundation in the water. I thought it was jes "ruins." Silly me!

An I agree. The whole area would be greeat for some boating, merfolk, etc. Seems awful deserted, though.

hmmm, maybe it was ruins, but the position of some prims just looked wrong. in three trips to that area, this time and two when new to SL I always bumped into non-English speaking avies, I just wonder if that's a jump site for some particular RL nation?

I know it sounds corny, but I wish there was some way that we could easily get perms to just fix some of that stuff. Create a volunteer Corps of SLEngineers that can temporarily get perms to fix the old showcases. Leaving them around like broken toys feels too much like the real world for me.

I agree. I woudl hope the LDPW would do someting like dis, but right now they seem focused on new content, rather than doing work on existing structures. Seems like it would be a 'real" SL Park and Rec service, involved with the maintenance and other dutiees surrounding SL's "legacy" builds.

I could so get into dat.

I agree. I would support some qualified and honest people going around and fixing all the stuff we marveled at as noobs. I know the linden suspension bridge in Mimas has been missing a few key pieces for quite a while now.

This'll probably sound incredibly corny.. but oh well.

I've always been enamored with the Linden content. For me, I see it as a mysterious relic from what seems like a bygone era... or even a lost civilization. Everything in SL is constantly changing, but much of the Linden content has always been there. It's like a part of history.

I recall having my imagination sparked every time I ventured to the Linden village and saw the Temple of the Floating Hand... just sitting there stoically on the hill, looking over the surrounding sims. No real explanation, no indication what it was for. It was just there.

The same thing for the Atoll continent too. Leaving behind content like the board walks, abandoned stilt city, temple, and of course the great wall were (I think) really cool ideas. It gave the entire continent a back-story for everyone to build off of instead of just dolling out land. I was there every time I logged on, just exploring the continent. I got goosebumps going through the abandoned city. For whatever reason, knowing it wasn't created by any of use seemed to enhance the mystery. I wish the Lindens would do more things like that.

... though I suppose we'd need Magellan for that, eh? ;)

So, uh... yes. I'd love to see the Linden content repaired!

I feel *exactly* the same way. I *like* seeing dat old content, and exploring it, and havin' fun with it. I like other things too, of course -- but the old Linden content jes seems, I dunno, special. Like visiting a state park or someting.

It's kinda why I'd like to see it all workin' again. 'specially so other new folks can see it an enjoy it, too, an those of us who've been around for a while can rediscover 'em

I've been here for a year now, and not seen most of the Linden builds. The ones I have seen often had things that were broken, as Mari mentions. I think repairing them would be a great part of the mainland revitalization effort.

Thanks for getting this started Mari! :)

All of this reminds me of the original Boardwalk in Varney five years ago. Back then, we had prim decay, and parts of the build were disappearing. The prims would just slowly vanish, and parts of the build would be hovering unrealistically in mid air. As small as SL was back then, the place would actually be very quiet and lonely. I used to go there to play the old slot machines which listed Philip Linden as their creator.

Those LL builds serve as a common thread, a way to draw the vision back so everyone in the world has a shared experience and a glimpse of a bigger picture. Without that we all resolutely peer into our microscopes and believe we see through a telescope.

There are a million places I've never been to - never even heard of, a million people I have not met and with whom I may not share interests or even language. I think having a few shared things is of value.

I've read about dat. Glad we dun have prim decay nowadays. Dat'd be terrible.

Ya, it gives a sense of place. Imagine San Francisco without the Golden Gate Bridge. Some of these places in here, too, can provide that same thing -- and the condition of such provides a cultural barometer. If the Golden Gate's paint was faded, suspension cables showing obvious wear, and the road bed full of potholes, what would this say about the bridge, the people of San Francisco, the city itself, or even the United States as a whole?

Now apply that thought to Second Life, and look at broken trains, missing saloons, borked chairlifts, and semi-deleted roads in the vehicle sims. What does *that* say about SL and its people -- and not just Lindens, but all of us?

Wow, big words dis mornin.

Mari

Out of the mouths of babes and all that. Words well spoken, Mari, and as the forum's resident SL inner child, it's quite appropriate. :)

That's a very good way to put it, and now I know why we still haven't seen the promised blog entry...

...the Lindens are still waiting for their shipment of Lie-agra to come in to firm up their flaccid reasoning.
