In fairness, this is hardly unique to LL! "feature Creep" is both much more fun to do and much easier to sell to management than making the old crud work properly!

Twas so in the days of MULTIVAC and still is ...

I can even spot bugs in some of MY code that (after 20 years!) is still wallowing around in cyberspace. With bugs I wanted to fix before I left the company (honest ma!)

eep! :-)

Arent those er... features?

The really scary thing is that they probably HAVE become "features" by now. :-(

The great virtue of the "y2K bug" was that all the really bad ancient code was at least inspected if not totally replaced.

Sadly that did not happen with Engineering/Scientific software. :-(

Exactly!

While I like Windows Server, there are some things it just couldnt handle. Petabytes of data for SL comes to mind.

Usually it seems folks who suggest Windows or some other OS for SL have very little understanding at just how much data is being transferred as well as what goes on behind the scenes.

Er.. SL doesn't run on a single server. I don't think any single machine in the grid has to deal with anywhere near that amount of data.

I don't know how LL pokes at the OS code itself but with the _thousands_ of servers that make up the grid, I'd bet that a big part of their choice to use Debian was cost..

Chosen is right. The problem is that LL generates bugs faster than they fix them. :p (sorry couldn't resist.)

Actually, in the software industry, this is technically referred to as "developing and maintaining software". ;)

Yup. The last thing I read (someone pointed us to an article about SL yesterday) said that SL has 16,000 servers. That's a lot of MS licenses. ;) Twosteppin's right. Just put it all on Access.

You're kidding, right?

Besides, Linux Is Not UniX. (<-- beware, daft recursive acronym joke nicked from GNU...)
;) No really, if you don't have an idea what the differences between the two are, you shouldn't suggest using Windows instead.

One can make a windows server as solid as a unix box. It simply depends on the knowledge of the system admin and the s/w and h/w setup. No OS is fully secure nor compleatly flawed. Using a blanket comment as such only shows, IMO, ignorance on the topic.

ANY thread of this nature is going to, in the end, break down to the technical discussion with people expressing their preferances. I have been online for 20 yrs and I have yet to see such a loaded 'topic' not do such. Your 'begging' and 'asking' falls a deaf ears with this topic just like if it was a topic on politics, religion or the iraq war.

F00d for thought next time you wish to post such ;)

Yeah sure. As if. We do have some Windows servers running here at uni, but that's nothing compared to LL's 16,000 servers for the grid. Also, the difference between open and closed source. And money. And the fact that the OP seemed to have absolutely no idea what he was talking about...
*throws a plush penguin*
I'm even USING Windows here, sheesh. Can't even have a little blanket comment anymore nowadays.
(And yeah, I've been online for over 20 years, too...)

We should totally convert everything to Microsoft Access. That would rock.

This thread delivers on so many different levels! :p

I think that might be 16k sims, not servers. Still, that's a whole lot of hardware (and OS licenses).

UNIX = Linux OS system

now, i was wonderingm, they have so many issues, where i work in Real life our LAN servers are Dell xenion systems, should LL swtich to windows OS for the asset servers or fix the current systems?

I doubt if a windows farm could even handle SL. SQL Server would croak a hideous death. Have you tried myspace lately? hee hee hee. It's so annoying.

I'm sure if people go the 'computer science ala bill gates gave my college a free computer with windows so they're going to pretend windows is better' speech then the person doesn't know any better. Unfortunately, this covers a good majority of the latest drones of IT people. Sad, but true.

I doubt if windows could even handle running the SL server farm and as it continues to grow, moving it to the windows platform would be its death.

yeah, but only until the next windows update when all the *new* bugs, open ports, and security flaws are introduced.
