You're kidding, right?

Besides, Linux Is Not UniX. (<-- beware, daft recursive acronym joke nicked from GNU...)
;) No really, if you don't have an idea what the differences between the two are, you shouldn't suggest using Windows instead.

Actually, I think the database is MySQL running on Linux. Why?? Because it's free.

Windows costs money, hence, cutting into the profits...or rather, an additonal liability. Don't think SL is making a profit just yet...but, that's a discussion for financial wizards.

Windows has more problems with reliability than Linux, as limited as Linux it.

/me goes to The Sims Online and bashes Furry Gorean Padawan Ninja Mutant Transformers there.

enough companies and people with cash for some reason or another put a lot of value in traffic. so whatever second life is worth on the books, you'll see a few people lining up to offer 5 to 10 times that.

The problem isn't Linux or MySQL. It's Linden code which is riddled with bugs. Check Jira for the MASSIVE list of unresolved issues. The problem is that they spend all their time on new features for Age Verification and Windlight support, and virtually no time at all on existing problems.

...As most of you know, we use a ton of MySQL databases running on Debian machines to handle lots of centralized services....

That quote's a bit over a year old.. Stuff may have changed since then but I'm pretty sure it's still MySQL on Debian.

I know, but I think the furries always manage to slip below the radar. When was the last furry-bashing thread? I can't remember one ever.

Wanting to simulate dog penis is far more bash-worthy than wanting to simulate having a nubile slave girl. I mean, who doesn't want a nubile slave girl? It's perfectly natural. Dog penis, however, is not something to be played with (pfffft).

A compelling argument...

The problem is that they spend all their time on new features for Age Verification and Windlight support, and virtually no time at all on existing problems.

Not that there's any good excuse for the amount of bugs, but at least get your facts straight. To suggest that the development of Windlight or the incorporation of age verification somehow inhibits LL's ability to work on fixing bugs is simply ludicrous. There are lots of people over there with lots of different specialties, doing lots of different things. There's no such thing as "all their time". They can do more than one thing at once.

Understand that Windlight is one project being worked on by a distinct team, not by the whole company. I'd imagine the same is true for the age verification project. Don't forget, Windlight was a separate company, which LL acquired. It is only logical that the people working on Windlight now would be the same people who were working on it before LL even bought it. Why would you want those people to stop working on the product they know, and try to dive into finding fixes for bugs in parts of the system they have nothing to do with? That would make no sense whatsoever.

From what I hear, a significant portion of LL has been almost entirely devoted to bug squashing for some time now. In 2007, I think more bugs were probably fixed than during all three previous yours of SL's history combined. That's significant. They've got a very long way to go still, and unfortunately their priorities about in what order to attack each one will undoubtedly differ from yours or mine at any given time. But that doesn't mean they're not doing anything.

So don't go around making up stories about how they're sitting on their hands, looking at the pretty Windlight instead of fixing bugs. That's untrue and unfair. One has nothing to do with the other.

Chosen is right. The problem is that LL generates bugs faster than they fix them. :p (sorry couldn't resist.)

Suggesting the replacement of Unix/Linux servers with Microsoft is like convincing NASCAR drivers that they'd win more races if they drove a Kia ;)
