That is wonderful. I was actually waiting for this notion to emerge. That's what I thot earlier--and it is perfectly consistent with the "atomistic" approach of SL.
The one thing that won't be possible from scripted profiles is the #1 thing I want...

Search "My Notes" in profiles.

Don't forget that one.

I like the idea of showing last time logged on, and possibly like in the Instant Messengers, where you can have certain people knowing if you are "online" or "invisible", this could be done as well, say-anyone on your friend list, could know the last time you logged on.

The idea of knowing how much someone spent, for what, how many times they changed clothes etc..is an invasion of privacy to me. I don't want people knowing how much money I have or what I purchase, as in real life. They see what I have bought by the clothes I wear and visiting my home to see the house, furniture, pool..etc.

I think they should have an add a friend button on the profile, we can pay people money from a distance, but can't add them as a friend (shoot we can even pay them while they are offline!)

Being able to make a landmark from someone's picks, especially when its their business and you can't go at that time, but want it for say an hour later or whatever (and like me tend to forget quickly) this would be beneficial.

I'm sure there are a few more things I agreed with on here, but I can't remember...:)

last logged in has my vote for sure. It would make managing a group a lot easier. If your running a hired security group and one of the members hasnt logged in for a couple months you could just kick them and replace them. ;p

Isn't that what the date on the group member list is?

I think the music player would be a good idea, not sure how it would work tho considering you can only load 10 seconds of music at a time. I have a myspace link in my profile for that. It would be nice to be able to have it play in world.

Hi Torley :)

I would like to add these to my profile;

* Calender Tab

* Family Tab ~ With perhaps pre-set (but editable) sub-tabs labeled Mom, Dad, Sister,
Brother, Uncle etc. ~ People often put this info under the Picks tab but the Picks tab is
poorly organized and/or designed for this reason.

* Ability to maximize a written profile into a page so that we can read the profile without
scrolling.

- More free text spaces especially for business customers and stuff like that. Or even a business profile tab.

- "Out of town" message when away for longer periods of time so when people IM you they know that you are away even if they haven't bothered to read your profile.

- More picks

- Automatically renewing Classified Ads.

- Notes is useless... That space could be used for more useful things. I don't think I have ever used the notes tab once.

Just more space would be nice
04-02-2006 15:05
Seems I run out of space when I do a profile description. A few extra available lines would be nice. Same goes for the property descriptions in the About Land menu, never enough space.

my 6L$ worth - at current rates

1) Two levels of profile - avatatars on your friends list could see additional data - including last time/date online - similar to goups, where non members do not have access to all tabs.

2) Current status - show if avatar is currently away or busy

and while voice is actually O.T. I believe SL really needs this, but with limitations. It should be restricted to normal chat range - say 30m. The shout facility *would* be abused.
If this was a chargeable option, it would give those residents who didn't want it a reason not to have it. As well as the transexuals, there are also people with speach impediments, non-native English speakers, others who would be uncomfortable speaking in public. It must be implemented in such a way that there should be no pressure to participate. Group chat systems are available elsewhere, as is person to person, so neither of these aspects would need to considered.

I also agree that rating should at least be reviewed if not killed. I rate back? that is nonsense - it effectively means you are bribing someone to rate you. The rated back resident has done nothing to warrant a rating.
How about something like a visitors book, allowing others to post a one line comment in your profile. Not a perfect idea, I can see problems, for example negative or abusive comments, but we need something better.

Ratings System
04-02-2006 18:11
I think the ratings system should resemble somehting more like the Slashdot "karma points" system on their forums. Because the current system puts a price tag on reputation, the rich will always have a better reputation than the poor. That's a systemic inequity and its wrong.

A "REAL" Idea...
04-02-2006 19:53
I don't know where this should go, but I think it might work here for feature feedback. I have a real good idea, at least I think it is, I don't know how many will agree with me, but here it goes. Forget the new features right now, there is enough great content in Sl to play with, forget the ideas to bring new things into SL, alot of us probably don't care about those right now. Instead, try this....concentrate on fixing the LAG!!!! I can almost garuntee that if the lag was fixed or at least reduced, more people will be inclined to come here, right now I am letting people know that sure SL is great, alot of things to do, but the LAG will get ya. I for one am getting real tired of the lag. It seems that all you are interested in is bringing in new content that will ultimatly cause even more lag, lets do this, fix the lag first, then add new content that will work well with the program. How does this sound?

kinda personification
04-03-2006 12:21
This is the coolest program. It is very imaginative. I feel shy, awkard and out of sorts as a person within this program. In daily life I am just me and I want it to be that way. As a person in SecondLife I feel just too odd. I am exhausted from human imagination every day as me. I want to be an eagle, dolfin, rabbit or a sea turtle. Please consider a world with other creatures. I could soar the skies, swim the seas or crawl the land. Thanks for the program.

Why cant the profile IN SL be connected to the profile at FORUM.. one and same for both places...

PLus I dream of more than now aviable choises in the ”pic” sections

Plus to be able to join more GROUPS... as when you are into business all allowed groups are used for business and then you have to few left for funny things and close friends...

I'd like to second the profile stores idea from earlier, but focus on adding links to notecards in the profile. It would be great to have notecard libraries available in the profile - one for the general public, one for friends. Groups could have these also, so general info, meeting schedules, etc. could be transmitted in a way other than Voting or IMs. Then business owners could leave extra copies of product instructions, and I'm sure the general public would find this useful as well. Perhaps a new Notecards folder, which could be accessed via the profile?

I'd love to have a "Land for Sale" tab in the profile. I'd usually prefer to buy land from someone I know. It would also be neat to see someone's Events and Classifieds listings in their profile, consistently. Also, the "New....Delete...." buttons on the Classifieds tab shouldn't be visible on other's profiles.

All of the above ideas should be fully controllable by the user, so one can choose not to show that info if they'd prefer.

Profile tabs should also be dynamic, so if I have no Picks, say, or nothing in my 1st Life section, that tab vanishes - except on our own profiles, of course. The only tabs that would never vanish would be "2nd Life" and "My Notes", and any other statistics/embedded info type tabs that might be added.

This isn't directly profile-related, but could be accessed via the profile - I'd love to see custom away messages, so we could see more than just 'User not online...' Then we'll know if someone's away for a few days and forgotten to tell everyone they should have in-world, etc, or if they've vanished from the metaverse.

It would also be nice to choose where the tabs rest in the profile - top, bottom, left, or right. A resizable window would rock, as well.

Thanks for the thread, Torley! :)

I'd like something for privacy under Online. I want to be able to put myself "Offline or Unknown" even when I am online even to friends and groups. It gives me some private SL time without resorting to creating an alt account just to relax and rewind.

1) An in-profile blog.
2) Expanded picks
3) out of profiles, but you guys should use the amount of people that have a plot listed in their "picks" to decide popularity.
4) no music, please. Myspace called, it wants its annoyances back. :)
5) Feedback page, instead of ratings. Not anonymous.
6) Expanded text limits for 2ndlife/1st life descriptions.
7) HTML links.
8) Maybe even proto-html design elements.

That's all I have right now.

1) The ability to add a landmark to your inventory based on the profile "picks" you are viewing.
2) Date/Time last on line
3) Off world IM support. AIM, Y!, ICQ
4) Time/Date/Amount of last transaction with this avatar (compared to yours)
5) Break groups into 2 sets, one for personal groups, the second for business and land mgmt.
6) Stats page: height, weight, eye color, species, other attributes
7) Total land owned in sq m
8) Total land donated to groups
9) Total # of logins
10) Being able to sort your "pick list"

Will see if I can think of any other items. I had a few others in mind, but erased them when I realized the potential negative ramifications.

What I'd like to see in a much needed business tab
04-13-2006 06:30
I could see uses for a business tab that maybe list your business information such as...
1) Business name
2) What you sell
Clothing, Scripted Items, Skins etc
3) Business hours if you have any
I've seen many on profiles and believe this could be a nice edition to a tab such as this.
4) Business associates or who to contact with questions
i.e. Joe Nunya- clothing, Jill Whatchamaycallit- skins, etc.
This could save a lot of headaches and unneeded IMs, the customers would know exactly who to contact related to the business.
5) Store policy
This is something that is just needed, period! Posting them in your shop does not seem to work for many business owners, you still get the IM saying "I never seen any policy" (even if they are posted at the front door of thier store).
6) A link to your main store readily available
This I could see saving the IMs from the "wheres your store?". Even though we can list them in picks they can get lost so easily to a newer player and even old ones if a main store is moved. This link would be a way in which it would be fast and easy for any player to get to the business owners store.
7) A space to list extra notes that customers could click on and get expanded information
The information could be...
Special sales or offers
If you are going on vacation you could let customers know
Special instructions for an item i.e. to get updates...

I also like the idea of customers being able to leave messages other than IM, seeing that many log onto capped IMs and its not always the IMs from customers but vending machines and other bits that eat up IM space.

Also making the account history searchable or another means so business owners can verify purchases from them faster since there are so many secondhand sales anymore (yard sales, resale shops, etc).
Being able to search for a certain customers name could verify not only that they bought the product but allow the owner to know if that item is no longer covered under a return policy or warrenty. This could also be a fast way to verify who is to receive updates.

Well, I must say that I Tink Buttercup has a well thought out & very useful suggestion here! I would suggest adding a place to include a link to a website that is used in conjunction with & support of your SL business activities.

Might I also suggest on the interests tab, to include a set of subtabs in the lower section where residents may explain or give a little detail regarding their selections. Like if you wish to hire, what type of employment & candidates are they seeking or if one wishes to be hired, what types of positions & rates are they looking for. This could prove to be very helpful in finding the right candidate or opportunity that perhaps one may be seeking.

Perhaps it may be helpful to include gender on the first page. Yes I do realize that in many cases this is quite obvious, but I have heard from a number of residents lately who remarked that they were speaking to another resident, but had no idea what gender they were. This could lead to both awkward & embarrassing situations that could be easily avoided. Does anyone agree?

Ratings needs to go!!!
04-15-2006 23:02
Im sorry, but ratings in the profile just seem useless, I got raed a few times here and there when I started and also rated a few people myself, but for the past several months I dont even hear or see anything of being rated. Just my opinion though!! ;o)

Voice A Problem
04-17-2006 18:36
From: Torley Linden

Voice chat--like that tangent! That one's still divisive and unclear because of people who don't want to use it (e.g. are a female av in SL and male offline) and at the same time, it has many uses. I'm sure Pathfinder has a lot to weigh in on that, he's been doing research. But that goes beyond profiles, altho it could conceivably be connected, like including your Skype ID or a SL "call me" button and soforth.

[/QUOTE

I simply do not like the voice option but not for the reason above. The main problem is that it puts residents in two classes -- those who can support voice with their hardware and those who cannot. (I have this very advanced system but simply cannot make voice work in anything!)

I can see where some residents will refuse to talk, or give short shrift, to those who cannot or will not. I know voice is a "sexy" thing to have, but I really believe it will bring on unwanted complications and be divisive.

Profile blogs? Yecch!
04-17-2006 22:33
I think in-profile blogging is pointless, especially considering the upcoming in-world web browsing. If clickable links in profiles are implemented then you can just put in a "Click here to see my blog" link and off you go! Or, include that in off-world references, like IM names. Besides, I already have a blog elsewhere.

That said, being able to apply some styling to your profile text is a great idea.

I do like the calendar idea especially if you can set alarms for yourself, and I really like searchable notes. I also really, really like the business tab idea, even though I don't have an in-world business (yet!).

Here Here! Additionally I would like to be able to prioritize picks so that my favorite place (ie home, store or hangout) shows up on top.
