Hamlet, I was thinking -- it would be so cool to read another 'walk across SL' article when the new continents are finally all auctioned off. That's a major chunk of land -- with cool land features that didn't exist before (ooh that volcano is just, man, I want that volcano . . .) and with new landscaping rules -- it's really forcing folks to build with the land -- and I think there's some parallels to be drawn with the whole frank lloyd wright school of architecture -- at least the part about working with an environment rather than altering it to meet our own needs, etc. etc. I'll walk with you, if you need company . hehe. I spent the whole first week the new sims came online down there in them. I am still there all the time actually. I feel like I got a pretty good knowledge of the landscape down there, especially the shorelines. It is pretty interesting to see the virgin land being settled and developed now. Some are doing a great job of working with the landscape. Good idea Zana.

That's a great idea, Zana! I've actually been thinking of doing that very thing. The first walk was on July 20, 2003, and my original plan was to do the next one on July 20, 2004. But at the rate the Lindens are putting up new land, the place might take 12 hours to walk across, by then! So yeah, maybe we'll do it sometime in March...

That would be a great piece of journalism to read. Pictures, please! Volcano? Where is there a volcano?

Well, Neil Protagonist has one near his and Nephilaine's expansive projects, up North. It's really great. Though I found myself wishing it was in a damaged-enabled sim, so people could, say, perform human sacrifices by tossing virgin avatars into the crater.

I believe Zana is referring to the huge new shield volcano that spans across four sims down in the southern continent. It's gently smoking right now, but someone will get the opportunity to make it come alive (or build a ski resort, you never know here). It's only a short hop from Cordova so you should check it out! It's SL's first mountain that approaches the size and feel of a real one.

I found it. Wow, that's neat. Reminds me of Kilauea in Hawaii. Can almost smell that sulphur. I wonder if people will be able to delete the vents, or will they be forced to work around them (I hope the latter). I'm glad to hear about the recent changes that limit terraforming. Already I've seen way too much overdevelopment ...big boxy things planted on wonderful outcroppings, beautiful bays choked by docks, etc. To each his own, I guess. I've also seen really wonderful architecture that works with the land. As a newbie, I'm trying to see as much as possible and learn from others.

Yep, there's that one, too! Don't worry, we'll be sure to visit both on the coming jaunt.
Which, looking at my calendar, I'm planning for next Tuesday, March 2nd, starting sometime in the evening. Lemme check with the Lindens to see if there's any scheduled downtimes on that day, before I make the official announcement...

I really hope this happens. Will be fun to be with a group walking across the land, taking it in slowly. I've been doing this on my own lately, and it's great fun. Woo!

Excellent! Now I'm thinking of next week Thursday, starting around Noon or so. It took 2 hours, 19 minutes last time, and now that there's twice as much land, and we'll have to double back in places, I'm expecting it to take at least 6 hours. Probably more, because I'll be posting "live" every hour on the hour, for the first three hours of the trip. I'll make the official announcement on NWN, but if you're planning to come, think of all the wacky AVs, attachments, vehicles (I'll be walking on foot all the way, but no one else has to), and so on. We want a great big convoy of folks. Well, no more than twenty or thirty, so we don't crash sims, as we enter 'em.

Hopefully it will extend late enough I can get my SLive show in on some of it, that would be great. (And where's an article on SLive huh? ;)

Be sure to wear proper footwear. And don't forget the proper breathing gear for those of you who need to breathe in SL. (yay for those carcinogens!) Decided the volcano is one of my top three favorite places in the southern sims so far.

It's sent out to all residents via e-mail, or it's supposed to be. If you didn't get it and want it, e-mail me at hamlet@secondlife.com, and I'll forward the request to the Lindens who can provide. Meanwhile, the official announcement is here: http://secondlife.blogs.com/nwn/2004/02/next_thursday_h.html

The offer is appreciated and surely tempting, but there can be no stopping until we are at the center of each simulator. The party would, however, be forever grateful if, for example, a Club Vogue welcome party was waiting for us there with drinks and perhaps entertainment...
