STOP IT! STOP IT! STOP! STOP! STOP! (stop!)

FREEZE!!!! STEP AWAY FROM THE GREEN BOX AND PUT YOUR LITTLE AVI HANDS UP IN THE AIR!

DON'T tell me how gooood it looks....

DON'T complain to me about being stuck with a certain land texture

LEARN to take advantage of your surroundings and create something that FITS THE SIM
We'll all compliment your building skills once you learn to build within the scope of the surroundings : until then, leave your square flat green lawn in your pockets and buy the land you REALLY want.

I agree, I always think it is funny to see people covering over the land they bought.
Buy the type you like, if none is available - wait for something.

I bought my land cause I fell in love with the look of the land itself - then built my things to blend in.

Amen, brother. And if you really must -- be creative. Blow an extra prim on a 'wall made out of a nice stone texture!

And don't buy a cliffside overlooking the sea if you're going to place a prefab cabin from the Hoffman's on a floating deck 20 meters over the water!

Just because you can ignore the natural laws of meatspace doesn't mean you necessarily should or that it looks good.

Raise your voice to testify.

A square of astroturf floating on water with no land in sight looks odd.

Can anyone who has grassed over their waterfront to the very edge of their portion of the water way, achieving a floating astroturf effect as described above, please explain why you bought waterfront property which is typically more expensive than a land locked parcel?

Can I get a witness?

Witness here!

I have to agree, it looks like crap.

I am loathe to tell people what to build or not to build, and I won't directly do so, however, I do think that these artificial lawns are unsightly.

Recently, I got my best friend and his wife interested in SL. They didn't want to pay tier, but had fallen in love with this small isle in one of the Hawaiian sims.

I put it under my tier and rented it to them. They were tickled pink. Well, wouldn't you know it, not a day later, a "mafia" buys a quarter of the sim and starts putting out fake lawn right on top of the water next to them, amid other eyesores, like a massive mansion that is just sitting on one of these astroturf pads, on the water.

Oh well...

I know you're not talking about mine. It's SynLawn and it looks outstanding, and I would hardly call a 2500 m2 house a "mansion". ;)

Well, some people are environmentally conscious, and some aren't.

Frank Lloyd Wright was.

And I am, a little bit. When they extended Azure Islands and suddenly there was a road right up next to my fence (which had been on the edge of the world), I moved the fence back and moved my crane over in the piece of land next to the road. Thus, that portion of my land helps the overall look, and is actually outside my fence.

That's cause I'm a GOOD girl. Just think - if everybody did something like that, like the crane which added to the ambiance of the area, how nice things would be! Thankfully, we have plenty of people who do just that.

Anyway, I find most things in this world disappear sooner or later, so just waiting out whatever you don't like is usually enough.

That describes the one across from me in the Atoll Continent to a tee. Estate sized house, manicured lawn,...IT'S FLOATING, PEOPLE!

I looked at your forum avatar and you seem to have skin that is not only thick but green and scaley, too. Hey...wait a minute here! Is that real skin or is it SynLawn?!?!?

I totally agree, but I am perfectly happy with it if they at least texture the side of the grass with concrete or wood so it doesn't look like a big 3d lawn :P

Look. I don't appreciate the command to stop doing what I had a perfectly good right to do when I did it.

The reason I made lawn prims is simple: I was making a secret basement underneath it!

Until it is possible to actually build "underground" tunnels, etc. the ground must remain the lowest point in parcels, and that's not always the best situation.

Anyway, I got tired of low heights and crouching cameras, so I just made a regular basement with black walls instead of green textured ones.

god can you all find something important to complain about?

I dont agree or disagree with prim lawns.

but simply dont look at it, build a wall so you dont have to look at it, put some trees up, offer to buy your neighbors land, or move.
How would you feel if your neighbor tried to tell you what the hell to do your own land?

There are two kinds of critics in this world.
Constructive and Destructive.

Maybe just maybe the person doesnt have building skills like you, offer a suggestion or help. People are too qick to jump on others rather than offer a kind suggestion.

(please note: I don't know the people involved, this post was just disturbing drama)

this post was just disturbing drama

This is an extremely important matter to me and I was hurt by your dismissing my feelings, and therefore me. I know I deserve it after treating Gabe's devotion to SynLawn so cavalierly. :( But I persevered to get through the trauma to my psyche by following the advice your wise words contained. I realized that I suck and an attitude adjustment was needed. :(

Thank you for your constructive tips. :) I checked my land and found that I had 300 (!) prims to work with and got busy. The floating trees look very comely next to the cheeky sod. :D I used the remainder to construct the great wall. At first I was dismayed by the sight of a wall of plywood even though it did do a good job of blocking my view of the waterfront :) just as you said it would. I think I became blue because it reminded me that the Giant Cube was no more. :( I decided to retexture it and went walkabout looking for my muse. I came across a lovely woman named Deanne Greasemonque :p who was selling wonderful prints out of the trunk of her car which agreed to sell to me for only $50 bucks apiece. :D

I now pay homage to some classic artists with my very own 100 meter high Shrine to the Velvet Painting. It is listed in the new and improved classifieds because I'm scared to post in the classified forum. Please come visit.

p.s. Gabe, I am truly sorry. I was wrong. You are not that big of a loser. Please, please forgive me. Last night I had another one of "those dreams". You were piloting a square of plush SynLawn through the troubled waters after me as I swam, the theme to Jaws played in the background, of course. As dramatic and terrifying as that was, I must admit, you looked mahvelous!

This practice often shows a general lack of respect for others and environment. I don't mean polution-and-rainforest environment, but rather just your immediate surroundings and neighborhood.

Work with what ya got. If you're in a snow plot because it was cheap, then suck it up and act like you're in a snow plot. If you're in a forest, understand the trees and what others around you have done. Take some time to try to think about what fits in. You don't need to be a super-talented builder or hire an expensive architect. But you can at least look at the surroundings and come up with some colors and styles that are appropriate.

Do you really want to be that jerk on the highway that cuts people off and owns the road? You get to choose what kind of person you are. You can either say "I pay LL $xx and I can damn well do whatever I want to!" or you can be decent and respectable.

After reading my post it seems like I'm saying "Just shut up and fit in, and look like everyone else." Far from it. Please be creative and show your individualism, but at the same time respect your surroundings and understand your place in them. The two are not exclusive.

Building a home or a store to fit a plot of land is 80% of the fun. Having to modify your ideas to make your house look like it was built onto a hill is a wonderful challenge that everyone should go through at least once in their SL building career.

Flat green grass is very ActiveWorlds esque, and is a cop-out, in my opinion.

Some people see the glass half empty
Some people see the glass half full

Put some nice bushes and tress up agisnt your wall, maybe even a cozy bench with a little trellis surounding it, plant some pretty roses. making it a garden spot. some nice tiki torches and stepping stones.

btw I didnt dismiss your feelings, nor was my reply directed to you personally. War among your neighbors is not the solution. I used to live on the mainland where my nieghbor had a hiedious house in the sky. not even 40 meters about the land. he could at least have put it 300 meters, but thats mainland for you, hell my neighbors probably got annoyed looking at my 3 story Mall Wall. I tried to make it barable with nice textures at least. If you want a sim that doesnt have those kind of things on it then get a private island or rent from a residential island with rules. If not make the best of what you got.

I don't mind being surrounded by an often-changing menu of malls and spicy clubs.

I figure they might bring my store some business!

I have my shop there, but I actually "live" in the zoned residential community of Azure Islands. So I really have the best of both worlds.

All of your points apply to your own post. A fine, self-referential tautology.

On another note, isn't SL just one big lawn? I mean, I'd prefer not to think about terraforming someone else's idea of Hawaii or Switzerland - I'd prefer to "build" my own.

Sheesh. I guess I should mention that you were indeed correct about my hardened, scaly-green skin. Secondly, I live on a quiet waterfront, in a cave (/53/d1/24591/5.html#post718765 see post 125). Lastly, I was making a point about the various visions held within SL and that they don't all see eye-to-eye.

Any confusion on this matter is surely my fault and having said that, I going to work on my plush SynLawn flying "carpet".

I prefer to not point fingers and speak in genral by my own experiences. Not everything is as bad as people make it out to be.
