What good is video?

Example1: A video split into two cells of 240x160 with animated character busts. INSTANT Harry Potter moving photographs/paintings.. Feel free to steal this idea.

Example2: QText used to keep a low prim scrolling banner infosation. With the proper code you could generate a file on the fly from SL. The text file could be under 1 kb and is rendered in quicktime by the user's computer. Feel free to steal this idea.

Example3: PORN. You dont like this? Too bad it's gonna happen.

Example4: Your own personal video projects. Are you a film/digital arts student looking for an audience? SL will come watch your videos! Make up your own ideas for this one!

I find it interesting for people to assume that people engaging in AV sex all have to be big losers who can't get a date and/or laid, likely all men, ugly, etc. While I personally don't engage in such around here on SL, I have had experience being around people prone to engaging in such. Some of them I know even RL and can vouch that they have no issues getting laid and some are actually female.

Really the conclusion I've reached is that it's more about an ego-boost/control issue for some than it is a pure sexual release. It's more about feeling 'desired' and 'lusted after', the sort of thing that perfectly normal looking people, even some in relationships simply do not feel otherwise. It's a bit shallow, but I assure you that it's a mistake and a bit of condescending one to be making just to assume that anyone engaging in such is simply a 'pathetic loser' who can't get any.

If it was all about just getting their rocks off, I wouldn't be seeing a people pulling such power trips like 'We've done it, let's be partners -- now that we're partners, when I'm on I demand sex pronto' and variations thereof. The relationships are cheap, shallow and disposable, quickly drifting from the next 'score' to the other. It's more about the chase than it is swapping virtual fluids. This isn't some exclusive phenomenon to just SL, mind you. I've seen it on other communities as well.

Also: Some people are just bored.

I'm not even really trying to justify AV sex (I honestly don't care) so much as I'm bored and thought I'd share another point of view rather than just post stupid one-liners, as per usual from me.

Lol. Even handsome men in RL, and good looking people watch porn. Even those who are getting it in RL. Lol. SL offers Virtual Interactive Sex, which can be more fun than just watching porn for some people. I really dont think that there is a connection with liking the sex aspect of SL and not being able to get any in RL. Thats like saying that those who watch porn cant get any, which isnt true at all, a lot of people watch porn lol.

I think it's "looser".

They should just rename it "The Intersex".

No one really mentioned music videos yet. I think it will be cool for the club goers to see big screen videos of the music they are listening to. It ought to add a new element to that environment. If I stream video on my land it will probably be music video or funny stuff to laugh at.

But, I admit when I first heard that video was coming to SL I immediately thought of how the SL porno industry will embrace it. But, once I got in preview and saw the variety of streams people had set up, the possibilities started to seem endless. There will be porno, but you wont have to see it.

With an improved physics engine and a new rendering system, when they arrive, Av sex will probably take a leap upward in popularity.

Of course the new streaming video will bring in tons of streaming porno movies. There will probably be some good times to be had doing a Mystery Science Theatre audience commentary sort of thing.

I wonder if I'm the only starving artist who thought about video instalations?

What do you mean exactly? I talked to a guy who had the idea about having ambient video art playing. Or, having waterfalls, aquariums, and the like, to provide a different feel to a location. I am all for abstract video presentations, deployed in a unique way. You mean things like this or am I completely off target?

First and foremost ... .does strip triva count as "non-sexual behavior" even IF you are winning and only the guys are getting nude?

Second of all.. even those who love the more "romantic" aspects of SL are not keen to fly from club to club seeing 7 foot tall pornos.

Being romantic in SL is fun because there is a second (or third or .. *ahem) person involved. Porno is passive.

MOST things in SL are fun because there are other people involved.

Anyone on SL has a computer with broad band internet. So why would you want to see porn streamed THOUGH a game??? SL does not do much for videos one would want to watch in private if at all.

Now.... other non sexual uses.

Teaching.

Video opens up the chance to teach somethings that would have taken too many still images before.

I've tested ASL videos and they play fine.


Charlotte, if you are so worried do this. Look for the first place that tries to stream a commercial movie and report their ass. I don't know, aside from making it themselves *shudder they can't take any porn movie and stream it with permission.

Anything they can get will have a little url on it.. people will click and go OUT of SL just as you want them to.

You can stream pictures in? To me that sounds like a much bigger use of the tech, the ability to show huge photo libaries, and give presentations and such

There are a couple vids created around Uru, it would be nice to have those available for viewing. Continue the campaign I've taken up after hearing too many people here not know about Until Uru.

We also had a live feed from Until Uru the other week (though it was RealPlayer) for a St Pats parade. Having access to that in SL would have been totally insane, a true link between the two systems...

But we'd also have access to better educational formats, like the QT Text Jeff mentions, or an enhanced version of the Ivory Tower going over the UI in a video.

The heck /w pr0n. The classes may finally take back the event spaces dominated by Tringo. (OK, reaching a bit there, but one can dream ).

Personally, I think Charlotte's on to something here. LL is deliberately turning SL into a virtual porn emporium.

I think LL's recent decision to bring SpeedTreeRT to SL in the fall proves it.

Most people seem to think that SpeedTreeRT is about new landscaping opportunities, but I think it's about rendering all kinds of lumber in all kinds of circumstances, quickly and without straining server resources.

Sex sells. It's always been the case.

The more sex that can be found in SL, the more horny teenagers will hear about it, and sign up with mum and dad's credit card. Sadly, the rest of us will soon be swamped under a sea of "OMG SEXX0R BALLZ LOLOMGROFL!!!111".

In a PG sim? Doubtful. Also, remember that there is a teen grid coming.
