well if you dont get it back than the stuff that you love so much as hair and shoes and great custom builds probably will go up a little in cost since it will cost more of their time to make... so it hurts us all if you like to shop.

Hahaha, oh really?

So I'm clear: The grid faces mass economic inflation because one person is having a hard time adapting to changes in the build tools?

/me chortles heartily.

Undo has never, ever worked even once for me! "Why is it there?", I have often wondered.

What favours did you perform for whom to get this functionality activated?

Make sure that the Chat input window is closed, then Undo by hitting Ctrl-Z, and it should work pretty much every time. Should being the important word there. :)

There is an option to make the chat window close with every enter.

There is an option to make the chat window close with every enter, and so this is a good option to have in effect when building, in order to make sure that the building undo mode will be in effect. An Undo Text/Building indicator might be nice also.

Before reading the rest of the thread, I had to reply... Are you insane!? No, this "we" does not want it back.

Okay, now I've read the pros/cons, and I understand where people are coming from. But, free move hasn't been completely removed, it actually IS an option now... an interactive option. You can free move an object using the lttle corner-pairs that are indicated on a selected prim. I love this, because now when I want to free move something, it's constrained to just two planes. So, if I'm modding hair or shoes, I can use the X/Z free move arrows to position without worrying about the object shooting off along the Y-axis.

So, the option is still there.. only it's activated differently so that objects aren't freely moved unless the builder actually intends to free move the object.

why does it only matter if it doesnt work for you? why cant you just have it checkable and un checkable what is the problem with that, wait lets see there isnt one

Well, I don't think you were actually looking for an answer to your question, but I'll tell you what is wrong with that. More options for all of the many different possibilities means more code, and it also bloats the preferences panel. It tends to be a good idea to have as few options as possible, especially in a big application like Second Life, because otherwise users can get confused and/or shoot themselves in the foot by playing with options.

Anyway, before you complain any futher, why not give 1.6 a chance? Just try using the new plane-restricted drag-handles. Personally, I think they're just as useful if not more.

No... no, we don't. I'm quite happy with the easier drag-select. I can't count the times I've dragged a build (or part of one) all over the place trying to select it all. In the future, you might want to poll and see if there's some kind of consensus before declaring the mob's will.

In any event, I fail to see what's so different now. In 1.5, you grabbed an object and dragged. In 1.6, you grab an object's X/Y handles and drag. Losing CTRL for the third axis is a point, but that's what the other handles are for. You didn't lose free drag, you gained it in two additional directions. Then again, I always build by the numbers, so maybe there's something I'm just not seeing.

I am amazed why anyone would want free drag back, it sucked, hard. Don't feel too bad if you liked it because we still have the most useless, agrivating and moronic feature in SL building tools called "Free Rotate". You know, you are trying to line up a prim using rotate and for some reason you miss the tiny rotation bars and you click on the large "idiot catcher" surface by mistake and you now have a prim off on all three axis. If you find yourself "pining for the fjords" just rotate a prim and get all that orgasmic random aggrivation you can handle.

Can't you go into mouse look and pretty much do the free drag thing? I seem to remember doing this.

I don't miss free drag anymore. The free rotate still helps me a lot. If free rotate goes away, it would be nice if I could constrain rotation to axis from the POV of the camera.

I agree with those who want a toggle switch. Typically, drag is irritating but sometimes it comes in handy. Especially during big builds.

I haven't checked this in 1.6 yet, but I think you already can, at least you could under 1.5. In addition to the three colored axial circles, there is a fourth one, colored grey/white, that works just like you described.

Look at the object you're editing at an oblique angle; go into rotation mode, and move the pointer right to the edge of the rotation sphere: the edge should light up white. By dragging on that white circle, you should be able to rotate around the camera angle.

Dang, wish I was at home so that I could verify this.

The planar drag tranglular handles are acceptable if pressing the CONTROL key while dragging one would swap axes like the free drag used to and physical object dragging still does. Also, the three triangles need be be more visible from different camera anges. As it is, you have to do a whole lot more alt-camera-dragging to use them. Free drag worked from ANY angle. (Though camera angles close the the plane of movement used to cause extreme movement, something that could EASILY have been fixed.)

If these changes were an attempt to make the edit tools non-modal with regard to snap-to-grid, then the attempt failed. With the grid on, the planar drag is always snapping to the grid. The only way to turn it off is to unclick the checkbox.

If ALT could be pressed after the drag has begun to toggle the current snap-to-grid state, then non-modality will have been achived. BUT, if you are going to do that, why not do it for the linear drag, rotation, and resize tools as well. But that will make the whole ruler thing pointless and ugly, and I know how developers will CLING LIKE DROWNING KITTENS to new interface ideas... Even when they don't work as well as they hoped and other, better options are available.

* Grid lines. Did anyone ever use those? We need an option to hid the lines b/c they only obscure the object that you're trying to move.
They help me visualize the Z-plane of the object.

I like to drag when making my birds. I'd like to be able to do this again. Right now, being forced to drag one axis at a time, I just can't do that, it takes 50 times longer to line stuff up....

Right when I was finally getting good at this stuff.... now I'm unable to build even a foot in less than 6 hours.... I surrender.

I'll just wait till it's back up, or my subscription ends in June... whatever comes first. :(
