i got lost in the previous thread so i'm starting a little pole. it's a straighforward question. do you want free dragging added or not?

if so, do you want it to be optional?

if so, do you want the option to be the default?

okay maybe it's not a straightforward question. i tried to cover all the bases.

I said it should be returned as the non default option.

This doesn't mean I don't want the feature, I really really do. But for newer players, default-off is probably the safer of the two.

Finally an option for those of us not apathetic enough to vote, but too apathetic to care :D

I never used the free-dragging when it was in, I always used the arrow thingies and the number boxes...

The ones that confuse me are the ones that checked "Do not bring it back in any form at all".

Does letting other people use an interface that is comfortable to them bother them that much?

As a non-default option... this looks good enough to me. Sometimes it can be useful... and at other moments, it just contributes to mistakes. So yeah, better not expose too many new and pure souls to it from the start :D

I like free dragging, but it has gotten me into trouble in the past. Thus, I also like having the "combo arrows" as a "guide" but I would also like to have free dragging for making minute adjustments on the fly.

I voted this because the new build tools give us all the options of free-dragging, plus drag-selecting, and help prevent accidental free-dragging, and finally they allow two more planes of movement that free-dragging didn't. Adding an option would require them to put the free-dragging code back in, quite possibly introducing more bugs, adding more bloat to the system, and confusing users who want free-dragging but don't understand that this means they can't drag-select anymore. Given all this, I think people just need to get used to plane-constrained free dragging.

I'm not voting since my prefered solution, to use the control key while draging the triangle handles to swap axes like free dragging did, isn't an option.

Though I DO wish the handles were more visible from different angles. That's by biggest beef with them right now, besides the control-axis-swap.

I miss the free dragging, as I used it when my objects weren't perfectly lined up with the arrows. Bring it back, somehow :-)

actually, there is still a free drag option. you have to press the move button and unselect "use grid." the grid option stays unselected even after closing the edit window. but you do have to press MOVE every time you want to drag. it would still be nice to have a checkbox turn activate the free drag all the time.

free-dragging has it's uses, but it's mostly a nuisance. if it comes back, it should be non-defaulted and possibly hot-keyed.

hey... can we ever get user-definable hotkeys?

My assupmtion of "free dragging" is that, prior to 1.6, when you were building, you had the option to grab the prim itself, and could move it freely along the x/y plane without having to use the arrows or the corners. Granted, as it's been pointed out above, it can still be approximated, but it's rather tricky to do, and the poll is about whether that should be brought back into game or not.

Personally, I believe that you can never have enough tools or options available when building, so everything *should* be an option, and let people choose how *they* like to build.
