why do you bother reading and posting if you are so unhappy with the forums?

The point is we want to post nonsense too. If its okay for them then its okay for us.

I am the security Lindela referred to in her originating thread. It is unfortunate that we are not allowed to name names here. This lowlife, owner of the "balls-o-doom" literally went from club to club yesterday. I was not able to tell which he started with, but I know for certain, with my own eyes, he was at 3 more clubs after ours. These new devices look like invisible pencils, or dowls. He released 5 of them in each of the clubs. This is enough to crash anybody that does not have a very state of the art computer. Each one contains 3 scripts and 2 textures. I can name names, with regard to authors and owners of the scripts and devices. By turning off all outside scripts on the land, then using a script finding device, I was able to ascertain all necessary information on these devices. I have and sent in screen shots showing this information to LL.
The unmentioned lowlife has a new type of script, or device. I watched him walk right past our state-of-the-art bouncer. I checked afterwards to make sure his name was added. It was. I then verified it was working by adding a cooperative assistant. It worked. The only thing remaining, is that he has a device which allowes him to be ignored by the bouncer. By turning on "highlight transparent" I was able to see he was not wearing a shield. Yet the pusher bullets from my shiny new gun were completely ineffective, at point blank range. I watched helplessly as he dropped his five "spark bombs", and flew off to the next club. I followed him from club to club, until even my comp was overcome.

This person is using scripts in most ingenius fashion. And he is getting considerable help from a known scripter. If the club owners, employees, and even the regular folk who just want to dance and party, want to continue to be able to play, a consortium of sorts will be a necessity. We are not going to defeat terrorism in SL by ignoring it. He isnt going to get bored and go away. He has been doing this for over a month, and hasnt been banned. Apparently he isnt going to be. We residents will have to find our own solutions! We are not restricted any more than he is. Apparently, LL is amused by his antics. So let them be similarly amused by ours.
I therefore call upon any and all advanced scripters! Give us the weapons to combat this illusive menace! We will pay in hard $L for the ability to stay in business and repel the lowlifes!

For what concerns myself i will just set my radar to detect his name, and if i see him coming near to a club i am dancing of having fun in i'll let him taste some of his own medicine.
I guess it's almost time for club owners to hire bouncers, and heavily armed ones ^_^

The techie-talk is WAAAAY over my head, but I know from personal experience (yes, I'm also a dancer ) that Erikk's a devoted professional. And I still had no idea 'till I read that message that he was THIS capable!

The fact that he's still stumped by it all worries me. I'm still new, so maybe I'm getting more concerned than I should ... but is SL becoming a battleground for non-consensual "l33t" hacker warfare?

That is true of a few Hiro. However, these particular griefers (note plural) have been at it for quite a few weeks. There will be short periods of a couple or few days when the main henchman will not show up, then a miraculous return ensues, with widespread mayhem and carnage. The Lindens are not at all reliable or straightforward in their judgement of who should be banned, and for how long. One would think that a single incident, which included the abuse of many dozens of LL customers, over several landmasses/areas/locals would be enough to get a nice long ban. This hasnt proven to be their judgement, as he/they return regularly. One particular bomber, who was stupid enough to speak to a present Linden at the club, just before dropping his c4 bombs, has not been seen since. And his name no longer shows on the list of av's online or off. Others, however, who have done much worse, continue unabated.

If I use tactics similar to the terrorist, for the dedicated purpose of keeping my club patrons safe, I would likely be banned for at least 2 weeks. Yet his ban has not exceeded a few days.

It is therefore in the hands of scripters to give us the tools we need to combat this menace. Many club owners I have spoken to while chasing these immature idiots would be willing to go to some lengths, spending considerable L$ to ensure some security.

It is my belief at this time, that there is more happening here than what is apparent. The scripting is too good for but a very few. I'm leaning toward a belief that think-tank of sorts is working out these new scripts. It may be as simple as college kids working together. I do not believe their claims of righteous indignation for a minute. This is griefing for the fun of it, pure and simple.

We need help to keep the freedom in SL. After all, how much fun for most of us would be a terrorist state?

I am gratified at the response to this thread. Good to see I am not entirely alone in my concerns.
Perhaps a get together of sorts IG would bring out ideas for increasing security.

Erikk...if what you say about think tank is in fact real....makes one wonder about the outside educational facilities given access to SL ? Might their agenda be non-conducive to the desires of the residents?

I am a newly minted associate prof at a university and any actions of that sort in an official capacity would quickly get you in a lot of hot water with your dean and the department chair. With a couple of exceptions down south of Mason-Dixon, I get the feeling that any university worth its salt would either be behind the idea of SL or at worst not care much either way.

I really wonder... What would happen if Mr Griefer shows up at your club and you turn off all external scripts on your land in his face.... all his weapons and protections are scripts, so theorically you would render him totally inoffensive and defenceless with a single click. Even more so, as the owner you can plant gun turrets that not being external would continue to work. This way the griefer would turn from attacker into target practice.
Sure, your customers would have to stop dancing for a bit, but i guess you can offer a different kind of entertainment, seeing a griefer powerless and humiliated is mighty fun.

heh, and turn off flying so he has to feel more pathetic walking out. too bad you can't block TP's as well.

The problem with this is that the landowner is never online 24hrs a day. Often only a few, as most of us work for a living. I work for myself, and am thus on far more than most. Nice try tho. The club should be open more than the owner need be available. Several clubs are on rented property also, rendering this even more useless.

The key words here being "in an official capacity". Most college ppl have access to a comp outside of class.
