From: Loki Pico That is exactly what I was worried about with running HL2 through STEAM. If I buy the CD retail, cant I play it with the disk without loading it into STEAM? I fully expect to load it later, but is it a "must do" in order to just play the single player? The load times are long no matter what. I played only after I had the whole game downloaded to the HD. So basically, it's the same, besides that you need to have the DVD in your drive if you bought the retail. This is basically for copy protection but it's kind of ridiculous to have 2 forms of protection: one with the DVD in the drive, and the other by requiring to register the game through steam.

Well, I got 10 minutes into the game. It's very pretty... impressive even! But then it decided that I'd probably rather be looking at my desktop, and noisily returned me there, considerately saving me the trouble of making the decision for myself. Let the troubleshooting begin, w00t.

Ryen,
It wasn't the fact that the server locked up which annoyed me. It was the fact that it told me that it would inform me when it had made a connection and finished the registration process, implying that it would keep trying. In point of fact it was just sitting there on my computer for hours, not doing anything at all.

I LOVED the (under the) bridge segment... talk about freaked me out! Really gave me a sense of fear of falling, esepcially with the wind whipping around my ears like that!
